Introduction
Two difficulties faced by English teachers and students are:1) students know many words but within a group there is no common vocabulary understood and used by all the students, and 2)students have difficulty knowing which words should be added to their individual vocabularies because there are thousands of wordsavailable to them.
To assist both students and teachers, this “Basic English Vocabulary List” nas been developed. The goal is to ensure that all studentscan correctly use these individually selected 1,145 words in reading, writing and speaking English. All of the words have been listedalphabetically within categories. This is considered to be a general list and students will add specific vocabulary according to theirfields of study.
Verbs (Vb.): Special emphasis will be given to 6 verb tenses. Those tenses for each verb have been printed in the list. They are:present continuous; simple present; past; future; present perfect and simultaneous events in the past. For example: 1) I am adding, 2) I add, 3) I added, 4) I will add, 5) I have added, 6) While I was adding...he helped. Irregular verbs inthe different tenses have been recorded in bold type . Adjectives (Adj): Antonyms have been included with each adjective in the list. For example: 1) tall-short Other Categories are:
Pronouns (Prn): Vehicles (Vhl):Determiners (Dtm): Weather (Wtr):Conjunctions (Cnj): Animals and Plants (A&P):Prepositions (Prp): Food (Fd):Auxiliary verbs (Aux): Parts of a house (Hse):Adverbs (Adv): People (Ppl):Ordinal numbers (Ord): Clothing (Clt):"WH" question words (Qst): Cardinal points (CP):
