Principal’s Message:
Yes, it’s December already! As you can see from the December calendar, there are a lot of activities to look forward to. This year the Christmas Concert will be led by our music teacher, Ms. Hallow, and will include performances from the grade 5 & 6 class and the grade 7 & 8 class, led by their teachers Mrs. Soutter and Mr. McLean. Our lovely Parent Advisory Council will host the traditional Christmas dinner at Balmoral Hall on December 20th, Day 1. Our Kindergarten students are in school that day so we’ll walk to the hall together and enjoy our dinner. The event is a wonderful way to end the school year.
Enjoy December and all of the festivities that go with the season. Happy Holidays everyone!
Sincerely,
Belinda McNaughton

In November, the kindergartens welcomed Lacey Blowers who shared her experiences in the military with the class. Thank you for your service Lacey. In math this month, we have been learning about different ways to represent numbers, and have learned about a new number each week. The students are learning to show numbers with pictures, objects, and tenframes. In Social Studies the kindergartens have been learning about the things that make us the same and the things that make us different. At the end of the month they wrote a class book about the different things that they like. The kindergartens were also excited to participate in Stack It Up with Mrs. Tervoort this month.

The Grade 1 class participated in numerous math activities for November Numbers! Each day the students listened to a Math story that highlighted a different Math concept. Then they had an opportunity to apply what they learned about the concept with some hands-on activities.
Kylie used oranges to solve number equations and was introduced to fractions.
Anna- Graphing Smarties Kaycie – Working on a Scrambled Square puzzle
Gabriella is exploring area with crackers to help figure out the size of things.
Grade 1 class – Check out the white board and all of the ways we came up with to make the number 11. (We came up with 16 different ways). Then we read the story, 12 Ways to Get to 11, to see if any of our equations were in the book!

The Grade 1 students had an opportunity to design and build a shelter as part of their Science unit. Their shelters had to be made using a variety of materials, it had to withstand a cold Manitoba winter, it needed to be visually appealing, and it had to involve all of the five senses so that their shelter would be more comfortable and cozy for their animals. After presenting their shelters to the class, the students also got to share their projects with the 2/3 and 3/4 class.

Over the month, the Grade 3/4 class has been doing a variety of daily activities in math
for November Numbers. One of the challenges that our class participated in was the
“2019 Game”. For this game, students were challenged to create number sentences from
1 to 30, using only the digits 0, 1, 2, and 9. They were allowed to use any operation and
could combine digits as necessary. In order to gain the most points possible, our class
tried to use each of the four digits exactly once for each number sentence. Our class got
every number sentence except for 13!
Do you know how to make 13?!
Everyone contributed to the challenge!

Christmas is a festive and happy time of year. It is a time for old friends to get together, and for families to celebrate their love and joy. For a large number of Canadians, they are not able to be with their family or friends during the holidays. The Canadian Soldiers give up time with their family and friends in order to help keep the peace around the world, and to help keep their fellow Canadians safe. The students of Balmoral realize the sacrifice these brave men and women are making. In order to let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice, and that we are thinking about them, the students have written letters and drawn pictures for the soldiers. Mrs. Soutter and the grade 5/6 class have been col-lecting pictures and letters from the rest of the students and will get them ready to send overseas. We hope that this gesture will help to brighten their Christmas and bring them some joy.
We have been busy jumping into November Numbers this month and have completed a lot of challenge and fun activities that have stretched our math muscles.
