SeaSon outlookSpring 2008 brings a lot of excitement to the

Redlands Baseball Program. Preseason ranked 11th by the NJCAA and a slew of returners, the 2008 group of Cougars have Millington, Tennessee, and a trip to the NJCAA World Series in their sights! One thing hasn’t changed and that’s Redlands winning ways and the desire to be the best, both on the field and in the classroom. After the second straight year of winning the Bi-State Conference and then winning the Region II tournament, a few additions have proven to be key to

pave the way to Millington.

Returnees expected to contribute are second baseman Brandon Hey, shortstop

Tom Dicker, third baseman Alex Aycoth, and outfielders Sean Iago, CJ Comstock, and Jake

Forsythe. Catcher and First Team All-American Jack Larner will provide stability for a talented pitching

staff. On the mound, sophomores Logan Davis and Ricky Cramer will anchor a very talented group of

arms. Newcomers to the team, Logan Rainey, Patric Tolentino, Jarod Palmer, Ryan Fisher, and Matt Cartwright will be asked to play important roles offensively and on the mound to help us reach our goal of competing for a national title.

With just the right blend of returnees and newcomers, this season will be nothing short of exciting for the Redlands baseball family. It’s a talented group of young men; 2008 looks to be fantastic year for Cougar Baseball!

Redlands Baseball 2008 Redlands Baseball 2008Matt newgent - Head CoachMatt Newgent begins his fifth season as head coach for the Cougar baseball team. Under Newgent’s guidance, the Cougars finished last season with a 44-15 record and a #3 national ranking. For the second straight year, the Cougars won the Bi-State Conference with a 14-6 record and followed that up with three straight victories in the Region II tourney to repeat as Region II Champions. The Cougar’s season ended in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a loss to Scottsdale who went on to finish 3rd in last year’s World Series in Millington, TN. Since Coach Newgent’s arrival five years ago, the program has again regained its prominence nationally. Newgent and his staff spent the 2007 off-season continuing a renovation of the Cougar baseball facility, while recruiting quality student-athletes to ensure continued success for the program.

Newgent began his collegiate athletic career at Redlands Community College as a catcher under former coach Don Brown. During that season, the Cougars went to the NJCAA World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished fourth. After leaving RCC, Newgent completed his collegiate playing experience at the University of Indianapolis. His collegiate accolades include all tournament catcher honors at the NJCAA World Series, two-time member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) All-Conference Team and Academic All-Conference Team, NCAA North Central Region Team, and Most Valuable Player during his senior season at University of Indianapolis.

Prior to coaching at RCC, Newgent served as Assistant Baseball Coach at Olney Central Community College in Olney, Illinois, where they finished with a record of 40-20 and a trip to the Region 24 Tournament. He was also the Assistant Baseball Coach at University of Indianapolis for three seasons and helped guide the team to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series in 2000, and a school best 51-15 record in 2001.

Newgent is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association. He earned his Associate of Arts from Redlands Community College in 1997, his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1999, and his Master of Business Administration in 2002 from the University of Indianapolis.

Coach Newgent, a native of Piedmont, now resides in Yukon with his wife, Christa.

attractive and easily accessible to Dallas-Fort Worth, Amarillo, Tulsa, and Wichita. The main campus encompasses 55 acres and includes seven buildings geared toward learning for the mind and body. An additional 110 acres houses the Darlington Agriculture Education and Applied Research Center. The Redlands Royse Ranch, which serves as the headquarters of RCC bovine and equine operations, offers nearly 315 acres of ranchland. Redlands’ mission is to prepare students for the future by providing a flexible curriculum, a supportive technology structure and a professional faculty and staff. Admission and enrollment are year round. The low student/teacher ratio at Redlands allows for more personal attention and individualized instruction. In addition, tuition is among the most affordable in the region. Life outside the classroom is enhanced by a variety of activities, including clubs such as Student Senate, Aggie Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Native American Club, Student Nurses’ Association, Black Culture Organization, and Fellowship

Redlands Baseball 2008 Redlands Baseball 2008
