For continuous heat flow over perforations or depressions inthe objects to be heated, the band heater can be fitted with heat conduction plates made of copper, aluminum or brass. For heat transfer, the band heater must be pressed against the object to be heated. The standard model of the bandheaters is not liquid-proof. Testing according to VDE 0720.

A shortened connection box located on a certain axial position is possible under observation of the technicalfeatures. The construction of the connection boxes, clamps and shutter fittings, perforations and bores in radial as wellas axial position is possible, depending on the requirement. The section of the heat protection housing in the area of theconnection boxes is insulated by the band heater on account of the electrical connections. For the purpose of access, the tightening clamps of the band heaters must be arranged on the side of the hinged or removable section of the heatprotection housing. The radial division of the heat protection housing can be arbitrary.
Ordering information“Heat protection casing with ... mm thick insulation” must be specified along with the concerned band heater data.
Execution in 3-phase connection is possible from a width of 97 mm onwards.
Construction characteristics
Heat Protection Housing (WSM)UseFor mika or ceramic high performance band heaters, to reduce heat radiation losses.
Heat Protection Housing with Insulation (WSMI)
Construction of connection boxes, clamps and shutter fittings, hinges, perforations and expansions is possible in radialas well as axial positions, depending on the requirement. The section of the insulated heat protection housing in thearea of the connection box is insulated by the band heater on account of the electrical connections. For the purpose ofaccess, the clamps of the band heaters must be arranged on the side of the hinged or removable section of the heatprotection housing with insulation jacket. The radial division of the insulated heat protection housing can be arbitrary.
Insulation jacket:10, 20 or 30 mm thick.
Instructions on construction
The heat protection housing with insulation jacket is assembled along with the actual band heater as one unit. Asubsequent fitting of band heaters with insulated heat protection housing is possible under certain conditions. The bandheaters can be removed for the purpose of replacement.
For band heaters, for further reduction of heat radiation losses and for limiting the heat protection housing surfacetemperature to about 65 °C (measured at the band heater with 30 mm insulation jacket and about 10 mm air column forcylinder temperature of 245 °C).

Cast Heaters, in Aluminium or Bronze
• Simple to fit• Available with cowls for maximum energy
Cast Aluminium and Cast Bronze heaters offer optimum heat transfer directly to the contact surface.
These heaters are usually custom designed in house using state of the art cad ware alongside many years experience to obtainmaximum heater life. Every shape and size can be manufactured in our modern patternshop and foundry, before being fullymachined in our machine shop prior to termination at final assembly. There are many terminations available from metric toAmerican threads, high temperature leads to high temperature plug and socket arrangements.
These units are designed and manufactured using the highest quality heavy walled alloy tubing for maximum thermal shockresistance. They are available with straight tube connection or threaded connectors. These units offer many advantages including:
They can be designed as heater only, water/oil cooled or air cooled. Insulated or un-insulated cowls are available in sheet steel orCast Aluminium.
Liquid cooled applications
• Heaters must be disconnected from supply before any maintenance is carried out.• Electrical connections should be periodically checked to prevent arcing which could damage the heater terminals• Heater clamping arrangements should be checked regularly and re-tightened when required.
• Water fittings must be free from leaks, threaded connectors are the most common way of ensuring this.• Heater must be seated correctly and securely clamped to the extruder barrel.• After initial warm up to operating temperature, the heaters should be isolated from the electricity supply and re-tightened tocompensate for thermal expansion.• All connections should be made with suitable high temperature wiring. Terminal enclosures can be provided up to IP65 for easeof wiring and operator safety. All units must be adequately earthed.
Air cooled applicationsOur experience has evolved from the very first finned heaters supplied to the extruder industry into complete insulated units whichcan also be supplied with top quality blowers ready to install straight onto the extruder barrel. The design offers the maximumsurface area for optimum cooling efficiency and minimum energy loss. Our design team have the capability to manufacturecomplete lines for renewal of existing air cooled lines or for the conversion of older water cooled extruders. Our facility allows us tomanufacture a wide range of sizes to suit the smallest extruder up to the largest. Cowls can be insulated or un-insulated inAluminium coated mild steel or Stainless Steel, they can also be supplied in Cast Aluminium or Cast Bronze for areas where amore robust unit is required.
Maintenance
Installation Recommendations• Surface to be heated must be clean from contamination, smooth and compatible to the machined surface of the heater.
• Maximum thermal conductivity• Uniform heating of contact surface• Fast, effective cooling control
• Excellent mechanical strength• Extremely reliable unit
