Sustainability – Bamboo Waste Usage
Ar. Mrinalini Sane Semester 2, M. Arch – Construction Management March 2014
Bamboo : sustainable construction material Bamboo - fast growing woody grass 2’ per day India - 14 commercially useful species Second largest producer in world 75% Indian sub-continent – a natural habitat for
bamboo Grows from sea level to over 3500 metres
height 4 species - commercially used in Maharashtra Harvested in 3 to 5 years; yield of 6-8 tons
/year/acre No replantation required; self-renews with root
system Rural employment – numerous possibilities Important agent for climate change mitigation Tubular section – low weight; fibres bundled
together Periodic nodes – strengthening rings Good alternative to steel (steel has greater
embodied energy v/s bamboo) Light weight, flexible – good for prefab
construction

Waste from bamboo
Nothing is wasted Every part of bamboo is used
for different purposes; as a result, there is practically NO WASTE created.
Also, bamboo waste – when created, is BIODEGRADABLE
Waste shavings, pieces are used as fodder, converting it to MILK!
Or, used as FUEL.
