Our Year 5 and 6 had a big week seeing the sights and sounds of Canberra. It has been great to follow their trip through the photos and hearing about the great experiences they have been having. It was great that we were able to combine with Manilla Central School and have such a wonderful trip. A big thankyou to Mr Neale for his organisation and for Mrs Coombes for giving her support and time. A massive thankyou to Rotary and the Masonic Lodge in Manilla for their generous donations towards this trip.

A big thankyou to Balgowlah North Public School who donated their Woollies Earn and Learn Stickers to our school. This has enabled us to supplement our Stem equipment with 5 extra lego robotics kits. The school now has a suit of robots, lego, iPads and video equipment to really enrich the learning for our students.

Primary school times re changing in 2020. During an audit of our curriculum it has been identified that the Primary school day is 20 minutes longer than Departmental requirements. This translates into an extra week of teaching over the year. The staff also identified that the last session of the day was also the most difficult for the students. The school has spoken with the P&C about changing the times at the Primary school. The day at the primary school would shorten by 20 minutes to finish at 2:50pm. Start times for the Primary would stay the same. Lunch would also be moved earlier in the day, which we hope would also benefit the students. If you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to contact the school. These changes will commence next year starting 2020.

HSC exams have finished with Visual Arts. Congratulations to Year 12 and I look forward to celebrating with everyone at our Farwell Dinner on the 22 November.

We have just received quotes on new furniture for the senior study, Mr Maloney’s room in the Secondary and Miss Shortt’s classroom in the Primary. This builds on the 5 spaces that we have refurbished in the last 2 years. Mrs Crowley and the stage 5 Ag students have start planning for the refurbishment of the Ag plot.

Don’t forget Presentation Day on Monday 9 December. We will be starting at 9:30 and we look forward to celebrating the great learning that has happened in 2019.

Brain Teaser You have 5 kids and you have to get them all into a car. Tommy and Timmy are twins but they fight so they

can't sit together. Sarah and Sally fight too, so they can't sit together. Max fights with his sisters so he can only sit by his brothers. There's 5 seats side by side and you have to put them in order. How would you seat the kids, so that everyone is happy?

Last Week’s Puzzle I am a word of six; my first three letters refer to an automobile; my last three letters refer to a household animal; my first four letters is a fish; my whole is found in your room. What am I?

Answer: Carpet.

2020 school travel applications now open

To assist with any enquiries you may receive regarding student travel applications, we have provided some information below.

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

· are continuing at the same school

· are residing at the same address

· have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator, this may be distributed via the school or sent direct to their address. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/Parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

School travel application endorsements

It is not uncommon for applicants completing the online form to make mistakes, particularly entering their name or date of birth instead of the students. This may be due to an auto-fill function on a device or just human error. We ask that school administrators pay special attention to the information supplied by applicants which come through in the school portal. If the information supplied does not match your records or the student is not yet enrolled, please do not endorse the application. By selecting ‘no’ the application will be referred back to the applicant to correct and resubmit.

In the event that school administrators endorse in error, it would be appreciated if you could advise our SSTS team as soon as possible so the application can be intercepted before an Opal card or travel pass is issued.

To contact us about an endorsement error, please go to: https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select feedback about: ‘school student transport scheme’ and then select ‘application updates’.

If school administrators require access to the school portal to endorse student applications, please request an account at https://appln.transport.nsw.gov.au/portal/requests/account/school

If you have staff that have left the school recently and had access to the school portal, please let us know at https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback and select ‘school/operator portal’ and then ‘remove existing user access’ so their access can be removed.

Thankyou to the Barraba Pre-school for a lovely morning spent at your fun Open Day

Thirsty? Choose Water!Behavioural Interventions and Water

Stations in Regional Secondary Schools

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Barraba Central School has agreed to participate in a research study which is exploring ways to promote and increase water consumption and decrease sugar sweetened beverage (SSBs) consumption in Year 7 students.

As reward for participation in this study our school will receive a Chilled Water Station, fully installed, completely free of charge. This will allow our students access to instant chilled water during breaks, and to fill their water bottles for consumption during class time if used appropriately. A great benefit as we head into the hot summer season.

We know that childhood overweight and obesity is a significant problem and has negative health effects on children both in the short and long-term. We also know that consuming sugary drinks such as soft drink, sports drinks, energy drinks and juices contributes to this. Therefore this is an important study to determine how we can encourage children to drink more water.

The surveys will be completed in your child’s class time and will take about 10 minutes. Your child will be asked to put their school, initials and date of birth on the survey. This is so we can look at the responses of students at the start and at the end to compare any changes. Your child’s details will not be used for any other purpose and their confidentiality and privacy is assured. The survey will ask questions about your child’s knowledge and awareness of sugary drinks, their consumption of these, and about their water consumption. If you would like to see a copy of the survey you can ask the school for this. Completing the survey is completely voluntary and your child will not be penalised if they don’t want to complete it.

If for any reason you do not wish your child to participate in these surveys, please inform the school by completing and returning the slip given to Year 7 students to the school office by Thursday 31st of October.

Ages 14-17

Year 3 have finished their term of procedure writing and making with Banana Sushi. The name scared a few students as they do not like sushi, however almost everyone had at least a nibble. There are definitely a few budding chefs in our class. The students have started or added to their own personal recipe book,so now they have a few recipes to try at home! As a class we have inhaled a sour cream dip, made scrambled eggs from the Ormiston’s oversupply of eggs, made a mess with a cereal slice and surprised some fussy eaters with yummy cinnamon toast! It has been fun!
