    Objectives1.Students will listen to a presentation on the first amendment, censorship and the guidelines of school

    libraries in order to gain background knowledge before beginning this project.

    NYS Learning Standards AddressedStandard 1: Students will read, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

    Materials- Student ID badges- 100 Banned Books handout

    PrerequisitesStudents need to an understanding of the first amendment and have picked three books from the handout theymay be interested in reading

    Procedure1. Housekeeping (2 minutes)

    -Attendance2. Librarian Presentation (20 minutes)

    - Students will listen to our librarian present information on: censorship, librarianresponsibilities, challenged vs. banned and where the banned/challenged books are located in the

    library3. Book Choice and Initial Read (18 minutes)

    -Students will choose a banned or challenged book and check it out from the library-If the library does not have a copy of that book, student will use inter-library loan-If two students are interested in the same book, one student will need to chose their secondfavorite (Rock, paper, scissors may resolve the issue)

    -Once a book has been chosen, student may read quietly or begin researching the history of thebanning

    Objectives1. Students will present their PowerPoint slideshows to the class in order to communicate their critical

    analysis of the contain and banning of the book and make recommendations to their peers.

    NYS Learning Standards AddressedStandard 1: Students will read, listen, and speak for information and understanding.Standard 3: Students will read and listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

    Materials-Access to students P Drives

    -Projector and computer hook up

    PrerequisitesStudents need to bring their notes to class

    Procedure1.Housekeeping (3 minutes)

    -Attendance

    -Bring up students slideshows through their P Drive2. Anticipatory Set (2-3 minute)

    -Discuss the roles of both the presenter and the audience

    -Disruptive audience members will earn a detention-Chats will be no less than 5 minutes and no more than 10 minutes-If you are unprepared or refuse to present your slideshow, you will earn a detention at which

    time you will present your slideshow to members of detention

    -*Remember to create a list of interesting books youd like to read3.Student PowerPoint Chats (34 minutes)

    -Students may sit on the desk or stand next to the projector while chatting-Students will be given a two minute warning when their time is up

    4.Closure (1 minute)-Identify the students who will present the following day

    *At the end of the unit, collect the list of books students are interested in**Identify the favorite books of the grade, communicate this information to each class.

    a. Students learned about the books contents, literary terms and the history behind the banning ofthe books when they are able to follow the checklists provided in the instructions handout

    Banned or Challenged Book Project Checklist

    To help you accomplish this assignment, put a next to each slide you have completed.The slides should go in this order. This project is worth a total of 200 points.

    ____ 3. Literary Terms-Include information on how the author usedthree literary terms effectively. Thiswill show that you are able to identify the literary terms within a novel and how the author used them to impactthe reader

    PowerPoint Chat (50 points)You will not be writing a paper for this assignment. You will be creating an eye-catching, thought provoking, PowerPointslideshow to be shared with the class. Your slides should include relevantpictures and/or sounds, but do not include anyextras that will detract from the overall effectiveness of your chat. Be sure to get gold passes to the computer lab ifyou do not have this program at home. Not having this technology at home will not be an excuse for an incompleteassignment.

    PowerPoint Chat Checklist

    ___ I included 8 slides, using the space effectively

    ___ The information on the slides is readable and follows the conventions offormal writing.___ I used at least 5 relevantpictures or graphics that helped communicate the purpose of that slide.___ I spoke loudly, clearly and slowly so everyone can hear me.___ My chat did not go longer than 5 minutes*Class time will be used for silent reading, note taking and preparing for the PowerPoint Chat. Six-seven students each day will have

    the opportunity to use the computer lab- use this time wisely. The consequence of being off task or talking will result in 15 points offthis grade. If your behavior is not corrected, you are choosing detention. Be sure to get gold passes to the computer lab if you donot have PowerPoint at home. Not having this technology at home will not be an excuse for an incomplete assignment.
