From Fr. Matthew’s Desk

Making Room—With the fewer number of seats in the Church due to the COVID-19 restrictions, some people might be concerned about whether we can fit everyone if attendance increases. Our present overflow plan is to have those who cannot attend Mass in the Church to watch the Mass from the Social Hall using the live-stream, and to have an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion bring Communion to them. So far we have not yet had to do this for any of our Masses, but this option is always ready. Other options are available if we eventually find ourselves using the overflow every week—but the most important thing is that we will always work to make room for everyone who wants to attend Mass in person.

I can’t control the US Mail, but I can work around it—The challenges that led to last week’s note also prompted me to reconsider how we need to balance our print and digital communications now that some parishioners have begun to return to Sunday Mass. You will see some gradual adjustments in the upcoming weeks to this bulletin, our worship aids, and the website. As changes happen, my goal remains the same as before: to ensure that everyone remains connected to our parish family.

Wheat and Tares—In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear the parable of the wheat and tares (weeds) along with Jesus’ explanation of its meaning. The wheat represents the children of the Kingdom of Heaven, and the tares represent the “children of the evil one”—those who choose to run away from God and toward sin.

It is especially important to understand that the tares were not ordinary weeds—when the plants first began to grow, they were indistinguishable from the wheat! The householder doesn't want the weeds pulled because wheat might be pulled as well. Instead, he is content to wait until the fruits of each plant are evident—whether they made weeds or wheat.

In light of the Final Judgment that this parable represents, we are reminded why Jesus tells us that we are not to judge one another—it is because we can’t tell who the tares and wheat are. History is filled with Saints who are reformed sinners and seemingly-saintly figures who were outed as sinners and scoundrels; it is filled even more with people who simply struggled throughout a lifetime to reach a simple holiness through God’s help. Our role is not to point out to God the weeds or wheat—instead, our role is to produce good fruit as the “wheat”. As we do this, we also affect those around us—through our prayers and example we model the fruits we bear in hopes that others will do the same.

COVID-19 Self-Assessment Checklist

Parishes in the Diocese of Greensburg have been taking every effort to keep our churches “sacred and safe” as some parishioners choose to resume attending Mass. Part of this effort is continuing to wear a mask (or bandanna or other face covering) and social distance. We also ask you to consider some other risk factors using this self-assessment checklist. You will not be asked these questions when you come to Mass, but you should be aware of them out of consideration for others in the community. If you answer “YES” to any of the following questions, we ask that you please not visit the Church or the Parish Office:

1) Is your temperature over 100.4° F? 2) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you tested positive for COVID-19? 3) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you had direct contact with a person

confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19? 4) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you been asked to self-quarantine? 5) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you had any cold or flu-like

symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat, body aches, or lack of taste or smell?

6) Within the last fourteen (14 days, are you aware of being in contact with someone with cold or flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat, body aches, or lack of taste or smell?

7) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you travelled to a place with rising community transmission of COVID-19?

8) Within the last fourteen (14) days, have you travelled on an airplane?

Pathways 2020-2021 (Adult discipleship formation, sponsored

by the Diocese of Greensburg)

Held at St. John the Baptist Church, Scottdale

There are different paths a Christian disciple

can take in the search to “understand our own

identity.” We must “set out on a journey.”

- Pope Francis

Adult Catholic laity are called to fulfill a critical role in an ever changing world where they bear the primary responsibility for evangelization. Pathways represents the Diocese of Greensburg's long-standing commitment to adult faith formation and nurturing mature discipleship. To this end, Pathways participants are invited to explore what it means to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in our own historical time and place; to know the faith, to make it our own, and to share it with others.

Pathways involves twelve evening sessions, three workshops and a closing retreat. The topics are listed in

Pathways Brochure 2020-2021. The workshops address the many callings, different gifts, and roles disciples are called to place in service to the mission of Christ and his Church. The closing retreat offers participants the opportunity to gather together a final time and reflect upon their Pathways experience, their identity as Christian disciples and how they will continue to grow in their relationship with Jesus and be witnesses to the risen Lord.

The Pathways Certificate of Completion is awarded to a participant who has attended all 12 sessions, three workshops, the retreat and paid the course fee in full by the due date of the year of registration. From the year of registration, participants have four years to complete the program without any additional cost. Certificates of Completion are awarded at the retreat. A Pathways Certificate of Completion satisfies all requirements for the basic and permanent certification of diocesan catechists.

Registration fee is $150 and includes materials for all sessions and workshops; financial assistance is available through the Francis Fund. Brochures are available in the Parish Office. For more information and to register, contact the Diocese of Greensburg Office for Faith, Family, and Discipleship by calling 724.552.2598 or emailing [email protected], or visit www.dioceseofgreensburg.org/pathways.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 19, 2020

Love Basket Food Drive July 25-26

The Love Basket is a non-profit, all volunteer emergency food assistance program for the people of Indiana County. They are not affiliated with any other agency and receive no government funding. They rely solely on the generosity of churches, schools, businesses and private

residents. Last Christmas they provided meals for over 1,300 people. As you know, the need for food in our county is particularly high at this time, especially as some programs are ending. Along with the 10-40 emergency requests that they normally fill monthly for families who are referred to us by churches and county agencies, they anticipate receiving additional appeals from those who are no longer covered by other programs. This would put a strain on the normal resources of the Love Basket to the extent that we will no longer be able to keep up with the requests they receive. The Love Basket is therefore coordinating a mid-year food collection to restock their shelves during the weekend of July 25-26, 2020. A project of this magnitude requires the support of many in the community. Church of the Good Shepherd will participate in this food drive—drop-off baskets will be in the Church Narthex for anyone who chooses to bring non-perishable food items. They are especially in need of canned fruits, vegetables, tuna and meats, peanut butter, and cereal. If you would prefer to participate by donating a monetary gift, please place it in the collection in an envelope marked “Love Basket” or write “Love Basket” in the memo field of your check. Thank you in advance if you are able to participate in this food drive—many throughout our county are grateful for your generosity at this time.

Please take note... If you have any suspicion about the sexual abuse (or any other type of abuse) of a minor child by anyone—please contact PA Childline immediately at 1.800.932.0313. If the alleged abuser is functioning in a parish, school or diocesan position as clergy, religious, paid staff or volunteer you are also requested to contact the Bishop’s Delegate for Matters of Sexual Misconduct after you have called the Childline number and made the report. The Bishop’s Delegate may be reached at 724.837.0901, Ext. 1221.
