Balanced Diet for seniors The nutritional needs of the body changes with time and so should be our diet plan. It is a fact that many people do not follow any strict diet or food routine and go for ready-to-eat meal or even a lot of junks foods which are actually harmful. But as you grow older the resistance power of the body to fight diseases goes down and it is at this juncture that you require a balanced diet which works as a preventive measure as well as medicine. Nutritional Requirements Of the Elderly or Seniors As we grow older the metabolism process of the body slows down normally and this can affect the body a lot. So it is essential to include foods that are rich in fibre. The fibre rich food items like raw green vegetables, oats, cereals should be included in the diet. it should be included during breakfast as they provide the necessary energy as well. it is essential to have fruits raw than to go for fruit juices as the former is a source of fibre for the body as well. Raw potatoes are suggested by doctors as a must in elderly person’s diet as they are full of enzymes and hyaluronic acid (HA). HA stops the breakdown of the elastin and collagen in the skin which also slows down the ageing process of the body. Dairy products form a part of the balanced diet for elderly people. these include yoghurt, cheese, milk but these should be in moderate amount that is three servings each day. It is often found that with age people tend to go vegetarian which is according to doctors is a wrong move. Have sufficient amount of meat and fish in the diet as they are rich in omega fatty acids. For a balanced diet keep one to two serving of meat like beef, chicken, lamb and fish or egg every day. They are also rich in protein. According to the report of the American Council On Exercise it has been proved that the thirst for water gradually declines with age. Hence make sure that the balanced diet includes good amount of water at least two litres per day. With less water the kidneys does not function properly and one can catch the problem of constipation.
