PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE We have reached Week 6 of Term 1. The term is flying by and there is still much happening in learning and for our students this term.
Congratulations to our students who competed in the PSSA District Swimming Carnival in Swan Hill last Friday. Our swimmers enjoyed a great day of competition and achieved some wonderful personal results. Apart from the individual events, Barham came away with two Age Champions, four Runners up, and Ayla McGowan (Year 3) won the Open Girls 100m freestyle. What fabulous efforts and results for our swimmers! We hope to have details of who has qualified for Riverina Swimming Carnival today and will issue notes to families as soon as possible.
Congratulations to Mason Jones and Eli Boyd who competed at the regional Tennis Championships last week. Both students played well and can be very proud of their efforts and achievements.

Years 5 & 6 students and their families are reminded that the District AFL Trials will be held this Friday in Barham, starting at 9.30am. Students trying out will be back at school before lunch. Mr Marsh has all the details. Also this Friday, we have Hockey Victoria visiting our school, running clinics for students throughout the day. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about hockey and have a go at some of the skills of the game. It will be lots of fun for everyone. This Thursday is International Women’s Day, a date that the Year 6 girls will mark with a special luncheon with Mrs Sweeney. See the newsletter for more details.
Enjoy the week ahead, and be sure to see what your child is up to in learning.

DISTRICT SWIMMING CARNIVAL Congratulations to all of our swimmers who competed at the District PSSA Carnival in Swan Hill last Friday. The day was an enjoyable day of competition, with Barham PS students performing very well individually and overall as a team. Sincere thanks to Mrs Mathers for her efforts on the day as the school’s team manager – taking up duties on the recording table at short notice. Our thanks go to the parents who then organised the students, helped out with timekeeping throughout the day, and who helped out with transport. Schools of our district are also grateful to Joan Walla for being Swim Judge on the day. Thank you, Joan for your generosity with your time and expertise.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year Barham Public School will be celebrating International Women’s Day by hosting a guest speaker and lunch for the Year 6 girls. The girls are very keen to discuss the topic “One Day I Will . . . “ FOOTY CARDS AT SCHOOL As mentioned last week, many students are bringing special toys and belongings to school to show in class, and share with their friends. Football cards are the latest trend, and we remind students and families that there is to be no trading of cards at school. The cards are great to play with but students are not to trade, swap or give away cards at school.
FORMAL K-6 ASSEMBLY Our next whole-school formal Assembly will be held on Friday 16th March at 2.00pm. Year 2/3 students will lead the Assembly and Year 4 students will be performing. All parents and carers and their families are invited to attend. 2018 SCHOOL FEES School families will have received a letter explaining the fees payable for 2018. The fees are made up of voluntary and fixed levies, and help the school cover the costs of important learning programs and school activities. Invoices will be issued this week. Please contact Mrs Peach if you have any questions about these fees or levies, or wish to discuss a payment plan. 2018 EXCURSIONS & PAYMENT PLANS The 2018 excursion planning will begin this week. School families are welcome to begin a
payment plan to cover the anticipated costs. Costs will be confirmed as soon as possible but the payment option can begin now. Any monies paid will be receipted against the student’s excursion. Parents can pay fortnightly or monthly to save towards the costs of their child’s excursion, or according to a personal plan that best suits family circumstances. Families requiring support are asked to discuss these options with Mrs Peach before the end of Term 1. THE SCHOOL’S CORE VALUES NSW public schools are committed to providing safe, supportive and responsive learning environments for everyone. Our school’s core values and the matrixes of expected behaviours for our school reflect the NSW Department of Education’s Behaviour Code for Students, listed below. RESPECT Treat one another with dignity Speak and behave courteously Cooperate with others Develop positive and respectful
relationships and think about the effect on relationships before acting
Value the interests, ability and culture of others
Dress appropriately by complying with the school uniform or dress code
Take care with property SAFETY Model and follow departmental, school
and/or class codes of behaviour and conduct

ENGAGEMENT Attend school every day (unless legally
excused) Arrive at school and class on time Be prepared for every lesson Actively participate in learning Aspire and strive to achieve the highest
standards of learning This Behaviour Code applies to all students attending a NSW public school, including Barham PS.
The values of Respect, Responsibility and Initiative have been identified through school processes as being at the core of positive relationships and success at our school. Promoting behaviours that reflect these values in every setting at Barham PS helps create an inclusive and safe environment where each and every student can learn. Barham PS’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) systems are in place to teach, encourage and reward students to behave in ways that are respectful and considerate of others. All students benefit from these systems, and from when school families likewise teach and encourage students to
show empathy, tolerance, kindness and consideration for others – behaviours that underpin respectful, inclusive relationships. As a result of the school’s self-assessment and feedback from the parent body, developing effective PBL systems is a priority of Barham Public School’s 2018-2020 School Plan. The aim is to build and sustain optimum conditions for student learning and respectful, productive partnerships across the school and its community. A PBL team of teachers is in place to drive this improvement process, where evidence-based decisions are taken to embed positive behaviours into our school’s learning culture. Class and playground behaviour management is an important element of the PBL systems, with the aim being to have students able to reflect on and own their actions. These management systems and K-6 teaching programs will build students’ self-awareness and skills of positive relationships so that they are equipped to make respectful decisions about how they will behave, interact and respond to others at school. To further promote these messages of respect and inclusion, our school has once again registered for the NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING being held on Friday 16th March this year. Details of class and whole-school learning activities will be issued next week.

FRIDAY ASSEMBLY AWARDS Each Friday after lunch (apart from the days set aside for the formal K-6 Assembly), students assemble to hear about upcoming events, learn about school activities and to recognise students’ effort and achievement. At this assembly, each class teacher presents one award – for positive behaviour and/or achievement in learning. Congratulations to the recipients of the Week 5 Class Awards.
Well done students!
REGIONAL TENNIS REPS
Congratulations, Eli and Mason on your performance at the regional championships. Well played! RIVER DAZE - P&C FUNDRAISING UPDATE
The P&C held their first fundraiser for the year on Saturday at the River Daze festival. Thanks to the small group of dedicated parents who assisted, this was greatly appreciated. However it was the exceptional teamwork of some BPS students that made the stall such a success. A huge thank you must go to Ebony Burger, Claire Polkinghorne, Alyssa Farrant and Meg McDonald for giving up their time on what was a very warm Saturday afternoon. These girls were the perfect ambassadors for our school and they should be proud of the way in which they conducted themselves, we certainly are. Watch this space for the next P&C initiative. Reminder that our next meeting is next Tuesday 13th March - see you there!
Rae Farrant P&C President

K/1 NEWS
K/1 enjoyed a visit from Tahlia's mum this week. She came in to share stories about when Tahlia was a little baby. Story telling is an important part of history and helps the students to learn about 'then' and 'now'. Students also need to learn to aquire information by talking to others and asking questions. We would love to hear stories about other children in our class. If you have a child in K/1 or know a child in K/1 and would like to come in and share a story about them from when they were little, please contact Mrs Buchanan.
