Initially returning to report to the General Manager and assuming national responsibility for Pick Up and Delivery cost and service, Barry eventually replaced the former General Manager (his former position). After a short time Barry was given a position on the board of this family owned business.

During this tenure, the business (Allied Overnight Express) has continued to grow with revenues now over $70 million per annum. Bottom line results have improved year on year.Barry was also instrumental in securing the Holden logistics contract in 2006 for Allied Express. The contract was for the supply of inbound parts logistics from suppliers in Adelaide directly into the vehicle building plant. This contract was worth $4million per annum. As senior account manager and prime operational contact, Barry was critical in this contract being awarded again to Allied in 2010. Allied was also successful in securing extra work including the Melbourne inbound plant logistics, the establishment of a full cross dock operation in Adelaide as well as the contract for the plant shuttles and movement of steel blanks. This contract is now worth $9million per annum.

Regional Operations Manager (Oceania) – Express Logistics

Responsible for the operations and administration of 3PL express logistics for companies including NCR, Phillips, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, Hewlett Packard and others. The network of small warehouses was established to ensure that client SLA’s for computer recovery, ATM repair and other time critical technology failures were met by the ability to supply parts within 2 hours throughout Oceania.Management and responsibility for 11 sites throughout Australia and New Zealand reporting directly to the Express Logistics team in Singapore.

Short term assignment to investigate transport service failures on the NSW Government supply contract. Resulted in streamlining dispatch and ensuring orders dispatched on time and in full to optimise transport sub-contractor companies ability to hit service targets. Recruited to take over and grow the Express Transport business known as Executive Express which was majority owned by Allied Express. Successfully integrated the business with the existing courier business. Established network platform to allow AOE to operate largely independently from major competitors by using direct regional delivery agents.Set up a scanning platform that allowed real time track and trace across metropolitan branches and visibility of freight sent out into the network.Developed innovative products including pre-alert services, double peel labels and the fastest same day interstate airfreight service at that time.

Mayne Nickless Ltd

Volunteered to take up this position due to the restructure of the state management team. A major change program was being undertaken in the remaining 3 Mayne Nickless businesses and the Wards Skyroad business was the biggest. The Erskineville hub was the centre of the inter and intrastate operational network. The Bankstown depot controlled all of the interstate air service for the major banks and other major corporations.Barry was given this role because of his experience in establishing the intrastate network in company with a small team at Security Express some years earlier and his knowledge of the different business units which the corporation was integrating into one operational entity.This business has now been fully integrated and is known as Toll Priority.

Mayne Nickless Courier Systems

State Operations Manager

Barry was recruited back to Mayne Nickless specifically to assist the team at MNCS manage the industrial situation. Specifically taking responsibility for driver and union management, Barry successfully avoided any lost time whilst implementing a changed allocation system that ensured jobs were allocated according to the driver EBA, whilst improving driver earnings and service.Established “Radio Auburn”; a weekly radio forum, after hours, where drivers used their vehicle radios to communicate directly with the management, with the union delegates involved. This open communication channel allowed disenfranchised drivers (either from the union or the management) an opportunity to raise issues and have answers from management provided in an open environment for all drivers.

Linehaul Manager

Recruited to add to the experience within the senior team at this rapidly growing business, Barry successfully took over the PM Operations at Smithfield and manage the linehaul for the state business. Loading out over 800 tonnes of freight via a highly automated freight sorting system was a nightly task. The business was rapidly growing and during Barry’s tenure the depot was extended which meant operating around construction and major capital works.Barry was offered the National Logistics Managers position but chose to return to Mayne Nickless.

Mayne Nickless Ltd

Ipec Road Express

Sydney Manager

Sent to Ipec to review the management performance, Barry started as the AM Manager and reduced the supervisory staff from 16 to 9. A number of large scale changes were made, including the introduction of a “job and finish” arrangement with the employees. This reduced excessive overtime and the need for outside casual

staff. The savings resulted in a turn around of $5million in the business results from one year to the next.Introduced daily reporting of business drivers and involved supervisory and management staff in the achievement of these results. Barry led team meetings with yard delegates and achieved their support in all of the restructure plans that were implemented.Barry was eventually promoted to take over the business as NSW Operations Manager when the State Manger, State Operations Manager and Sydney Branch Manager were moved to other positions or left the company.

Interlink

State Operations Manager

This was new business created from the integration of four separate brands. Hammond Palmer, Seapak, Intermodal and Railex. All four businesses were underperforming and they were integrated to provide synergies. Barry reduced cost by moving from a fixed employee, company owned equipment model to a hybrid of employees and sub-contractors. Moved the steel contract from Tasmania to Yennora from a road delivery system with 4 dedicated trucks to a rail transit to Yennora. The train could then be unloaded and delivered by one truck, significantly reducing the amount of assets engaged.This business was sold to Toll when Mayne Nickless decided that the strategy was flawed. Barry was offered another position within Mayne Nickless.

Security Express

Moved Security Express from number 7 to number 1 on the Mayne Nickless world wide Days Sales Outstanding measure of credit collection performance.Moved to Internal Sales and built a simple tool to measure prepaid satchel/sticker usage and predict clients need to re-order. This proactive management meant that clients were locked in as well changing a revenue stream from pay at end of month to pay in advance.Restructured PM Night Key Entry runs to reduce from 13 to 11. This resulted in a real cost saving of 15%.

Led team that worked with the union delgates to restructure metropolitan bank and freight pick up and delivery runs resulting in 38 agreed redundancies and a saving of over $100, 000 per week on the total operating cost. This was done and implemented within a 3 month period.Worked with one other manager on the planning and implementation of the aircraft network on NSW to start a system from nothing. This operation commenced without fault involving 19 fixed wing aircraft and over 300 drivers. Consolidated the Auburn and Bankstown depots to provide an integrated operation between the air operation (bank network) and the road freight network saving one rental.

In 2005 Barry was finalist in the “Green Faces” national Stand Up Comedy competition. Barry is a professional stand up comedian and continues to perform in his spare time.

In 2011 Barry performed as part of a four person show in the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

In 2010 Barry was co-producer of the Australian movie “Up the Aisle” which was selected for the 2011 Dungog Australian Film Festival. Barry also helped write and edit the script as well as fulill the role of First Assistant Director during the actual film shoot. Barry, with the Director, oversaw every piece of the sound recording, music selection, editing and final cut of the film.
