Salutations Odyssey Academy members! My name is Mr. Yanni and I will be your science teacher for the 2011/2012 school year. The main focus of 7th grade science is the study of living things. As a member of my science class you will learn how the eye works, why you look the way you do, the cause of your armpit odor and what is inside a frog, just to mention a few of the things. Basic Course Outline- FOCUS ON LIFE SCIENCE

I. Cell Biology

A. All living things, _________________, are made of ______________.

i. Although you started out as a single cell, you now are made of approximately ___________________cells.

ii. The cells that are found in plants are a little different than animal cells

-____________________organelles in plant cells that make them green and allow them to produce their own food

-_ ____________________organelle in plant cells that cover the outside of the cell and give it a rigid, boxy shape, kind of like a plant skeleton.

i. _______________________-includes the stomach and small and large intestine

ii. _______________________-includes the heart, veins and arteries

iii. _______________________-we will cover this in family life later on this year

V. GeneticsA. All _________contain instructions which determine what that cell will do or what an organism will

look like i. These instructions are found in the control center of the cell called

the

ii. The instructions are found on structures called ________________ made of DNA

iii. You get half of the instructions from _________and the other half from

Expected BehaviorIn addition to the academy behavior policy I require that students follow common sense safety guidelines while in the science lab. Students will read and then sign these guidelines indicating that they understand and intend to follow them. Anyone jeopardizing the safety of oneself or others will not be tolerated and will result in behavior slip/automatic referral to vice principal and loss of laboratory privileges. Safety is no accident!

Absent WorkAgain, in addition to academy policy there are a couple of more things to be aware of in my class regarding absent work. Next to the exit door on the left hand side there is a file with five slots, one for each day of the week. Extra daily handouts will be placed in this file. When you return from an absence, look in the appropriate slot for those items you need and pick them up.There is another file which has 4 slots, one slot for each science period (A, B, C and D). This file is found on the counter on the right hand side of the exit door and is used to store graded work for students that were absent or for some other reason did not did not receive their graded work. On a weekly basis I will return your assignments with the point values you have earned. I will then record those grades in the grade book and post them on the internet. You will find a record of those scores on the internet at the school web site. This will allow you and your parents/guardians to know your grade at all times and what you are doing to it based on the quality of the work you produce. You control your grade, I don’t. It is a good idea to hold onto your graded work at least until you compare the scores with what is posted on the internet. If you were absent when papers were distributed, it would be your responsibility to retrieve your papers from this file.

Binders/TabsYour science binder is to be brought with you to class. This binder is an invaluable organizational tool which will allow you to be successful at doing your best. Within the binder it is necessary to have 5 tabs. The tabs should be labeled with the following headings:

NOTES PROJECTS/LABSVOCABULARY HOMEWORK GRADED WORK/WARMUP

Grading and EvaluationThe grade you earn is based on your total points divided by the total points possible times 100. This will result in your grade as a percentage. Each quarter will be a total of approximately 700-100 points possible. You might be asking yourself at this juncture how can I earn points? Well, I’m glad you asked. Points can be earned for the following tasks:

Chapter Tests(occasional open note)………………………………………… 100 points/testChapter Vocabulary Quiz (list of terms will be given at onset of chapter)…….25 points/quizHomework……………………………………………………………………..1-2 points/questionLab Write-up (scored as a group)…………………………………………...25-40 points/labProject/Report……………………………………………………………...50-150 project

End of Year Comprehensive Final There might be a final at the end of the year which will cover all material gone over throughout the year. It would be wise to, at the end of each unit, save all material and store it at home. I look forward to working with you and your parents in your discovery of why things are the way they are and thus becoming less ignorant of the world around you. Knowledge is power!
