    Term or Symbol Definition or Description

    Articulation The act of using the tongue to start and separate notes.

    Bar line separates the musical staff into measures

    Bass clef instrument in bass clef are the bassoon, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and timpani

    Breath mark indicates to take a breath.

    Common time same as 4/4 time.

    Eighth note gets one half beat of sound.

    Embouchure The formation of muscles around the mouth that produce the sound on our instrument.

    Flat sign lowers a note step.

    Half note gets two beats of sound

    Half rest gets two beats of silence.

    Ledger Lines Lines that extend the staff above or below.

    Measure The space between two bar lines.

    Musical Alphabet ABCDEFG the notes we use as our musical language. Characteristics: repeats itself, goesforwards and backwards, uses only A-G, alternates lines and spaces.

    Natural sign cancels a flat or a sharp.

    Quarter note gets one beat of sound.

    Rhythm The organization of the duration of the various sounds and silence of which music is made. Thegrouping of beats, subdividing of beats, etc., creates rhythm

    Tempo Speed of the music.

    Time Signature The top number tells us how many beats are in the measure. The bottom number tells us whatkind of note gets the beat.

    Treble clef instruments that play in the treble clef are flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn,trumpet, and mallet percussion

    Whole rest gets four beats of silence.

    Accent Tells us to emphasize the beginning of a note.

    Accidental Tells us to play the note differently than what is in the key signature.

    Crescendo Tells us to gradually get louder.

    D.C. al Coda Da Capo al Coda tells us to go back to the beginning of the music and play to the coda.

    D.C. al Fine Da Capo al Fine tells us to go back to the beginning of the music and play to the Fine.

    Other things to know and be able to do for your first semester exam:

    1. Describe the function of the two numbers found in a time signature, and apply it to a give musical question. Forexample, in the time signature found below, the top number, 6, means that there are six beats in a measure,and the bottom number, 8, and means that the eighth note gets the beat.

    2. Do some musical math; addition and subtraction problems using note values and time signatures. 3. Know your rhythm/rest tree.4. Be able to name notes for your instrument and know the fingering/position.5. Answer questions regarding the Winter Concert music. Ex. In ms. 28 the _____ has the melody? You will be
