ANNUAL REPORT 2012
Barracks RowMain Street
A MESSAGE FROM TIP TIPTONPRESIDENT, BARRACKS ROW MAIN STREET
the goods and services we offer and our customer outreach has extended far and wide. Our primary market base began in the Capitol Hill neighborhood but that is expanding every day to the Greater Washington, DC area.
Barracks Row Main Street could not have enjoyed this success without the help of its visionary Board of Directors, energetic volunteers, innovative sponsors, and generous financial contributors. A big “THANK YOU” to everyone who contributed to Barracks Row Main Street this year. We can all be proud of what we have built together.
Our Board of Directors and Executive Committee spend countless hours in meetings and discussions shaping and facilitating the growth our corridor is experiencing. Our volunteers contribute people-power to make possible a growing roster of events like Taste of 8th, the Culinary Education Crawl, Barracks Row Fall Festival, and Santa Arrives on 8th Street. Each event
brings to the Row crowds of people, many returning patrons, and many still reporting they never knew we existed, but plan to be back soon.
Our events are sponsored financially and in-kind by a diverse group of supporters, intent on assuring that the revival of 8th Street, SE, continues and grows. From CSX to Trapeze School New York, from the Capitol Hill and Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement Districts to the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development and the National Community Church, to name only a few, event sponsors add both creative and monetary spark to uplift our programming.
Our annual Garden Party fundraiser has become a greatly anticipated tradition. The Garden Party is not only a fund raiser, but also a “friend” raiser, and a business building event connecting the Barracks Row community to local and national politicians and entrepreneurs, as well as to corporate, association and military leaders who live and work among us. Through the efforts of the multi-talented Host Committee, led by Cynthia Jones, the Garden Party showcases the chefs of Barracks Row, while neighbors and supporters meet, mingle and celebrate the best of life on Capitol Hill.
Dear Friends of Barracks Row Main Street:
2012 was an outstanding year for Barracks Row Main Street. New businesses have joined our ranks, expanding
Because of our generous financial contributors it is possible to afford offices, utilities and staff. We leverage your donations to continue bringing in grant funding. Our office on Barracks Row allows us to play a hands-on role in day-to-day decisions affecting our corridor. Our staff solves problems while they are small and coordinates the many details of event development, economic revitalization, and facade improvements.
Financial contributors also make it possible for our organization to hire a special group from the Capitol Hill BID’s Ready, Willing and Working program to keep Barracks Row clean during our busiest days of the week, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, by providing extra coverage in addition to what the Capitol Hill BID already does. BRMS is the only DC Main Street with a 7-day a week clean team. This team also allows us to beautify the corridor with colorful seasonal plantings in our public space planters and light pole baskets.
On behalf of the Barracks Row Main Street Board of Directors, thank you for another remarkable year. Thank you for your ongoing support of our program, our street, and our community. None of this would be possible without your help.
BARRACKS ROW FACADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM 2012 saw the continuation of Barracks Row Main Street’s popular facade improvement program. Several Barracks Row businesses received assistance in restoring historic elements of the facades on their buildings, structural repairs, improved lighting, new signage, and new awnings.
Barracks Row Main Street makes these improvements available to 8th Street businesses through generous grants from the DC Department of Housing and Community Development and other government partners.

PUBLIC SPACE ENHANCEMENT PROJECTS
Barracks Row Main Street works every fall to plant bulbs to add to our existing daffodils, dwarf iris, and crocus that greet visitors to the street every spring, and we pride ourselves in our summer hanging baskets that overflow each year with bright petunias.
We also work with community arts groups and public and private partners to bring placemaking elements, like our now famous Barracks Row street clock and our freeway mural project, to add life and color to our street. These are just a few of the public space improvement projects Barracks Row Main Street helps to make possible.

A MESSAGE FROM MARTIN SMITH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Barracks Row never ceases to amaze me. 2012 saw even more explosive growth on Barracks Row. A dozen new businesses made 8th Street their home, we saw record attendance at our annual events like the Taste of 8th and the Fall Festival, and we added new event options including the Culinary Education Crawl to bring more “feet to the street,” as our Marketing Manager Sharon Bosworth likes to say.
We completed a number of public space improvement and facade enhancement
projects in 2012. Our beautiful hanging baskets and street planters were again bursting with color and historic properties on the street were restored to the glory of days past.
None of this could ever happen without the support of the community buying tickets to our events, donating to our program, and of course volunteering with us. So, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire Capitol Hill community for all of your help. Barracks Row really is an inspiring place to come to work every day.

A MESSAGE FROM PATTY BROSMERMANAGING DIRECTOR
While most people are familiar with many of the things that Main Street programs do, from historic preservation to small business recruitment and retention, creating quality public spaces to developing engaging events that bring customers to the street, many do not notice the extensive maintenance of the street that takes place every day.
Barracks Row Main Street, through a generous grant from the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development, pays for supplemental Clean Team services on the
street on high-traffic Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
This funding, combined with the partnership between Barracks Row Main Street and the Capitol Hill BID, enables us to bring the Men in Blue to the street seven days a week to keep the trash and recycling collected, pull weeds out of the treeboxes, and keep Barracks Row clean and safe. Please join me in saying thank you to the Men in Blue when you see them on the Hill. Without their hard work, rain or shine, the street would not be what it is today.
A MESSAGE FROM SHARON BOSWORTH MARKETING MANAGER
TASTE OF 8TH Few “tasting events” compare to Barracks Row’s Taste of 8th. With most of our restaurants participating, ticket buyers can easily plan a customized, five-course progressive lunch for the price of one affordable “five-pack” of tasting tickets. Begin light with sushi or a crab wanton appetizer, try low-country shrimp and grits, then on to lollipop lamb chops. Next, savory waffles with beer sampler (one dark, one light) followed by tiramisou. Always a sell-out, be on the lookout for our Newsletter or Hill Rag April column with this year’s Taste of 8th details.
BARRACKS ROW EVENTS
BARRACKS ROW FALL FESTIVAL ON CAPITOL HILLOur longest running event, the Barracks Row Fall Festival blends the curiosities of small town fairs with urban diversity. Sponsors, event partners, and participants include the United States Marine Corps, the Trapeze School New York, DC State Fair, the Military Hospitality Alliance, the National Community Church, the National Capital Bank, the Playseum, the Capitol Hill BID, the Capitol Riverfront BID and CSX. Walk the midway and capture the feeling of the greatest free show on earth, or, at least in the DC metro area.
SANTA ARRIVES ON 8TH You remember, don’t you? Telling Santa what you wanted for Christmas. This is the same event from your childhood, with a few twists. Neighborhood kids watch Santa arrive by fire truck to celebrate the legendary Barracks Row Fire Department. Parents can download photos free from our website. Dogs and cats can visit Santa, too. The only charge ever is a toy for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
THE CULINARY EDUCATION CRAWLThis is your chance to finally go to cooking school by signing up for classes at our restaurants! Our newest event, the Crawl was created by our Business and Building Owners Committee. Watch for a second semester to be added to the next Crawl Calendar resulting in a Winter Crawl and Summer School.

YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS!Barracks Row Main Street is fortunate to have numerous grants to help us carry out our mission of an ever-improving Eighth Street, however our day-to-day operations are mostly dependent on generous contributions and support from the Capitol Hill Community. We’d like to extend a special thank you to all of our 2011 cash and in-kind donors, and especially to our volunteers. We could not do this alone!
