The Knowledge In an era in which most of us are increasingly depend-ent on digital crutches like calculators, computers, and GPS devices, rather than our God-given mental capaci-ties, to navigate ourselves through our daily tasks; would-be cab drivers for the streets of London, England are still required to pass what has been called by generations: “The Knowledge”. “The Knowledge” is a progressive series of tests con-ducted by no-nonsense examiners that require a Lon-don cabbie wannabe to be capable of determining the shortest and most efficient trip from one location to another anywhere within London and to accurately answer any question any passenger may have about any restaurant, landmark, or point of interest any-where along the way. To the typical American, this may seem like an easy enough task to master until one realizes that London consists of a labyrinth of 25,000 streets with hundreds of years of historical significance. As one news article on “The Knowledge” elaborated: “Examiners may ask a would-be cabbie to identify the location of any restau-rant in London. Any pub, any shop, any landmark, no matter how small or obscure - all are fair game. Test-takers have been asked to name the whereabouts of flower stands, or laundromats, or commemorative plaques.” One test taker was asked “the location of a statue, just a foot tall, depicting two mice sharing a

piece of cheese. It’s on the façade of a building in Phil-pot Lane, on the corner of Eastcheap, not far from Lon-don Bridge.” (New York Times, The Knowledge, Lon-don’s Legendary Taxi-Driver Test, Puts up a Fight in the Age of GPS by Jody Rosen, August 20, 2055). With cabbie wanna-be’s studying for hours upon hours, and driving motor scooters for tens of thou-sands of miles around London for an average of at least four years or more, it’s little wonder that passing the series of required examinations and finally earning one’s “green badge” to drive one of London’s boxy black cabs is said by many to be the “most difficult test in the world”. Additionally, scientists have also discov-ered that because of the rigorous and demanding men-tal disciplines that are required, the “posterior hippo-campus” the area of the brain responsible for memory, actually grows larger in London cabbies than in most typical humans. The rigors required to pass “The Knowledge” com-municate a measure of confidence to every Londoner or foreign visitor that the cabbie they hail has the nec-essary skills and aptitude to ferry them around any place in London one may wish to visit, no matter how obscure that location may be! Ponderings of Patience (continued from front page) who proclaim the Christian faith as our spiritual heritage and identity; when it comes to mental disciplines concerning our spiritual identity, most of us are woefully lacking in appropriate knowledge about that which we profess! I for one am humbled by the fact that in the history of one church I served, there were three former pastors in the 1800’s that had such an exhaustive comprehension of the scriptures that each of them was capable of reciting from memory any portion of the King James Bible. Yet, in our day it is a struggle for many believers to recite the Ten Commandments. Even at funerals, many believers struggle to recite with the pastor the 23rd Psalm or even the Lord’s Prayer. Given the notion that believers affirm that being present with our loving God in his heavenly realm is our ultimate destination, it would seem obvious that we would be more interested in acquiring the knowledge and understanding of what it means to be God-like. Knowledge that is easily acquired simply by studying the Bible God has given us! But alas, it seems that we are so often distracted by the myriad of concerns that bombard us from the dawn to the dusk of each new day. Yet, just like the London cabbie garners great respect for earning a “green badge”, shouldn’t it be an equally engaging enterprise for Christian believers to be dutiful in our knowledge and behavior in what it means to be followers of Christ? For the words that the Apostle Paul offered in instruction to his young apprentice Timothy, stand as firm advice to each of us as followers of Christ today. For Paul said to Timothy: “Do your best to win full approval in God’s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his work, one who correctly teaches the message of God’s truth” (II Timothy 2:15). With this aspiration in mind, though, we realize that it’s quite likely that many of us could never earn the right to be a London cabbie. We may be among those people who, no matter how hard we may try, we’ve not been blessed with the mental capacities to memorize and immediately recall immense fragments of information. Yet, we can be most appreciative for the gospel truth that it will not be by works that we are saved, but rather, it will be because of God’s infinite grace. So in our humble ineptitude, although we may realize that we should always be striving to learn and appreciate as much as we can about our Christian faith and display its tenants through our words and actions, we are grateful that we can claim Ephesians 2:8-5 as the means of our salvation. For in this text, Paul declares: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” So in summary, may we all appreciate and strive for “the knowledge” of what it means to identify ourselves as Christian believers, but may we most of all, revel in the abundance of God’s redeeming grace! Pastor Dennis

WELCOME NEW MEMBER: Elizabeth Carroll On the first Sunday of this New Year of 2017, we were blessed with the privilege to formally welcome Elizabeth Carroll into the membership of Barry Christian Church as she answered the invitation after the morning message at the 10:00 worship ser-vice on New Year’s day. Many of you know that Elizabeth has been an invaluable partner in many of the ministries we experience in our fellowship at Barry Christian Church over the last several years, but it was heartwarming for all of us to welcome her into our membership!

Tower of Hope for Hope House --OUTREACH

Once a year we focus on collecting items for the Hope House,

which provides a safety net to those suffering from abuse in the

Kansas City metro area. Weaving together safety, support and

hope helps give victims the ability to start a new life, free from

abuse. Their needs are many, but right now they really need

toilet paper, paper towels, diapers and baby wipes. We will be

collecting from Sunday, January 8th until Sunday, February 5th.

JANUARY EVENTS WE ENJOYED

The NEW Pictorial Church Directories have arrived and are being

passed out to those who had their pictures taken. We are very

happy to have this updated tool for staying in touch with

everyone that considers Barry Christian Church their home

church. Soon we hope to have additional

smaller versions of the directory available on

sale for $5 each. If you want to keep the big

one at home and a small one in your car, you’ll

want to consider buying the little one when it

becomes available. Thanks so much to every-

one who helped make this new directory a

reality, especially Barbara Mayberry and

Gayle Gentry.

Executive Board Meeting Sunday, Feb. 5th 2017 at

NOON in the Upper Room

Wheels of Compassion for the Week of Compassion Beginning in February, Rev. Hope Attenoffer, a retired Disciples minister from Northern Califor-nia, and her husband, Scott, will begin riding their bicycles from San Diego, California to St Au-gustine, Florida to raise funds and awareness for the domestic disaster responses made through our annual Week of Compassion Offering taken in February. With the theme of “Wheels of Compassion” for the Week of Compassion, the two of them have been inspired by Week of Compassion’s commitment to provide immediate relief and long-term recovery support to many communities through the several states they will ride through. Along their ride they will be highlighting the benefits already given to communities that have been affected by severe storms and fires over the past several years – from wildfires in Califor-nia and floods in Texas to tornadoes in Mississippi and hurricanes in Florida. As they bicycle through each community, Hope and Scott plan to share the stories of how Week of Compassion is always present in time of significant need. With 3,000 miles in 50 days, they hope to raise $25,000 for the Week of Compassion Offering. Hope has said when she rides her bicycle, it is like prayer. The rhythms of her pedaling, the rushing sound of wind, and the steady movement onward are meditative. “I ride with inten-tion,” she says, finding that in the solitude of a ride, she feels deeply connected to God and to others. On this ride, as they make their way across the southern United States, Hope and Scott carry in prayer and intention the thousands of people affected by disasters every year in the United States. On Sunday, February 22th we will receive this year’s Week of Compassion offering, but if you would like to follow Hope and Scott on their promotional bicycle tour for this special offering, you can go to wheelsofcompassion.org. during the next five weeks.

Would you like to see Andrew Schmidt perform at Starlight Theater?

He will be in a show in February called “First Date.” It is a musical

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER The Northland Church Women United invites members of Barry Christian Church to participate in our "Prayer Chain for World Day of Prayer". Just say a prayer for PEACE daily. It can be for anything of your choice, peace in families, schools, airports, prisons, churches, Washington DC, everyone's heart, etc. Then make a link for our prayer chain. Anne Jones, Sue Effie, or Freddie Nichols have strips of paper to use. These must be turned in for World Day of Prayer on March 3rd at the Northland Church of the Latter Day Saints. You may give your papers to the ladies above or bring to World Day of Prayer. Barry can make that Prayer Chain a lot longer.

Thanks,

Anne Jones

When many of us were growing up at Barry, we were blessed by one of the strongest women in ministry that I've ever known. Estherbelle McFarland was a thousand percent dedicated to the ministry by sharing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Junior Church, as it was called in those days, was a kid-friendly version of "Big Church", where our parents went to hear the inspired teachings of Estherbelle's husband, who we affectionately called "Brother Mac". The ministry team of Brother Mac and Estherbelle was legendary...I even read people's memories of them in the Facebook group "Growing Up Barry" (check it out if you haven't already). Brother Mac and Estherbelle were followed by another legendary ministry team, Bob and Barbara George. Barbara continued the children's ministry Estherbelle had begun until their retirement just a few years ago, while Bob preached timeless and inspirational sermons "upstairs" in "adult church". Bob and Barbara's daughter, Gina Schaer, continues the traditions of her mother to this day during the 8:30 service. Such a strong, inspirational tradition of children's ministry we have at Barry Christian Church! We began a pattern of growth about a year ago, when we welcomed a number of families with young children to our Barry Church Family. The number of children during second service grew significantly, and we began to need additional leadership during Children's Church. We are grateful to those who stepped up and took on roles as we re-vamped a bit, and even created two groups of children for Children's Church services more tailored to their ages. Of course this requires additional adults to accomplish, and we are truly grateful to Craig and Caren Krauss who recently began leading the younger children in experiential learning, and Anna Eacret who recently began leading the older children in more traditional learning through Bible study and some hands-on learning as well. But wait...there's more! Children's ministry actually begins in the nursery. Under the compassionate and energetic leadership of Rita Knopf and a number of assistants, children from infants to ages 3 or 4 begin learning Bible stories and lessons, and worship through Christian music. I initially began compiling a list of everyone who has been, and continues to lead or assist in Barry's Children's Ministries, but I know if I try to thank everyone on that list individually, I would likely miss a few. So in my desire not to overlook or offend anybody, I'll say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has been part of Barry's Children's Ministry...you know who you are, and awards await you in Heaven. Lastly, let's put things in perspective...the children are only at Barry a few hours each week. They begin their spiritual walk at home, with you their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, neighbors and friends. They learn to love the Lord before we see them. Without you leading your children in a relationship with Jesus Christ, our work here would not matter. Our role in their lives is very brief, but yours is ever so impactful. When you live your lives in the ways Jesus teaches, your kids will follow you in those ways. We are grateful that the place your kids follow you to is Barry! Love, Jim

Church Calendar for upcoming weeks

Winter Jam 2017 What a great night with some amazing artist and more importantly great friends! We had a total of 20 members from Barry Christian Church attend the concert. We enjoyed music from Colton Dixon, Sara Reeves, OBB, Britt Nicole, Newsong, Crowder and more. We also heard from speakers Tony Noland and Sadie Robertson. There is something about being surrounded by 14,000 people worshipping at the same time but even in the crowd I could hear members of our youth singing with their hands held high! I always leave the service rejuvenated and full of hope. We had some first timers this year and they expressed how being sur-rounded by so many people made them feel like we are not alone. We look forward to next year! Blessing, ~ Anna Eacret
