questions to evaluate knowledge at different points during the program.

There are two Levels to the program: one level is for Junior members and the second level is for Intermediate and Senior members. Members will be automatically taken to the appropriate Level according to the birthdate entered on the registration screen The program takes about 45-75 minutes to complete, depending on which level is being completed. When members register for the program, they will be provided a unique Passcode. Members should write their Passcode down and keep it in a safe place! If a member needs to stop the AH&QA training in the middle of the program, he or she may resume the program where they left off by entering their Passcode on Welcome screen of the program. ALL new members and members completing the Online AH&QA program prior to 2017 must register to receive a NEW PASSCODE. Passcodes from 2016 should still be active for members.

A member must be LOGGED IN for the system to track their progress and record their completion of the program. There is a note at the top of the screen indicating the member’s status. When logged in, the message will read “Logged in: [Member’s Name]“. If the member is not logged in correctly, the message will not identify them by name it will identify them as a “Guest“. Progress will NOT be recorded as a “Guest”.

Upon completion of the program, members will have an opportunity to print a Certificate of Completion for their records. It is suggested that members keep the Certificate of Completion with their animal health papers, registration papers, and other animal records. Each member’s progress will be kept in a statewide database and their County 4-H staff will receive notification that they have completed the AH&QA training.

Quality Assurance4-H and FFA On-Line Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance (AH&QA) Program Now Open for 2017

For 2017, members will have access to the AH&QA program from March 15th through July 1st. Members MUST complete the AH&QA training no later than July 1st.

4-H’ers are required to complete the on-line training program when they reach each 4-H age division (Juniors (ages 8-10), Intermediates (ages 11-13), Seniors (ages 14-18) – all as of January 1 of the current year OR when as Intermediate and Senior 4-H members, they choose to show a new species since last completing the program within their age division.

Hort Corner How to Identify Poison IvyBy Alexa McCullen, University of Maryland Extension Horticulture Agent Associate/Master Gardener Coordinator

It’s the time of year for backyard cookouts, evenings on the patio, and games on the lawn! Warm weather is upon us and it is time to get our yards ready for the outdoor activities of summer. As you are making your rounds among the growing weeds, be on the lookout for the poison ivy that can be lurking!

Poison ivy is usually found in the areas of our yards where the sunny lawns or flower beds meet the edge of wooded areas. It can appear as a groundcover, vine, or even a small shrub. As a vine, it can often climb trees and create hairy roots that attach it to the trunk. The leaves of poison ivy are in sets of three, typically with the lower leaves are side by side and the third leaf protruding on a longer petiole past the lower leaves.

These leaves could have smooth, serrated, or lobed edges.

All parts of poison ivy contain the urushiol oil, which causes the skin irritation associated with contact with poison ivy. When working with poison ivy, it is advised to wear long pants, long sleeves, and protective gloves. Remove clothing by turning the clothes inside out as you remove them. Wash clothing with hot water and detergent. If you skin comes in contact with any plant part or any object that has contacted the plant, be sure to wash skin within 10 minutes using dish soap or rubbing alcohol. If you begin having a reaction, treat with oral or topical antihistamines. Allow irritated skin to dry through exposure to air.

There are some plants that can raise our alarms that may not be poison ivy. Some common cases of mistaken identity

include Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and boxelder (Acer negundo). Virginia creeper has leaves in sets of five instead of three. Boxelder can be more difficult to distinguish, however, when you look at the stem of the plant, the leaves of boxelder are oppositely arranged, or have two sets coming from the same point in the stem. Poison ivy has leaves that are alternately arranged, or have only one set of leaves coming from each point on the stem.

If you ever have questions about poison ivy identification or the identification of any other plants in your yard, you can always submit photos or a physical sample to the University of Maryland Extension Baltimore County office or to the Home and Garden Information Center via the Ask an Expert link on their website at https://extension.umd.edu/hgic .

BALTIMORE COUNTY OFFICE

COCKEYSVILLE, MD 21030

The plan is to raise $5,000 half going to the Baltimore County 4-H Fair and the other half going to the 4-H Office. Whichever club raises the most money by July 1st will have the honor of shaving Mr. Dwayne’s beard, and we will all get to see him have his hair cut and donated to charity

at the Baltimore County 4-H Fair.Your club can get sponsors, do fundraisers, ask family and friends or use any other creative way to raise money. Please make all checks out to BCEAC.If each club raised about $300 each, we would make the goal amount.
