Welcome

It is a privilege and honour to be the Principal of Baldivis Primary School and present the 2018

Annual School Report.

Our motto of ‘We Care’ encompasses our strong commitment to ensure every child receives the

best possible learning opportunities in a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment.

At Baldivis Primary School, ‘We Care’ about the intellectual, social, emotional and physical

development of each child. We have high aspirations for all children as they become active and

resilient citizens.

We are committed to building strong family and community partnerships and a sense of

belonging. Our school provides children and families with a unique country feel in the rapidly

growing suburb of Baldivis. We strive to combine our rural and environmental heritage with

contemporary schooling so all children are equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and

understandings to be successful today and into the future.

Our team of dedicated staff believe education should be enjoyable for every child and what we

do every minute of every day makes the difference. I believe Baldivis Primary School offers all

children the opportunity to feel successful, valued and cared for.

In 2018, we continued to strive towards achieving our 2020 Business Plan targets by setting clear objectives under our priority

areas of:

Excellence in Teaching and Learning

A Positive Climate for Learning

Strong Partnerships in Learning

Effective Leadership

Efficient Resource Management

Since joining Baldivis Primary School in late April 2018, I have witnessed the strong connection the school has with families and

the wider community. We are extremely fortunate to have a very passionate P&C who dedicate so much of their time to raising

funds for the students and holding special events to make school life even more enjoyable.

I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Ms O’Neill, Ms Schneider and Mrs Kelly who performed various school

administrative roles while the school transitioned to my permanent appointment.

It is with great pleasure that I present the 2018 Annual School Report. I hope that by reading it you gain an appreciation of the hard

work and strong commitment by the staff, students and families of Baldivis Primary School and the success we have achieved by

working together.

From the School Board

The Board of Baldivis Primary School is

one of the decision-making bodies

within our school that works with the

community to ensure that the school

resources are used effectively, and that

the school’s priorities reflect the needs

of the students. Our Board is made up of

staff, parents and community members.

We meet twice each term.

One aim of 2018 was to implement

School Board portfolios. This would mean that members of the

School Board would receive a portfolio and that would be their

area to oversee as an active member of the Board. Within the

School Board we have nine portfolios and they are: Community

Engagement; Curriculum – Arts, PE, Languages and HASS;

Curriculum – Literacy and Numeracy; Digital Technologies and

Science; Early Childhood; Finance; Grants; Grounds and

Wellbeing & Behaviour.

The introduction of the portfolios gave

the School Board members a focused

area to engage with. The new

operational structure has given the

School Board a better understanding on

how it can best impact the school, while

continuing to strive for the school to be

the best that the school can be. This year

alone we have seen members of the

School Board excel within their specific portfolios and have

already seen some good outcomes.

Another focus of the Board was to become more visible within the

school community. One of the ways that the School Board did this

was on the Open Night, where the Board had a display of photos

of all of its members and a little blurb on why they wanted to be

part of the School Board. In addition to the physical display the

School Board members went around to every class room and

offered School Board award stickers. This was seen to be a

positive initiative by the Board with many encouraging

comments coming from students, families and staff regarding the

awards.

The School Board spent time preparing a new initiative for the

school throughout the second half of the year. With the

understanding and the reality of knowing that many of the

students come to school without having breakfast, the School

Board decided that they would invest time to set up a school

breakfast program. The aim of this program is to give an

opportunity for students to come and have a healthy and

nutritious breakfast. While the program will not exclude anyone;

the hope is that the students who are not eating before school will

be able to attend and that this will help them concentrate

throughout the day, and get the best possible leaning out of the

day. With the School Board being successful in receiving a grant

from Millers Landing this program is scheduled to start early

Term 1 2019.

I see that the School Board is one of the many integral parts of

Baldivis Primary School and believe that the School Board will

continue to support the school moving forward as it has done in

the past. With the school motto being “We Care,” the School

Board is fully committed to living out this motto to show that we

care in all that we do and want to make the school community the

best that we can.

We are extremely lucky to have an amazing team at Baldivis

Primary School and on the School Board, and without all the

members it would not be what it is today. I count it an honour and

a privilege that I have been able to Chair the School Board for

2018 and I look forward to all of the wonderful things that the

Board will continue to do in the future.

Regards,

Ronald Stobie

Board Chair

show that we care in all that we do and want to make

the school community the best that we can.

The Arts is a highly valued area of the curriculum by the

community. 2018 saw the introduction of new initiatives

along with the development of initiatives that began in

2017 and will continue to be developed in 2019.

Throughout 2018 students at Baldivis Primary school

actively engaged in the Australian Arts Curriculum.

Students from Year One to Year Six attended two Arts

sessions each week delivered by specialist teachers,

Mrs Diana Triscari (Performing Arts) and Mrs Monique

Underwood (Visual Arts). The Arts lessons are

designated toward the development of skills, knowledge

and understandings of both Performing and Visual Arts.

Along with this, the aim of the Arts programme at Baldivis

Primary is to develop students’ creativity,

communication and cooperation skills along with

developing appreciation of the importance of the Arts

culturally and historically in our society.

2018 saw the beginning of a Visual Arts network within the Baldivis Cell focussing on monitoring standards to ensure all students

are receiving a current and relevant Arts programme. In 2018 the Visual Arts program included a new initiative by working with

professional street artist, Mel McVee. Through working with an artist in residence students were able to develop art design and

painting skills, an understanding of art in our community and help create a vibrant space within our school that has had a positive

reaction by all members of our school community.

This initiative has lead the Art programme to take the arts beyond the classroom in 2019. Two exciting new projects promoted by

the Rockingham Council will use resources and professional help beyond school and provide students the opportunity to display

their work in public areas. The first of these, also supported by Alcoa, is the Up-recycle sculpture where students will use repurposed

materials to create a large robot construction. The other promoting mental health with the theme, ‘Your vibe attracts your tribe’, is

the development of a mural with the winning primary and secondary mural to be painted on a business wall in the Rockingham

Council district.

The continuation of a Music network within the Baldivis Cell has led to a Sing Fest with Baldivis Gardens Primary School and the

development of our Baldivis Youth Band with students from Baldivis Primary and Tuart Rise Primary. These successful initiatives

have had a positive impact by giving participating students within the Baldivis cell an opportunity to develop performance skills

and cooperate with students from other schools.

Our Baldivis Youth Band continued to develop after commencing at the end of Term Three 2017. Mrs Triscari, together with Miss

McLoughlin from Tuart Rise Primary, established the band to give IMSS students and other musical students a purpose for leaning

their instruments. The concert band has proven to be a positive and successful initiative throughout 2018 with performances such as

an afternoon tea at Baldivis Primary School, a tour of primary schools in our area to showcase the band and encourage other students

to learn an instrument, performances at Baldivis Bunnings, Baldivis Community Fair and Baldivis Primary School’s Presentation

Assembly. The band also presented a very successful musical afternoon at the Baldivis Children’s Forest. The event was run in

conjunction with members of the Children’s Forest who helped advertise and prepare an afternoon tea for guests.

Due to the success of the band in 2018, ten of our original band members, who now attend high school, have chosen to remain in the

band offering our newer band members excellent role models and leadership. This peer mentoring is proving to be mutually

beneficial for our leaders and new students. We are all looking forward to seeing the students develop further and perform in 2019

including a performance at the WA Government Schools Concert. We plan to continue working with the Baldivis Children’s Forest

and other groups in our community to mutually benefit our band and the Baldivis community.

All students at Baldivis Primary had the opportunity to perform in

front of an audience through school assemblies and the Junior

Christmas Concert. Year Five and Six students had further

opportunities through joining our school choir with successful

performances at our ANZAC Day Ceremony, Harmony Day, a Sing

Fest with Baldivis Gardens PS, WAGSMS, The Baldivis Community

Fair, a whole school assembly and at our Year Six Graduation

Ceremony. Choir students were given the opportunity to develop

performance skills as singers, dancers, actors or musicians.

Students were also given opportunities to develop their skills at being a positive audience through watching incursions such as

Aboriginal dance and music group, Yirra Yaakin. Further music incursions are planned for 2019 to help develop students

understanding of the benefits of music in our society.

Through recognising the benefits of students cooperating to create music together a new initiative for 2019 is the development of a

‘Music Garden’ with the first pieces to be placed in front of the Arts based mural created in 2019. The music garden will allow

students to play, create and perform music outdoors with peers during recess breaks and during music lessons.

The Arts

The Arts lessons are designated

toward the development of skills,

knowledge and understandings of

both Performing and Visual Arts.

13

Physical Education at Baldivis Primary school engages all students from Pre Primary

to Year 6 in the Australian Curriculum. Varying ability levels and special needs are

catered for throughout the school with the aim to improve student’s health and

wellbeing along with promoting knowledge of all new skills and sports. This in turn

could lead to community involvement in sports outside the schooling environment.

Baldivis Primary School is part of the Baldivis Area Schools Sporting Association

(BASSA) with links to all the other schools within our cell network. BASSA cell members

meet twice a term to discuss carnivals, moderation, community involvement with

outside sporting organisations and curriculum. As a member of this cell our school

competes in a total of six interschool events across the year.

Throughout 2018 Baldivis PS competed in a wide variety of intraschool, interschool and

sate carnivals. Our events at Baldivis Primary School aim to include all students

regardless of ability and give a learning experience to all.

Last year we were able to run a school Colour Run in Term 1 and Jump Rope for Heart

in Term 4. These events promoted community involvement with many parents

assisting with the event and even joining in. These events also act as fundraising tools

providing funds to organisations such as The Heart Foundation. In 2018 due to our

schools fundraising ability over the years we are now a silver member for Jump Rope

for Heart which is a great achievement.

We organise school based events together with three intra school carnivals throughout the year. These include Swimming, Cross

Country and Athletics carnivals. These carnivals not only allow for students to succeed and challenge themselves but also aim to be

inclusive. At Baldivis we have a firm belief that all students should be granted the same opportunities in sporting events and as such

cater for this. Students who do excel at a high level can then be selected to represent the school at interschool events from our

BASSA area.

Baldivis Primary School had a very successful year in 2018 particularly winning the interschool Cross Country, Cricket and League

Tag carnivals. From this our students were able to compete in the state wide carnivals of these events with again our school achieving

some fantastic results.

Running Club has been a huge success in 2018

with students from all year levels welcome to

attend before school running sessions on our oval

every Tuesday and Thursday. Each session

averaged 50 students with the benefits

highlighted through improved fitness levels of

the students and social interaction amongst all

year levels. The comradery and encouragement

from student to student regardless of year level to improve and strive for their personal best was great to see. It was also pleasing

to see parents coming along and joining in with their children and running laps during sessions. As a school we have a goal to ‘Run

around Australia’ with a laps totalled at the end of each session. We run from the coast line of Western Australia and made it to

Queensland which was a huge effort. Hopefully 2019 we can run even further.

In 2019 we look to challenge our students once again and create new initiatives that will inspire. With continued support from the

school, community and outside organisation we will once again be able to run events for all in the new school year. Students will

continue to have their specialised physical education lessons and with school sporting grants from the government have the

opportunity to learn sporting skills from experts across the state. With this we aim to improve their ability but create learning

experiences that will assist in their day to day lives. We look forward to another year of fun and achievement at Baldivis Primary

school in 2019.
