Hijinks Happenings The Wrap-Up

High Peaks Hijinks Rotary District 7190 2014

Conference May 3 – 4, 2014

High Peaks Resort Lake Placid NY

The 2014 District Conference was an enjoyable experience. The location and hotel exceeded expectations. The 18 month effort by the twenty-one member Team Hijinks committee paid off

One hundred and fifty-five participants including 6 Youth Exchange and 9 Interact and RYLA students traveled to Lake Placid ready for fun and frolic.

The highlight of the conference was the High Hopes Scratch-Off Raffle tree. Masterfully handled by Sue and Chas Owens, the Ficus tree bloomed with NYS Lottery tickets throughout the conference. Many donated prizes were available in a ‘Chinese’ auction format.

Greeters from clubs around the district welcomed Rotarians as they arrived. A giant banner was hung outside the hotel letting everyone know Rotary was in town. Registration volunteers completed the team as did the Adirondack Guides decked out in florescent chartreuse T-shirts on hand to direct Rotarians around the hotel and to the various sessions.

Beautifully Adirondack gift bags, hand-sewn by DG Sue, aided by her granddaughter, Josie, were handed out to all attendees. The Schenectady East Rotary Club sponsored the bags that were filled with 4-Way Test coins (gift from DG sue), notecards, antiseptic wipes and tissues, mini-bears filled with M&M’s and various other giveaways.

Young Rotarians were housed at the

Olympic Training Center for both Friday and Saturday evenings. This once-in-a-lifetime experience provided them tours of the Ski Jumps and other Olympic venues as well as the opportunity to meet athletes training at the center.

Thanks to the 46 individuals, clubs and organizations that supported the Youth at the Conference fund raiser this past February, $144 per student was available for Interact and RYLA to attend the conference.

The first of the promised Hijinks were the Conference Badges, a unique and amusing design created by Nick George. These badges caused much laughter and puzzled faces.

The House of Friendship was sponsored by the Saratoga Springs Rotary club and although Friday evening in the House of Friendship was an optional event most of the group stopped by for fun and fellowship and to hang their club banners. Our thanks to singer/songwriter Ray Agnew for the entertainment and kudos to Team Hijinks and the Dancing Bear for the party atmosphere. A great kick-off to the Conference.

For more detailed information please see the District Conference Minutes, however all the plenary, break-out sessions and events went very well. The District Bylaws were amended and the Council of Legislation representative was selected. Glens Falls Rotarian, John Mucha was introduced as the 2016-2017 District Governor.

Queen of the Hijinks, Arlene Schmidt, handed out special hats and conducted a Get Out and Vote parade during the meeting – well-received by the audience. Other Hijinks continued throughout the day and evening including a serenade by crooners Doug and Frank. Santa Claus stopped by from the nearby North Pole as did a number of Adirondack characters. The Dancing Bear made several appearances generating much

merriment from the Conference go-ers. Delicious hors d’oeuvres from Lake View

Deli in Saranac Lake were served during the Governor’s Reception and then we sat down to a scrumptious dinner ending with ice cream sundaes.

The Sunday sessions, beginning with the Remembering Rotarians service were very well-attended. DG Sue praised the work of the clubs in the district and presented a number of awards.

We ended with the prizes from the Scratch-Off Lottery – Two hundred and fifty-eight tickets brought in $1110 to be divided between The Rotary Foundation and ShelterBox. A donation to Polio was made in the name of Sara Jane Feldman, the winner, for $320.00

Special publicity including the kick-off skit at the changeover dinner in July, early registration, the monthly Hijinks Happenings newsletter, many articles in The Toolbox, and FB page along with club visits and lots of positive energy made this conference a household name.

The conference was also a financial success. With a carefully and realistically crafted budget and ongoing oversight of expenses and revenue to be sure we remained revenue neutral, we show a $1,216.16 positive balance.

Our contractual agreement with High Peaks required a minimum guarantee of $14,500 in hotel rooms and food so that we received free meeting rooms and all AV equipment at no charge. Our final bill was $22,600, more than satisfying our obligation to the hotel.

High Peaks Resort, Best Western in Saranac Lake and Wildwoods Motel all received high marks for accommodations, customer service and cooperation.

Southern Rensselaer County

Rotary Club Presentation On Thursday, June 12, the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club presented a check for $11,000 to members of the District 7190 Gift of Life.

From left: April Dowd, President of the Southern Rensselaer County Rotary Club, Ellen Strait, GOL President Tom Burdick, Dr. Melissa Ehlers and Bill Nathan The donation was the result of a pledge made by the club following a presentation by Dr. Melissa Ehlers concerning cardiac surgery here and medical missions abroad undertaken by the organization. The original goal was $10,000 by June 1. Instead, $11,000 was raised by mid-May. Southern Rensselaer has long been a staunch support of Gift of Life. Club members Dr. James Leyhane and president-elect Bill Dowd both are past 7190 GOL board members. The special fundraiser was to completely cover the expenses of bringing a child from a developing country for lifesaving cardiac surgery at Albany Medical Center.

Annual Installation Dinner and Awards Banquet

Amsterdam Rotary club recently held its annual awards and installation dinner at the Raindancer restaurant in the town of Perth. The well attended event honored its club members for their accomplishments and service they have done in the community and region during the year. Rotary is a worldwide association of clubs, its mission is to provide service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world understanding , goodwill and peace through its fellowship, of business, professional, and community leaders. At this years event the club awarded Giana Mancini from the Fonda Fultonville Central School as their Student of the Year. Giana has been an exceptional student and has volunteered many hours in her community and school. She has been active in the Make-a-wish Foundation, St. Cecelia's Church, JV basketball, the school drama club, and is in the National Honor Society. She will be attending Boston College in the fall, and she is the daughter of John and Donna Mancini of Fonda.

Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run

Several years ago an idea was shared in the

rooms of the Glenville Rotary; from that idea was born the Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run! The idea germinated into a committee of runners who dedicated their time, energy and passion to plan and orchestrate this inaugural event; the same year, month and day Hurricane

Irene came to out town; August 28th, 2011. Having to postpone the event (because the trail was a little too wet and muddy!), the event was rescheduled 10 days later with over 120 runners and community sponsors measuring a bakers dozen. It was a successful effort, a wonderful event beyond our imagination.

The spirit of our success was infectious, so we immediately began planning for the second annual event with the captivating thought that maybe we were, in fact, starting an annual Rotarian tradition, much like our annual golf outing, dictionary project and ziti dinner.

Two years since, we are now celebrating

our 4th Annual Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run

which will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 9:00am at the infamous Indian Meadows Park in Glenville. This event has been well-received by the runners because the course winds its way through woods and meadows (with some mild elevation changes) and, because it is one of the few trail runs in the capital region.

So ,besides having fun running on a great trail, why do we, as Rotarians, plan and orchestrate this event every year? Well, because we believe that every community needs volunteer support to make it a better place for families to live. Rotarians are notorious for giving their time and energy to the community and this is another example of that spirit, in the name of health and wellness. And each year, the Muddy Sneaker 5K Trail Run event raises money, from our wonderful sponsors and runner registration fees, to help us further our mission. This event dedicates a

generous portion of its proceeds to a select community organization that is doing great work in the community, with remaining funds distributed for other local Rotary projects. The following organizations have received donations from the Glenville Rotary thus far from the Muddy Sneaker event; Shellstrong Foundation (Burnt Hills), Samaritan Counseling Center (Scotia) and the Ellis Hospital Breast Care Center (Schenectady). This year we have chosen Things of My Very Own Inc. (Scotia) to receive event proceeds. Things of my Very Own Inc is a hometown 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides impoverished children, who are victims of abuse and neglect, with crisis intervention services, transitional assistance and fundamental life skills development. For more extensive information about the organization, please go to: www.tomvo.org.

So, we strongly encourage you to come out for this special event, whether you be a runner or spectator. We need your support each and every year!! If you have been with us since the beginning, thanks from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication and friendship. If you have been with us for one or two year's, we look to have you with us at future runs so that this event becomes as much of a tradition for you as it is becoming for the community. And, if you haven't come out yet, join us, it's not too late! You most certainly will be welcomed with open arms and you won't be disappointed. Many thanks! Details and other information about registration and the Muddy Sneaker event details can be accessed as follows: www.glenvillerotary.org.

Volunteers Needed for a

Medical Training Team to Bangladash (VVT)

Granville and Burnt Hills Ballston Lake

Rotary Clubs have twice co-operated with the Rotary Club of Dhaka West on successful Matching Grant projects in Bangladesh (cataract operations and operating theater equipment for an ENT hospital). As a result, Rey Whetten of Burnt Hills Ballston Lake and Steve Williams of Granville visited Bangladesh as guests of R.C. Dhaka West. Amongst the many places visited during the visit was Kumudini Hospital, some three hours’ drive from Dhaka. Later, the R.C. Dhaka West principle contact, Captain Mohammad Shafi, visited District 7190 while on a family stay in the USA. During that visit, in discussion with then DG Dan Stec and (then) Foundation Chair Anne Cargile, the possibility of a third project, a VTT to Kumudini Hospital, was put forward. Implementation was delayed until the Foundation’s “ Future Visions” program was implemented in the District. After further communications with Kumudini Hospital and R.C. Dhaka West, the District Grants Committee approved a grant of $10,000 to support the following logistics associated with a VTT to Kumudini Hospital.

• The VTT would comprise four members who would donate their time and visit Kumudini Hospital for a period of approximately four weeks. Such four members would, it is hoped, match four of the medical categories desired by Kumudini Hospital, as per a Needs Assessment submitted by Kumudini Hospital, which can be made available to anyone interested.

• District 7190 would bear the team’s travel expenses to and from Dhaka

• Kumudini Hospital would bear all travel

and living expenses of the VTT while in Bangladesh.

• R.C. Dhaka West would monitor the arrangements for and support the VTT while in Bangladesh.

• During development of the VTT, the team’s designated representative would liaise directly with Kumudini Hospital regarding both the

timing of the visit and the team’s activities while in Bangladesh.

At this point in time, and in spite of best efforts with both St. Peter’s Associates and Albany Med, volunteers for the VTT have still to be found. Toolbox readers who are either in the medical profession, or who have close contacts within the medical profession, are urged to contact Steve Williams, at 802 645 9529 or e-mail at [email protected] to discuss any contribution they might be able to make with recruitment. Information on Kumudini Hospital may be found at www.kumudinibd.com

Capital Region Rotary Club to Partner with

Albany County Sheriff for

Public Event to Highlight Community Programs

and Initiatives The Capital Region Rotary Club (CRRC) is

teaming up with the Albany County Sheriff’s Department to present “Fighting Crime with Sheriff Apple,” an event highlighting the Sheriff’s crime fighting efforts and community involvement.

The presentation will include a demonstration of the Sheriff Department’s MRAP vehicle and K9 unit, and will be held at Treviso by Mallozzi’s on Wednesday, July 9th at 4:30.pm. This event is free of charge and open to the public. No registration is required.

"We are excited to learn more about what Sheriff Apple and his team are doing in the community and to see how CRRC can help,” said CRRC Charter President (2013-2014) Jennifer Hendricks. “Our intention with this event is to spark an interest in our community’s youth. We need to start getting the younger generation involved with volunteering and giving back so that they know they CAN make a difference."

Incoming CRRC President (2014-2015) Jim MacFawn added “Sheriff Apple's work as a community advocate is an inspiration and CRRC is proud to have him as our distinguished guest. This event will be an educational evening about community involvement and how you can make a difference through Rotary.” Sheriff Apple is in his 27th year with the Sheriff’s Office and has received numerous awards. He sits on the Executive Board for

the Albany Boys & Girls Club and the Greater Capital Region United Way.

The Sheriff obtained the MRAP vehicle for free from Army surplus and it is utilized for Emergency Response. The MRAP has also been used at special events to demonstrate to the public the resources the Sheriff's Office has. The K-9 Program was re-implemented in 2012 with the NYS Police. The Albany County Sheriff’s Department currently has two K9 officers; one specialized in drugs and the other in bombs. Both dogs are able to track people as needed.

Chartered in 2013, the Capital Region Rotary Club is a group of young professionals who are committed to service above self. One of their most notable community achievements is their annual “Bins of Fun” project, which collects and delivers bins of toys and activities for the

Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center. The club is part of Rotary District 7190, which is based in the Capital District. To learn more about Rotary, visit http://www.rotary7190.org/

RYLA Update

This year we graduated 40 students from our RYLA program! Our program is still the only one in the

world that operates once a month throughout the school year. Thank you for supporting our future leaders and Rotarians.

It's time to start looking for students for next year's program. While this may seem early, with a start date of September 27 it doesn't leave much time if we wait until summer. Also, every school tells me that after Memorial Day it is very difficult to get students to sign up.

Attached is the program guide and includes our application. Do you know of a current sophomore in high school isn't already a strong leader but could be with the right training? Talk to your schools, your church youth groups, Interact and homeschoolers.

Financially, we don't ask the students for any money, just their commitment once a month. We pay for the program through the generosity of the clubs. Sponsorships still only cost $375 per student. Please consider putting money into your budget for next year to help make this program happen. We accept any amount you can give.

If you have questions you can contact me directly, as always at return email or 518-926-8688. Thank you, Nick... Nicholas George District 7190 RYLA Director

All About RYLA

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RYLA program all about? According to Rotary International: RYLA is an intensive training program for community youth leaders.

Young people chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.

For District 7190, RYLA is designed to grow leadership skills in students who have untapped leadership potential. Specifically, we are focusing on juniors in high school. Our program is not for the student who is already utilizing strong leadership skills or students who have no desire to develop such skills. Who is the RYLA program intended to serve?

As we stated earlier, District 7190 RYLA has been developed to help the committed student with untapped leadership potential. Through our program we will open up that potential and show the student the possibilities that are available to them.

This has positive effects on many parts of the student’s life. They will gain self-confidence, add valuable skills that will serve them well into their future, and will teach another generation about the ideals of Rotary. Why do we want to do a RYLA program? There are at least three reasons why we want to do a RYLA program in our district:

• First, it gives the world another youthful leader who has been trained in good ethics, critical thinking, and public service. The better training that our youth receive the more positive will be their contribution as adults.

• The second reason is for our clubs. When our Rotarians are exposed to the greatness that these participants find they can’t help but be more excited about not only the youth but also about the service they do. Rotarians also benefit from hearing and seeing new ideas, carried out in new ways.

• A third reason is for the future. One of the major issues facing our clubs, our district, and Rotary International, is the continued inflow of new members. The organization must keep adding new people in order to stay alive. This is a source of new members. If we expose the students to Rotary and show them what is possible we will be able to turn to them in a few years as new members. This is part of Rotary International’s long-range plan for RYLA as well as all youth programs
