Montileaux, of Vermillion, received a $1,500 first place prize for winning the competition that was open to all USD freshmen, sophomores and juniors. Prizes were also awarded to students finishing second and third in the contest, which was judged by USD faculty and staff for originality, style and relevance to the announced topic. Samantha Taft, of Norris, SD, received a $1,000 prize for second place while Tyler Stolsmark of Hartford, SD, and Tyler Jordan Smith of Sioux City, IA received $750 each in a tie for third place. All four winners of the competition are Native American students and they were announced at the Tiospaye Wacipi powwow at the DakotaDome recently. Students entering the essay competition were required write at least 750 words and defend their opinion on a recent editorial in the Rapid City Journal that proclaimed South Dakota as a “state that readily advertises its Native population but regularly ignores its presece.” The contest also required students to explain how they would try to change the situation if they were in a position of authority in their community. According to Emily Haddad, acting chair of the Native Studies Department at USD, the amount of students entering the competition exceeded last year by about five times the entries received. “The essays were so good that the faculty committee reviewing submissions ended up awarding four prizes rather than the three that had been advertised,” she said. Montileaux awarded top prize in essay contest Katie Pacza, a graduate student from the University of South Dakota, was awarded first place at the South Dakota District National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award (NATSAA) competition at Northern State University in Aberdeen on March 24. Pacza, of Holstein, IA, received first in the Graduate Classical Division and qualified for the North Central Regional Competition in La Crosse, WS, on April 22. Natalie Campbell of Sioux Falls finished second in the Graduate Classical Division and will serve as the alternate to Pacza at the North Central Regional Competition next month. Pacza is a student of Tracelyn Gesteland, D.M.A., assistant professor of music (voice/opera at USD) while Campbell studies with Brandon Hendrickson, D.M.A., assistant professor of music (voice/opera) at USD. NATSAA, designed to assist singers prepared to launch their professional careers, is a young artist competition where students are required to prepare 60 minutes of music, including a portion that’s performed before a panel of three judges. Several USD students participated at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition that was also held at Northern State University on March 24. Aubrey Sea of Sioux City, Iowa was awarded first place in Women’s Musical Theatre and second in Sophomore Women’s Classical. Matt Black of Yankton received first place in Men’s Musical Theatre. Students awarded second place at the NATS contest included Amanda Rich of South Sioux City, NE, Senior Women’s Classical; Cody Perk of Yankton, Junior/Senior Men’s Classical; Jordyn Bangasser of Sioux Falls, Freshmen Women’s Classical; Jared Mogen of Sioux Falls, Sophomore Men’s Classical; Brian Rasmussen of Sioux City, IA, Freshmen Men’s Classical; and Hannah Lambertz of Yankton, was awarded second place in Women’s Musical Theatre. Additionally, Kristin Edwards of Aberdeen received third place in Women’s Musical Theatre, and Ashley Hogarth of Sioux Falls received honorable mention in Women’s Musical Theatre. In all, there were 122 entries from USD, South Dakota State University, Northern State and Black Hills State University. Kocher and Dr. Tim Farrell will present a concert on Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Colton Recital Hall in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts. The concert will feature special guest Scotty Barnhart, who has been a trumpet soloist with the Count Basie Orchestra for the last 20 years. Barnhart is a two-time Grammy Award winner with the Basie Orchestra and has performed on three critically acclaimed recordings by pianist Marcus Roberts and over 10 recordings with the likes of Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Ray Charles, and Tito Puente. Scotty recently released his debut solo CD with Unity Music titled Say It Plain. Acknowledged as one of the authorities on the history of jazz trumpet, he intently researched and wrote the ground breaking book The World of Jazz Trumpet - A Comprehensive History and Practical Philosophy.
