WEDNESDAY 3rd JULY 2019

Term 2 is rapidly drawing to a close and it has been a very busy term. We have had a large number of students representing the school both sporting and academic. There has been touch football, softball, netball, rugby, debating, and even a mathematics excursion. Our students have represented the school to the highest level as Safe, Respectful, Learners.

The hard work in the classrooms will culminate in Semester 1 Reports. Reports will be sent home in week 10 along with information about Parent/Teacher interviews. When reading your child’s report card try to emphasise the positive. Praise your child for their improvement and achievements – and try to be specific with your praise. For example, ‘I’m really pleased with your progress in science. You have been working so hard and have improved so much since the beginning of the year’.

Your child’s report card is a great indicator of academic areas your child is excelling at and where they can improve. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s report or their progress at school, or if there are any areas where your child needs some support contact their teacher – they can tell you what we can do at school to support your child’s learning and how you can help at home.

Positive Behaviour for Learning has now been operating in the school for a year. It is key that we all follow the all settings expectations of being Safe, Respectful, Learners. The next stage in our PBL is to complete an evaluation and set some new directions. Jo Officer our PBL coach will be coming to school early next term to help us in this process.

A reminder that students should not be at school prior to 8:30 in the morning. Active supervision is provided from 8:30 at both campuses. In the afternoon students catching the buses will be supervised. Only secondary students that catch the first town bus are permitted to catch buses from the Primary school.

Don’t forget school photos next Wednesday. All students will need to be in their full school uniform. For the secondary girl’s uniform both black and green long pants are acceptable. For senior girls a long tartan skirt has been added to the uniform.

This is available from Lowes and is the same as the Peel High and Wee Waa High pattern. Leggins are not part of the school uniform. If any student needs help with their uniform please do not hesitate to contact me.

From the P&CDear Parents

Our school’s P&C raises money to improve our school for our children. There is an upcoming fundraiser for which we are seeking volunteer help from the parents and families of all children from K-12.

Frost Over Barraba have offered us a good position for a cake stall on their busiest day Saturday 6 July 2019. The stall will be on Queen Street sited between the Barraba Pharmacy and The Playhouse Hotel. Nikki Allan the P&C President is coordinating the stall.

Could you help by baking something to sell at the stall? Baking can be done in advance and frozen or done fresh on Friday 5 July or Saturday 6 July 2019. Please drop baking to one of these places:

• the primary school office on Friday 5 July before 3pm

• the high school office on Friday 5 July before 3pm

• the cake stall by 9am Saturday 6 July on Queen Street

Sue Perek has volunteered to collect baking from the school offices and transport to the stall. Please label your baking with ingredients.

Could you help by setting up or manning the stall on the Saturday morning? If so please contact Nikki on 0439698558.

Running Challenge.......With a few disruptions and a nasty cold and flu seasoning around the Running Around Australia Challenge fitness has plateaued. However students seem to be making some personal bests as they try to get as many laps as possible within the 5 minute time limit. Mrs O's Year 3 class are still blitzing the competition but anything can happen!!!

The leader board is as follows:K/1 - 17.52km 1/2 - 34km3 - 71.6km4/5 - 19.22km

On Tuesday 4 June 2019 an Under 16’s girls and boys team represented Barraba Central School at the North West Coastal Central Schools Regional Touch Competition held in Inverell. The bus left Barraba at 6.30am with the weather conditions freezing, slightly wet with sleat. Nevertheless the girls team won their first game against Bonalbo which was a thrill for all they then lost their other games vs Bundarra, Guyra and Ashford. Similarly the Boys team won their first game against Bingara then lost their next games to Guyra, Bowraville and Bonalbo. Both teams displayed a huge effort considering the minimal experience and the young ages of our teams. The boys and girls in our teams represented our school with an enormous amount of pride and their sportsmanship on the day was exceptional.

What is happening in English? This term in English students have been studying a variety of topics across the years. As the term heads downhill assessment tasks are coming due and students are encouraged to seek assistance and clarification when needed.

Year 8 have spent the term engaging in the graphic novel ‘Coraline’ (2008) for their Horror Genre study. They have completed writing tasks and creativity tasks, such as the reimaging of the novel cover and each Thursday complete literacy activities to boost their fundamental skills. Their task for this term is an in class activity due in week 8, where they will write creatively showing their understanding of the horror genre.

Year 9 have been completing a documentary study, looking at how conventions of the genre create meaning for the audience. They will be showing their understanding of the text by completing A Learning a n d Responding Matrix (ALARM) paragraph that uses a highly structured style to help students extend on their ideas, this task is due in week 9.

Stage 5 are exploring two topics this term, the first of which was Australian Poetry where they too completed an ALARM paragraph showing their understanding of how tone is used to create meaning. It was great to see an increase in participation from their term one task. They will be finishing off the term with a Documentary Study and will be considering the directing style of Michael Moore in their ALARM Essay response due in week 9.

The senior years have been avidly participating in the new syllabus, engaging in a variety of texts, preparing for their HSC. Year 11 are completing the Contemporary Possibilities - Module A Unit, looking at Sherlock Holmes, considering how the original Arthur Conan Doyle text has been redesigned for the 21st Century. They will be creating a display of their own

text that shows its adaption for their assessment task, due in Week 10. Year 12 are more than half way through their final year, careering toward their future, but before they get there they have the Craft of Writing (CoW) unit to complete, coupled with a Creative Writing Task for their assessment due in Week 10. Term 3 will be spent looking at the works of Oodgeroo Noonuccal and revising for their exams.

If you have any questions about your students’ progress in English please contact me and we can work together to help them progress in their studies.

Knockout Softball Competition We went to Tamworth on Thursday for a Knockout Softball Competition. We played 3 games with the first against Manilla and won by just 1 run. Next we played Westdale and lost by a few runs and then we played Tamworth Public. This wasn’t a competitive game as we could only play 1 innings as we needed to get on the bus early. I was very proud to be with these girls. They were able to put together all the skills that we had learnt though out the last few months and play some competitive games of softball. They showed great sportsmanship towards each other and their opposition. Well done girls. Mrs Ormiston Year 3 Teacher

Friday Night Rugby Round 5Fifteen of our students represented on what turned out to be an awesome night of rugby in round 6.

The two girl’s sides featured in semi-final football with both teams winning their two games to finish on top of the second tier of their competitions. Maddi Lott lead the way in the 16’s with barnstorming runs and solid defence (look out spectators!) and was ably supported by Jessie Lott, Nicola O’Dell and Abbey Thomson. Kiah Newell ran like a thoroughbred in the 14’s with Phoebe Hunter putting in a lot of work in the tough stuff in the middle. Lori Lott, Cate Bishton and Ruby Cheatley (on one leg) made contributions with the best try of the night being the winning team try in the second game which saw Lori recycle the ball, Phoebe bust the line and handle twice and Cate sneak over the try line under a barrage of opposition players. The backing up and handling skills were tremendous.

Next week will be grand-final night for the girls 10 a side competition and details are awaited as to whether the girls (having won the second tier) will be playing. We have been invited to submit teams for a seven a side competition to run during term 3.

The 16’s boys, who remain undefeated, had a bye. The 14’s were impressive in accounting for Farrer in a big win. Captain Nick Myers had his best game to lead the way and was well supported by Sam Bishton, Cameron Tonkin-Rose, Brandon Newell, Jack Coombes and Brock Phillips. The boys combined well with teammates from 3 other schools and the game was highlighted by desperate defence and a great running game. The huge improvement (from the first two games) of this thrown together barbarians side is attracting comment from referees and spectators. Well done boys.

The boys competition continues for another 2 weeks this term and then into term 3.

Our Barraba boys and girls continue to impress with their discipline and commitment on the field and positive attitude off and on the field. Other schools want to play with us and every week there are approaches from players and their parents who want to join us-so good work to you guys (let’s carry that on in your approach to other aspects of your school and lives!).

Points for round 6:

3 points-Maddi Lott, Nick Myers and Kiah Newell

2 points-Jessie Lott, Phoebe Hunter and Sam Bishton

1 point-Nicola O’Dell, Brandon Newell and Lori Lott

Thank you to Mr Melville and Mr Simpson and to Barraba Rams volunteers Shane Middlemiss and Zoe Darlington.

Tamworth Zone Touch Football On Friday 31 May 2019 Gemma White, Regan Simpson and Cooper Chapman went to Tamworth to play touch football at Tamworth Zone. The girls team played 6 games and won all games. Regan Simpson and Cooper Chapman were selected from the possibles and probabilities and will now play for the North West Zone in August.

Friday Night Rugby Round 6Round 6 turned out to be a great night of rugby for Barraba. Both 14’s and 16’s boys’ teams combined with teammates from other schools for convincing wins over the Farrer school in their respective games. Mackenzie Austin, Jono O’Dell, Jack Ward, Kane Ward and Max Gudshus made contributions in the undefeated 16’s team who appear bound for an appearance in the finals next term.

Riley Hunter at fullback and Nick Myers at half had outstanding games in the 14’s in a ‘Barbarians’ team of boys from 4 schools. The way that this team has melded together after only 5 games together is a testament to the good natured but competitive attitude of all the boys. Riley and Nick were well supported by Finn Allan, Brandon Newell, Jack Coombes, Bradley Nieborak and Cameron Tonkin-Rose. After a shaky start to the season that’s three wins on the trot boys-so well done.

The 16’s girls were very impressive in a comfortable victory in winning the Grand final of the second tier of their competition. Jessie Lott led the way and was well supported by her hardworking teammates Nicola O’Dell, Maddi Lott, Mia McArdle and Abbey Thomson in a combined team with girls from Manilla High. The girls hit their straps as the season progressed and the way they are playing now would have given any of the teams in the first tier a real scare.

The girls have the opportunity to play rugby 7’s in term 3 but for the moment let’s celebrate the fact that Barraba finished as champions in the second tier in both 14’s and 16’s (and broke the hoodoo of losing in Grand finals).

Points for round 6: 3 Points Jessie Lott and Riley Hunter. 2 points Nick Myers and Nicola O’Dell. 1 point to Maddi Lott, Finn Allan, Mackenzie Austin, Kane Ward and Jack Ward.

Thanks to Mr Melville and Mr Simpson and to Ferman Allan, Zoe Darlington and Jessica Kelso from the Barraba Rams.

The competition resumes in term 3 for both boys teams and for the girls (13’s, 15’s and 17’s in a rugby 7’s format). Team nominations for the girls needs to be submitted before the end of this term and I will review training arrangements with you guys during the week.
