Islam Q&A

It is only sad, I can say, that de-spite knowledge explosion andawareness of Islam through Fri-day speeches, books, videos, lec-tures, websites etc. many Muslimsare still unaware of what consti-tutes something to be Islamic. How to look at a particular thingand then conclude whether it is Is-lamic or un-Islamic or simplyMuslim?

This post will clarify some mis-conceptions and make thingsclear, Inshaa’Allah.

Merriam Webster gives the fol-lowing definition for the suffix‘ic’:1. having the character or form of2. a. of or relating tob. related to, derived from, or-

containing3. in the manner of, like that of,characteristic of4. associated or dealing with5. characterized by, affected withSo when you say Islamic, it means

something related to Islam, con-nected to Islam, characteristic ofIslam or characterized by Islam’sbeliefs or teachings.

Sometimes we see people inmosques arguing about dress. When you are at a mosque wear-ing a shirt and if it is tucked in ora T-shirt or a suit with neck-tie,sometimes some kurta-clad Mus-lim stares at you and tells you:why are you not wearing an Is-lamic dress? Some ‘free’ advice isthrown at you: Next time, pleasedon’t come to mosque in this‘western style!’Hello, come on. What is happen-ing with we Muslims? Is wearing shirt not Islamic? Whotold you that everything western isanti-Islamic? Or do you have anyproof that only kurta-pyjama is Is-lamic?

What constitutes Islamic and whatnot? Some people are hopelesslyignorant about it!

Any dress that fulfills the Islamicetiquette of dressing has to be Is-lamic! It is as simple as it is.* Awrah: Covering the parts of thebody that must be covered: navelto knees in case of men. Every-thing except the hands and face incase of women.* Modest clothing: The dress mustnot be see-through. It must not betight-fitting.* Beauty: In order to look good, clothes must be neat and tidy. When wearing a T-shirt and atrack pant fulfills the above crite-ria, what is the problem in wear-ing that?

Some teachers and even parentssegregate education and knowl-edge: Islamic knowledge and non-Islamic knowledge. Or Religiousknowledge and ‘worldly knowl-edge’! DeeniTaleem and Dunyaw-iTaleem!! Religious education andsecular education!

Learning to read Qur’an is Is-

What is Islamic andwhat is not Islamic?

Islam Q&A

lamic. Learning Mathematics or science is not Is-lamic!! Muddled arguments, anyway!During a discussion on Islamic education, someonereacted to me saying: What, Physical Education?!Astaghfirullah, it’s about games and sports, and howcan that be Islamic?!!

Our brothers are masters in shooting fatwas!! Youdon’t know where to go and hit your head at suchannoying and disgusting attitude!

Did the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam evercompartmentalize knowledge? No, right?Did the Prophet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam notencourage archery in Masjid Nabawi? Did he everprohibit his companions from acquiring wrestlingskills in his masjid?

He used to supplicate: O Allah! I seek from You ben-eficial knowledge.O Allah! I seek refuge in You from a knowledge thatis of no use.

The matter is simple: Any purposeful education thatbrings benefit to the society will be Islamic. Whetherit is conquering space or learning to write A B C orAlif Baa Taa.

What the Qur’an tells us to do, is Islamic. What theQur’an tells us to refrain from, is Islamic. What theProphet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam did is Islamic.

If you assume or invent something and call it Is-lamic, you are either ignorant of Islamic teachings orhaving a biased approach to problems and situations. To be precise, you have not dyed yourself with theDye of Allah!

Also, there is a need to understand and differentiatebetween Islamic culture and Muslim culture. Someexamples will suffice, Inshaa’Allah.* During marriages in Asia, for example, Muslimsspend huge amount of money and adopt so manyceremonies that are not sanctioned in Islam but hascreeped into Muslim society through alien cultureand influence.

Now, if some Muslim follows the traditions and cus-toms of his village during his marriage, it will besaid that he has adopted Muslim culture. You cannotcall it as Islamic culture.

* Offering salah, that is, Praying without a skull cap

(called Toopi in Urdu) is acceptable to Islam. Ifsomebody insists on praying with the skull cap on,then he is only going by the societal culture, not Is-lamic culture.

* A country that adopts all the injunctions of Qur’anand Shariah in legislation only can be called as Is-lamic country. Just by Muslim population or goingby the Muslim name that you have kept for yourcountry, you cannot call it as an Islamic country. It isjust a Muslim country, that’s it. Most of the Muslimcountries say that their constitution abides by theShariah, but then they are choosy in applying certainIslamic laws and ignore certain Islamic laws. Howcan you call such a country as Islamic?

May Allah give us the Tawfeeq and the Hidayah tounderstand things in a better way.Aameen.JazakallaahuKhayra for reading this post.Sal-lal-laahu ‘Ala Muhammad, Sal-lal-laahu ‘Alaihi-waSallam.

Politics

I By Dr. Mohammad ManzoorAlam I

The Aap and its chief ArvindKejriwal continue to bean enigma wrapped in mystery. Nobody can reallyknow what are the implications of his announcing alist of corrupt politicians. On one hand his crusadeagainst official corruption is a great service as ourpublic life has become excruciatingly corrupt andany move that looks like helping us fight this men-ace is welcome. On the other his strategy to fight itcreates more problems than solving it.

His list includes leaders from the Congress Party,BJP, BSP, NCP, DMK, SP, NC and YSRC. The peo-ple in Kejriwal’s dock are: P. Chidambaram, Veerap-paMoily, Pawan Kumar Bansal, KapilSibal, KamalNath, ShriprakashJaiswal, TarunGogoi, GK Vasanand Naveen Jindal. Rahul Gandhi has been added tothe list as an afterthought, not for any precise act ofcorruption, but for spending too much money onbuilding his own image.

In this honour list the BJP leaders included are: NitinGadkari, B S Yedurappa, Anurag Thakur and Naren-draModi, the last one for the same reason as RahulGandhi–spending too much on image building. TheBJP has hit back by saying that Kejriwal’s name, too, should be included in the list.

Nitin Gadkari has threatened to sue him, and FarooqAbdullah has said he would reply to the charge in acourt of law. Vasan has issued an ultimatum that ifKejriwal does not retract within a stipulated time he

will be dragged to court. And, we have not heard thelast on this issue.

The question to ask is whether this is the best way todeal with corruption. The clear answer is that corrup-tion cannot be eliminated by making allegations andcounter-allegations as in this case. A corruption-freesociety is built on institutions that ensure accounta-bility, integrity, transparency and rule of law. As longas these are missing from public life, corruption isgoing to remain very much among us.

From the experience of developed countries it isclear that a corruption-free society becomes viableonly after a country reaches a per capita GDP levelof about $6,000 a year. Below that level it is rare tofind a corruption-free society. That means such a so-ciety is still a few years away.

Countries that have achieved a high level of integrityin public life have done so only after a long struggle.Transparency, good governance, accountability andrule of law do not come as a result of sloganeeringand with allegations-counter allegations.

Long years of social, political and legal work go intomaking a fair, graft-free order. Kejriwalji’s ideashave a great potential for changing this country forthe better, but he needs patient work, not counter-productive short-cutsSource: http://www.iosworld.org/

Tread With Caution, Kejriwal ji

Once a group of 50 people was attending a seminar.Suddenly the speaker stopped and started giving eachone a balloon.

Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using amarker pen.

Then all the balloons were collected and put in anotherroom.

Now these delegates were left in that room and asked tofind the balloon which had their name written, within 5minutes.

Everyone was frantically searching for their name, col-liding with eachother, pushing around others and therewas utter chaos. At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own bal-loon.

Now each one was asked to randomaly select a balloonand give it to the person whose name was written on it.

Within minutes everyone had their own balloon. The speaker began--- This is exactly what's happening inour lives.

Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is.

Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people...Give them their happiness and you will get your ownhappiness.

In Depth

I By Mohammed Obaidullah I

Zakat is a distinct form of Is-lamic philanthropy guidedby Shariah-stipulated rules

of distribution. The rules clearlyidentify the poor and the needy asthe most deserving in the societyto whom zakat funds should flow.Further, the magnitude and inten-sity of poverty, accordingly toscholars, should have a direct re-lationship with the assistance tobe provided through zakat. Notethat traditionally Islamic scholarshave permitted zakat flow into thehands of individuals with rela-tively higher standard of living ascompared to the ultra-poor oftoday. Therefore, the issue islargely not a matter of permissi-bility but of efficiency in distribu-tion of zakat to the poor.

The fact remains however, thatthere is a need to objectively andaccurately measure poverty. Therehas been considerable researchinto the question of how best tomeasure poverty. The most recentresearch in this regard has beenundertaken under the OxfordPoverty and Human DevelopmentInitiative (OPHI) by Sabina Alkireand James Foster. The duo havecreated a new method for measur-ing multidimensional poverty. TheAlkire-Foster method identifieswho is poor by considering the in-tensity of deprivations they suffer, and includes an aggregationmethod. The method is flexibleand can be applied to measurepoverty or wellbeing, target serv-ices or conditional cash transfersand for monitoring and evalua-tion.

Another interesting area of re-search into the type of interven-

tion that performs best in terms ofimpact on poverty involves acomparison between targetedservices or conditional cash trans-fers and unconditional cash trans-fers. While many of the largestand best known cash transferschemes attach conditions to themoney beneficiaries receive (e.g.cash is paid on the condition thatchildren go to school and get vac-cinated), some recent experimentshave experimented with uncondi-tional cash transfers. The one thathas caught the attention of thepolicy makers is “GiveDirectly”, aCalifornia-based NPO that usesmobile money technology totransfer cash directly from donorsto some of East Africa’s poorestpeople. In an MIT study to evalu-ate the impact of UCTs,Haushofery and Shapiro (2013)found that recipients spent thecash on things such as food andhealthcare, to replace thatchedroofs with metal ones, buy live-stock and invest in small busi-nesses. It also found evidence tosuggest the money reducedhunger and increased psychologi-cal wellbeing. It debunked thefundamental assumptions underly-ing conditional giving that thepoor would waste the moneygiven to them.

If this recent evidence is juxta-posed against the views of earlyand contemporary scholars, onefinds an interesting match be-tween the early Islamic scholar-ship and the most recent evidenceavailable in conventional domain.Early scholars were inclined to in-sist on the unconditional nature ofzakah payment (whether cash orkind) emphasizing the conditionof “tamleek” or imparting owner-

ship of the zakah contribution tothe beneficiary. As the new ownerof the contribution, the benefici-ary would have every right to de-termine how the money or assetwould be used. Recent Islamicscholars however, seemed to favorthe channeling of zakah into de-velopmental projects in education, healthcare at a societal level relax-ing the strict interpretation of“tamleek”. For example, a con-temporary Islamic economistShawki Ismail Shehata in a popu-lar article published in IslamicEconomic Studies (vol.1, No.2),journal of the Islamic Researchand Training Institute (IRTI)writes “zakah may be given to in-stitutional bodies, taking care ofthe poor and the needy, in provid-ing the public utilities and serv-ices…any money spent on theeducation and medical treatmentof the poor is deemed to havebeen spent on them and paid tothem. Further, zakah may be paidin cash or in kind. Payment inkind includes the money spent forprocuring tools and equipmentand the like.” In another workpublished by IRTI, noted Islamiceconomist Seif el-Din Tag el-Dindwells extensively on the conceptof “tamleek”. Highlighting thelimitations of physical capitalgoods transfer, he recommendsthe equities transfer alternative asa way to make the poor participatein and benefit from mega develop-mental projects.

Given the clear evidence in favorof unconditional cash transferover other forms of giving, will itlead to a change in the thinking ofour Islamic economists? Or shallwe say, the wheel has come fullcircle? [http://www.sadaqa.in]

SHOULD ZAKAT BE DISTRIBUTED AS UNCONDITIONAL CASHTRANSFERS (UCTS)?

Spititual

Sister Rehab el Buri passed away on Sunday6th of March 2011 at the age of 26. She dieddue to cancer after fighting a courageous bat-

tle against it. A section is pasted below from her blogto reflect upon and is really worth the two minuteread:It took me about three days to accept my death. Onthe first day, as you read, my mind was in chaos. Onthe second day, I was numb. And on the third day,my husband and mother began talking sense to me,and I finally came to some important realizations:

1. We are all going to die. The people who took thenews of my disease calmly and those who panicked-they are going to die one day too. Death is one of thefew realities we can be certain of in this life, and yetwe somehow slip into thinking that we are exempt.

2. We live this life for the next. I was living my lifeas a Muslim...praying and fasting, but I had some-how allowed my real goal in life to be swallowed bybuying salad plates for my next dinner party, and try-ing to get free shipping on my next jcrew order, andfinding pillows that popped against my cream sofa.In between being a consumer and entertaining my-self to death, I let what really matters in my life slipaway from me. If I was truly living my life for theHereafter, I should not be so fearful of the future Ihad created for myself. The Quran says, "And thislife of the world is nothing but a sport and a play;and as for the next abode, that most surely is the life-if only they knew!" [29.64]

3. I am in the same boat as everyone else. None of usare given any guarantees in life. Our health, ourwealth, and our families are trusts give to us byAllah- and they are His to take when He, in his infi-nite wisdom, deems fit. We all claim to believe this, but in practice we often falter. I don't know why Ithought I could push the thought of death out of mymind for at least a good 30 or 40 years. Allah Ta'alacould claim any of us at any time. I am in the sameboat as everyone else- I have no idea when my timeis, but I should try to live everyday as if it is my last.

4. Each day is a gift. Receiving this wake up call issuch a blessing in that each day Allah grants me is anopportunity to do some more good and try to makeup for some of the mistakes I made in the past. Forsome reason, the mornings are usually a little roughfor me. I think it's just waking up from my dreamsand realizing that I still have to live with this disease. But every morning I try to tell myself, "Alham-dulilah, I feel good today, what good can I dotoday?"

These realizations, and the support of my mother, husband, his mother, my sisters, his sisters, my fa-ther, his father, my friends, and my community havehelped me not merely cope with what I'm goingthrough, but actually seek the reward of goingthrough this trial, and try to sincerely accept whatAllah wills for me.Source : Idealmuslimah.com

Brother – lower your gaze

The story of a young man who had ahabit of looking at women .

This young man asked Sheik : I feel guilty about myself for a bad habit, i am unable to get rid off ! I can’t stop myself from looking at girls in the market, what should I do?

Sheikh gave him a glass full of milk which was filled upto its edges and asked one of his student toaccompany him to the market. He told his student to beat him infront of everyone if he spilled even adrop of milk. Ofcourse the young man managedto walk without spilling a drop of milk and returned to the sheikh.

Sheikh asked : How many girls did usee on your way ??

The young man replied: I didn’t see anyone around me as myconcentration was only on the glass of milk because i was scared of getting beaten up in front ofeveryone if i spill milk.

Sheikh replied: The same is the case with a true Momin/Muslim.The true believer is afraid of ALLAH and shame on the day of resurrection if he commits a sin…These believers protect themselves from committing sin as they are always focused on the judgement day !!

Allah says in the Holy Quran:"tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things)."

In DEPTH

Ihave strong reason to believethat the recent judgment of SCpertaining to the adoption case

for Muslims has completely ig-nored and failed to understand thestand of Islamic law. Such con-fused judgment will surely affectdirectly or indirectly the IslamicPersonal Law which is a matter ofserious concern.

The case of adoption andguardianship is very clear underIslamic law. Adoption is a differ-ent thing and considering or ac-cepting a non-biological father, mother, son or daughter to be a bi-ological ones or granting its statusis completely a different thing.I am unable to comprehend that asto why the honourable judge ofthe Supreme Court completelyfailed to understand this stark dif-ference even when the stand of Is-lamic law was very clear andthere is not an iota of ambiguity inthis respect.

If a person wants to have a perma-nent care of a child or become his/her guardian, nothing is there tostop him to undertake such re-sponsibility, rather such act ofkindness will be appreciated butconsidering non- biological per-son to be a biological one orgranting them the same status asthat of a biological person is ut-terly illogical and legally unjusti-fied to say the least.

Nobody is preventing suchguardians to gift their property orwealth to anybody else let alonean adopted child. If somebodysays that somebody is my fatherand the person concerned accepts

it whereas thebiological fa-ther is a differ-ent person, will the pres-ent law acceptboth as fa-thers? If not, then why so isthe case here?

The concept ofwilayat is alsothere under Is-lamic jurispru-dence whichspecificallyneeds to be un-derstood inthis context.(Khalid Wa-heed Falahi’sreaction to thenews “Personal law can't stopMuslims from adopting children:Supreme Court” published onNDTV website)Khalid Waheed Falahi is a PhDfrom AMU, belongs to Sheikh-pura (Bihar) and works in Hyder-abad for a research firm.

Mr. Y.H. Muchhala’s note on SCJudgment on AdoptionBy IOS World<[email protected]>

New Delhi, Feb. 21: Mr. YusufHatim Muchhala, an eminent legalmind of the country, has classifiedthe implications of the SupremeCourt judgment of February re-garding adoption of children byMuslim couples.

The Mumbai-based lawyer has re-leased the following terse note on

the judgment that clarifies manymisgivings about it.

1. All India Muslim Personal LawBoard contention that Right toadopt and of a child to be adoptedcannot be declared as a Funda-mental Right has been acceptedby the Hon’ble Supreme Courtwith due respect and considera-tion to the fact that conflicting be-liefs and practices are prevailingin the country on this issue at thisstage. The Hon’ble SupremeCourt has unequivocally observedthat the faith / tradition based lawmust be respected and cannot besteamrolled by enacting UniformCivil Code at this stage. The at-tempt of the Petitioner (Mrs.Shabnam Hashmi) to elevate theright to adopt and the right of achild to be adopted at the level ofFundamental Right has failed.

In DEPTH

Had the Petitioner succeeded, anyprinciple of law which is contraryto Fundamental Right would havebecome null and void.

2. Principles of personal lawwould always continue to governany person who chooses to sosubmit himself to it and that the JJAct, 2000 does not mandate anycompulsive action by anyprospective parent leaving suchperson with the liberty of access-ing the provisions of the Act, if heso desires on to follow his ownpersonal law. The Supreme Courtin other words has given freedomof choice to select between per-sonal law and statutory law to theconcerned party.

3. The Hon’ble Supreme Courthas referred to Special MarriageAct, 1954 which has given suchfreedom of choice to every citizeneither to marry as per the provi-sions of the Act or in accordancewith the personal laws of the par-ties. Such optional civil code hasbeen in existence since 1954. TheJuvenile Justice Act, 2000 is an-other piece of legislation in the di-rection on the question ofproviding protection to and up-bringing of neglected, destitute orsurrendered children. These twoActs have never ever been chal-lenged by the All India MuslimPersonal Law Board.

4. However, the Court has notgiven any directions to the ChildWelfare Committee as requestedby the All India Muslim PersonalLaw Board to the effect that be-fore a child is certified to be freefor adoption, the Child WelfareCommittee in respect of a Muslimchild or parents should explore thepossibilities of providing protec-tion and upbringing of such achild as per principles of Kafala.

AFREED ISLAM, A CLASS X STUDENTFROM GUWAHATI'S LITTLE FLOWERSCHOOL INVENTS COMPUTER SYS-TEM REVO BOOK

GUWAHATI: In a move that can transform traditional computingdevices, schoolboy Afreed Islam has successfully designed avirus-protected microchip-run computer system. The Class X stu-dent from Guwahati's Little Flower School launched the ReVoBOOK, an ultra-slim computer system designed by him, on Mon-day.

If Afreed got enough financial assistance to supply the product tomarkets, he would taste greater success, said Siddharth Deb Nath,a scientist at Assam Science Technology and Environment Coun-cil.

The ReVo BOOK is embedded with a microchip and a hybrid op-erating system, also Afreed's brainchild, named ReVo IX. The de-sign of the computer system has been developed by a Germanbased firm which took up the project after knowing aboutAfreed's innovation. He has already applied for a patent for theReVo BOOK and is expecting to secure his rights soon.

"Most computing devices use mechanical hard disk drives, flashmemories and electronic disks to boot up operating systems, butmy invention replaces both mechanical and electronic hard diskswith a microchip, doubling speed and storage capacity," he said.

At a time when most of his peers are aiming to do well in theirboard exams, Afreed is planning to promote the ReVo BOOKwhich, he claims, will dominate comparable products in the com-puter market. "Compared to the hard disks available, my mi-crochip is four times faster, lasts longer and there is also nochance of losing data. Minimum power is required to run theReVo BOOK and its portable size is a bonus," he said.

Afreed is hopeful the ReVo BOOK will make help high-speed,uninterrupted performance. "Apart from domestic computing, theReVo BOOK will be immensely beneficial in offices, banks, aca-demic institutions and industries," the boy said.

"Three years ago, when I was in class VII, I started to look for asolution to some of the problems faced by the operating systemsused currently. I never imagined inventing an operating system,"Afreed said.http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/guwahati/Guwahati-teen-scripts-ReVo-lution/articleshow/30585775.cms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRO8OKAgTPE

2. Seeking forgiveness and re-pentance"I said (to them): 'Ask forgivenessfrom your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; (10) 'He will send rainto you in abundance; (11) 'Andgive you increase in wealth andchildren, and bestow on you gar-dens and bestow on you rivers.'

"[Surah Nooh, Verses 10-12] "And O my people! Ask forgive-ness of your Lord and then repentto Him, He will send you (fromthe sky) abundant rain, and addstrength to your strength, so donot turn away as Mujrimûn (crim-inals, disbelievers in the Onenessof Allâh)."[Surah Hood, Verse 52]And (commanding you): "Seekthe forgiveness of your Lord, andturn to Him in repentance, that Hemay grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestowHis abounding Grace to everyowner of grace (i.e. the one whohelps and serves needy and de-serving, physically and with hiswealth, and even with goodwords). But if you turn away, thenI fear for you the torment of aGreat Day (i.e. the Day of Resur-rection). [Surah Hood, Verse 3]

3. Tawakkul‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattab Radhiyal-lahu Anhu reported that Prophet(Peace be upon him) said,"If youwere to put trust in Allah(Tawakkul) the way that Allah de-serves, then you would be pro-vided for as birds are; they leave(in search of food) at the begin-

ning of the day famished, and re-turn at the end of the day full"[Shaykah Al-Abani’s Silsilat Al-Sahihah, # 310]And He will provide him from(sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust inAllâh, then He will suffice him.Verily, Allâh will accomplish hispurpose. Indeed Allâh has set ameasure for all things.[Surah Al-Talaaq, Verse 2-3]Would that they were contentedwith what Allâh and His Messen-ger (peace be upon him) gavethem and had said: "Allâh is Suf-ficient for us. Allâh will give us ofHis Bounty, and so will His Mes-senger (from alms, etc.). We im-plore Allâh (to enrich us)." [SurahAl-Tawba, Verse 59]

4. Constantly worshiping AllahTa'alaAbu Hurayrah Radhiyallahu Anhustated that the Prophet (peace beupon him) said,"Allah says, ‘Oson of Adam! Take time out toconstantly worship me, I will fillyour chest with richness , and re-move your poverty. And if you donot do so. I will make your handsfilled with occupation, and will

Take the timeout to constantly worship Me, Iwill fill your chest with richness!O Son of Adam! Do not distanceyourself from Me, or I will fillyour chest with poverty, and fillyour hands with work ”[ShaykahAl-Albani’s Silsilat Al-Sahihah, #1359]

5.Thanking Allah Ta'ala

And (remember) when your Lordproclaimed: "If you give thanks(by accepting Faith and worship-ing none but Allâh), I will giveyou more (of My Blessings), butif you are thankless (i.e. disbeliev-ers), verily! My Punishment is in-deed severe." [Surah Ibrahim,Verse 7]

6. Frequently performing Hajjand ‘Umrah

It has been reported by AbdullahIbn Mas’ud Radhiyallahu Anhuthat the Prophet of Allah (Peacebe upon him) said:"Follow up be-tween Hajj and ‘Umrah (i.e. con-tinuously repeat the performanceof Hajj and ‘Umrah) because theyboth eliminate poverty and sinsjust like a furnace eliminates thedirty impurities of iron, gold andsilver. And an accepted Hajj hasno reward less than paradise"[Shaykh Al-Albani in SahihSunan Al-Tirmidhi (1/245)]

8. Spending in the Way of AllahTa'ala

Say: "Truly, my Lord enlarges theprovision for whom He wills ofHis slaves, and (also) restricts (it)for him, and whatsoever youspend of anything (in Allâh'sCause), He will replace it. And Heis the Best of providers."[SurahSaba, Verse 39]

Abu Hurayrah Radhiyallahu Anhusaid that the Prophet (Peace beupon him) said:“ Allah has said:‘O Son of Adam! Spend I willspend on you!”[Sahih Muslim(2/690)]The Prophet (Peace be upon him)said:“There is not a single day inwhich a servant wakes that twoangels come down (from theHeavens). One of them says, O’Allah! Give to the one that spendsa substitute (for what he hasspent). And the other one says, ‘OAllah! Give to the one that with-hold some (his money) destruc-

tion!”[Al-Bukhari #1442]The Prophet (Peace be upon him)said,“While a person was in anopen area of land, he heard voicein a cloud above him say. "waterthe garden of so-and-so!" So thecloud immediately departed, andstarted pouring its rain out on arocky plain. A large crevice in therocks collected all of this water. So the man followed the water (inits course), and he found a manstanding in his garden, using aninstrument to direct this water indifferent directions *(to irrigatehis garden). He said to him, ‘Oservant of Allah! What is yourname?’ The man said ‘So-an-so,’the same name that he had heardin the clouds! Then the man askedhim, ‘O servant of Allah! Why areyou asking me my name?’ So heresponded. ‘I heard a voice in theclouds- the same clouds that thiswater came from- saying, “waterthe garden of so-and-so” withyour name. What do you interpretthis as (i.e. why do you think thishappened )?’ So he said, ‘If yousay this (i.e. if what you say oc-curred), then (the reason for this isthat) I see what (crops) come outof it (this garden), and I give onethird in charity, and I eat with myfamily one third of it, and I returnone third of it (to cultivate morecrops)”” and in another narration,it is reported that he said, …and Igive one third of it to the poor, and the beggars, and the wayfar-ers.’ [Muslim (4/2288)]

9. Hijrah, Emigrating for thesake of Allah Ta'ala

He who emigrates (from hishome) in the Cause of Allâh, willfind on earth many dwellingplaces and plenty to live by. Andwhosoever leaves his home as anemigrant unto Allâh and His Mes-senger, and death overtakes him,his reward is then surely incum-

bent upon Allâh. And Allâh isEver Oft¬Forgiving, Most Merci-ful. [Surah Al-Nisa, Verse 100]

10. Marriage

And marry those among you whoare single (i.e. a man who has nowife and the woman who has nohusband) and (also marry) theSâlihûn (pious, fit and capableones) of your (male) slaves andmaid-servants (female slaves). Ifthey be poor, Allâh will enrichthem out of His Bounty. AndAllâh is All-Sufficent for Hiscreatures' needs, All-Knowing(about the state of the people).[Surah Al-Nur, Verse 32]

11.Supporting students of Is-lamic knowledge

Anas Ibn Malik RadhiyallahuAnhu said,"There were two broth-ers (that lived) at the time of theProphet (Peace be upon him). Oneof them would come to Prophet(Peace be upon him), whereas theother one would seek his suste-nance (by working). So the theone who used to seek his suste-nance complained to the Prophet(peace be upon him) about hisbrother. The Prophet (Peace beupon him) replied,‘It is possiblethat you are provided your rizqbecause of him’" [Shaykh Al-Al-bani agreed it to be authentic, Sa-heeh Sunan Al-Tirmidhi(2/274)]

12. Showing kindness to thePoor

The Prophet (Peace be upon him)said,"The only reason that you areaided in victory (against your ene-mies) and provided with sus-tainance due to your weak?"[Al-Bukahri (14/179)]

13. Being honest in ones deal-ings

The Prophet (Peace be upon him)said:"The two parties of a transac-tion have the right (to annul thecontract) as long as they don't sep-arate (from each other). So, if theywere truthful (to one another), andhonest in explaining (the defectsof an item), then they will beblessed in their transaction. But, ifthey lied, and hid (the defects ofan item) then the blessings of theirtransaction are destroyed" [Mus-lim, # 3836]

14.Making the Hereafter One’smain Concern

Once Zayd Bin Thabit was withMarwan, the leader of the City, when he went to visit 'Abd Al-Rahman Ibn 'Uthman Bin 'Affan,Abd Al-Rahman said, "Nothingcaused him to come here, at thishour except a question that hewants to ask." So he asked him(what the matter was). He replied,"He (meaning Marwan) asked usabout matters that we heard theProphet (Peace be upon Him)say". I heard the Prophet (peacebe upon him) say "Whoever putsthis world as his only (and pri-mary) goal, then Allah will dividehis affairs for him, and He willplace poverty before his eyes, andnothing will come to him of thisworld except that which was al-ready written (i.e. pre-destined)for him. But who-ever made theHereafter his goal, the Allah willgather his affairsfor him, and hewill place richnessin his heart, andthe world willcome to him con-quered and sub-missive"[Al-Albani SilsilaAs-Saheehah,#950 ]

15. Striving to achieve the goal(for sustainance)

He knows that there will be someamong you sick, others travelingthrough the land, seeking ofAllâh's Bounty; yet others fightingin Allâh's Cause. So recite asmuch of the Qur'ân as may beeasy (for you), and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and giveZakât, and lend to Allâh a goodlyloan, And whatever good yousend before you for yourselves,(i.e. Nawâfil non-obligatory actsof worship: prayers, charity, fast-ing, Hajj and 'Umrah), you willcertainly find it with Allâh, betterand greater in reward. And seekForgiveness of Allâh. Verily, Allâhis Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful[Surah Al-Muzammil, Verse 20]And We have appointed the nightand the day as two Ayât (signsetc.). Then, We have obliteratedthe sign of the night (with dark-ness) while We have made thesign of the day illuminating, thatyou may seek bounty from yourLord, and that you may know thenumber of the years and the reck-oning. I By Ghulam Muhammed I

The entire Indian commu-nity that Kejriwal is sup-posed to be representing as

far as corruption in governmentranks is concerned, was/is help-less in addressing the problem ofhow to make the Government ac-countable to their demands, espe-cially when colossal amounts ofpublic money were so ruthlesslysiphoned off without any fear ofreprisal from any law authority.Kejriwal first tried with AnnaHazare a dharna demanding JanLokpal bill. Entire political classquestioned the locus standi of Ke-jriwal and Anna to dictate a law, which is supposed to be the mo-nopoly of elected legislative bod-ies. Politicians openly asked thatinstead of disturbing peace on thestreets, the protestors should tryelectoral route and come into as-semblies and Parliament and thenform their own cherished laws. While Anna dithered given hisage, Kejriwal took the challengeand resolved to fight Delhi As-sembly elections. Public acrossthe board were so fed up with thecorrupt politicians, that Kejriwalautomatically received over-whelming response and unexpect-edly secured 28 seats in assemblyand later got to form the govern-ment.Kejriwal’s step by step progresstowards political empowerment toroot out corruption found a com-mon strain of sympathy in acrossthe board voters, regardless of allvote bank politics of caste-ism, re-ligion, class, regionalism, eco-nomic strata.

Here is a firsthand lesson forMuslims who are tired of protest-

ing for past 65 years beggingCongress to give them equal sta-tus as citizens of the nation, with-out any malicious discriminationon the ground of their religion.Sixty five years down the line, there is hardly any hope that thecriminals in political oligarchyhave any inclination to give evena minimum space for Muslims. We should have reached the pointof frustration --- the Kejriwal mo-ment of despair --- when weshould collectively try to comeforward as a united political forceto cleanse the criminal system. Wechoose all those communal candi-dates that are the kingpin of theovert and covert communal andanti-Muslim movement as our tar-get and see to it that they are notelected. This is most feasible andlegal way to defeat our enemiesthrough tactical and at times nega-tive voting to help cleanse the sys-tem of the corrupt as well ascommunal. Kejriwal is at the mo-ment not in a position to changeor expand his party’s agenda to in-clude communalism to its missionto root out corruption. We willhave to do this job ourselves, though with cooperation withother sympathizing politicalgroups. Muslim vote bank doeshave great leverage in a vast num-ber of constituencies, where evenwith give and take arrangements,Muslims can first see that theirenemies are not elected. Tocounter both Congress and BJP,we may join hands with otherclean and non-communal leader-ship to see that targeted candi-dates are not elected. They saythere are nine ways to skin a cat. When we cannot get our adver-saries on communal charges, wemay switch to corruption eradica-

tion mode to get the same results.

Like Kejriwal, let Muslim chose asmall area for intense mobiliza-tion of their voters. A success inthat small laboratory will givethem further courage to expandtheir area of operation. Muslimpolitical initiatives will be ruth-lessly opposed by the targetedgroups, just as Kejriwal is facingtoday. All political parties areganging on him and his party, asall of them are neck deep in cor-ruption. Muslim will have to beprepared for similar challenge.Better to be prepared for a politi-cal challenge than to die help-lessly in Gujarat andMuzaffarnagar.

Let social media be our communi-cation medium to congregate like-minded activists to proceed toform our strategy and tactics. There is no alternative for us ex-cept to stand on our own two feetand meet the challenge. Wewould be thankful to Kejriwal tohave shown a way out of a half acentury old logjam.<[email protected]>

1. Decision Making- Con-text Is Important

DevavratBhishma takes the vowof celibacy to help his father con-summate his marriage withSatyawatiYou need to keep changing yourdecisions as per the context of thesituation. Decision making is adynamic process. Make it rigid, and you set the storm for a Ma-habharata

2.Negotiations- Unpredictableoutcomes- Satyawati

King Shantunu fell in love withSatyavati and wants to marry her.Satyavati agrees but she puts up acondition“I will marry you but my childwill be the king of Hastinapur. Hewill be the air of the throne and hewill be the ruler.”But what is the outcome? Herchildren turn out to be vagabon-des, they die early without father-ing a child. Her family bloodline

is in a state of risk and her strat-egy has died an untimely death.Inference: This is what happens inlife. You plan so much, you makestrategies and plans but life isnothing but a chain of unpre-dictable outcomes. You are noth-ing but a puppet in the hands ofdestiny, so do not plan too much.

3.Experiments/ Curiosity: Waitfor the right time- Kunti

Kunti had a boon from sage Dur-vasa, that she could evoke anyGod, and she will get a child akinthe features of that particularchild. So she evoked the sun God,when she was not marriedResult: Karna is born, and Kuntihas to forsake her, fearing thenorms of the society. Karna had torender a despicable lifePremature experimentation canlead to dangerous outcomes andyou will remain guilty throughoutyour life.

4.Determination succeedsagainst all odds- Amba

The princess of KashiAmba wasabducted by Bhishma against herwishes. To redeem her honor, sherequested Bhishma to marry her. When Bhishma expressed his in-ability to do so, she took ansolemn oath to revenge her dis-grace by slaying “The Invincible”BhishmaHer determination is as strong as arock and she did become the rea-son of Bheesma’s death on the10th day of Kurukhshetra battle. She was reborn as Shikhandi –half woman/half man andBheesmawont fire a weapon to-wards a woman and Arjun utilizedthis weakness (Achilles heel ofBhishma)

5.Focus on the entire thing, Lis-ten before you act- Drona

In the battle of Kurukhetra, Dronais an unstoppable opponent. Hehas to be stopped or else the Pan-dava army will be ruthlessly mas-sacaredSo Pandavas announced thatBheema has killed Aswathama. They suppress the fact that

Bheema has actually killed an ele-phant whose name is the same asDrona’s only son. (Ashwathamahatha, itigaja…)Drona loses focusand listen with only half ear. Hedrops his weapons and as a resulthe is beheaded by Dhristyad-humna.Focus on the entire thing, do yourresearch and then act. Do not justlisten to sources and act, think anddo your own research no matterhow credible the sources are.Drona relied on the “credible”Yudhistira and ignored to researchon his own which cost him hislife.

6.Little Knowledge is Danger-ous thing- Abhimanyu

Only Arjun, Krishna and Dronaknew how to crack theChakravyuh- an invincible forma-tiondeadly enough to finish thewar in a dayAbhimanyu could only trace hisway into the Chakravyuh, butcouldn’t figure his way outBe careful while you practiceyour application of knowledge inreal life. Also, do not blindly trustyour resources, you never knowwhen they will fail.

7.Even the best need a mentor-Arjun

Arjuna is without any doubt thebest warrior in Mahabharata, onthe parallels of Bheesma andDrona. He has all kinds ofweapons which he had obtainedfrom Indra but nevertheless, heseeks a mentor – Krishna. He isnot overconfident, he is not stub-born, he is not a fool. He knowsthe value of proper guidance.8.You cannot have everything inLife- Duryodhan

Duryodhana is foolish and stub-born. He is hell bent on not giving

anything to Pandavas no matterwhat. His stubbornness costed him hisentire kingdom, 100 brothers andhis life. Had he given those 5 vil-lages to Pandavas, he would haveavoided all this but no, he chosedto be stubborn.Inference: You cannot have every-thing. Learn how to curb stub-bornness or else you riskeverything.

9.Lower your standards, Do notask for what you can’t manage-Draupadi

Draupadi had asked shiva to granther a husband with 14 noble qual-ities. Shiva warned her, that this isan impetuous impossibility, and ifher wish is granted, the conse-quences could be disastrous forher. Draupadi rejects and insultsKarna on account of his low caste. She is disrobed in the Kaurav as-sembly, with her esteemed hus-bands watching the show, helplessely. The Wheel Of Karma…Whateveryou do, comes back over to hauntyouDo not ask for things you can’thandle, lower your standards. Also, dont be besotted by yourbeauty and looks, for they arelikely to go against you.

10.Do what is right, even if itmeans going against your team

Yuyutsu is the only kaurava whoprotested against Draupadi’s dis-robing incident. When Yudhistiramade an offer to all the assembledpeople to change sides if theywanted to, Yuyutsu took his char-iot to the Pandava camp andswitched sidesAlways remember your Dharmaand stand up for what’s right.

11.Dedicate your Life for a

cause- Karna

Karna is an exceptional characterin Mahabharata. He was the eldestson of Kunti but due to unavoid-able circumstances, he grew up asa charioteers son. Karna is excep-tionally talented fellow, he is loyaland well built, intelligent andhandsome (all the qualities Drau-padi demanded from Shiva). Heknows Duryodhana is wrong buthe still takes his side and not hisbrothers. This is because it isDuryodhana who has given himidentity in the society and he is in-debted to his wicked friend forlife. He promises Kunti that hewill not kill any Pandava exceptArjun. Karna knows that kauravaswill lose but he fights to repayDuryodhana’s debt.A friend in need is a friend in-deed. In Life, you may not getwhat you deserve but neverthe-less, you got to dedicate your lifefor something. Dedicate every-thing, every single thing you haveand the world will remember youforever.

12.Teamwork succeeds when Induvidual effortsfail

Kauravas lacked team spirit from day one. No coor-dination at all, the Kaurava generals fought their in-dividual wars.

•Bheesma is fighting for his vow of protecting thethrone•Drona is indebted by his allegiance to the KuruKing•Shalya – Tricked by Duryodhana, he wanted tofight for Pandavas.•Karna – Fighting to prove his superiority over Ar-juna.•Aswathama – fighting to support his father Drona.Pandavas were the team with a mission. Everyoneadhered to Krishna’s strategies while as warriorsthey were in complete awe of Bhima and Arjuna. Most of them were close relatives – cousins, brother-in-laws, father-in-laws. More than that they all werepart of the decision-making process. It was their“common” war.The strength lies in team work and not in individualefforts.

13.You do not need the best man, you need the“Right man for the Right Job”

On the Kaurava’s side, nobody wanted the war ex-cept Duryodhana. The motive of the Kaurav army

was distributedBheesma – He won’t kill the Pandavas, they are hisgrandchildren

•Drona - He won’t kill Pandavas (his students)•Shalya – He was the maternal uncle of Pandavasand secretly helped them by acting as a spy. He alsodemotivated Karna in the battlefield.•Karna: Promised not to kill any Pandava except Ar-juna.•So as you see, Kauravas are nothing but a direction-less team of traitors. A team without any agenda, fighting cluelessly. No organization.Pandavas had a common goal but they intelligentlydivided the responsibilities. They had an agenda andthey picked the right man for the right job.

•Dhratsadyumna – Drona.•Shikhandi: Bhisma.•Satayaki – Bhurisrava.•Arjuna – Karna.•Bhima – Duryodhana and his brothers.•Sahadeva – Shakuni and his sons.•Nakula –Karna’s sons.•Support system – Virat, Drupad, Chedi, Magadh,Kasi, Matsya and Naga king.•Krishna – Crisis manager and advisor.

A great example of proper resource utilization. Theright team is made by selecting the right Individuals.Get the right man for the right job.<[email protected]>

I By Ram Puniyani I

In a recently televised inter-view the Vice-President of In-dian National Congress, Rahul

Gandhi (Jan 2014) raised thestorm when he said that someCongressmen might have been in-volved in 1984 Sikh Massacre andthat Narendra Modi has a blameto take for the Gujarat carnage of2002.There were multiple responses tothis interview. Already Arvind Ke-jriwal had promised to set up SITinto Anti Sikh violence of 1984even before elections. Now hisGovernment seems to be taking itup more seriously and it is likelythat a SIT will be formed to inves-tigate the Delhi tragedy. One cansay that it may be too late by nowas lot of valuable evidence mighthave been lost or destroyed. Stillwhatever of process of law can beretrieved, should be saved andjustice should be done to victimsof Delhi. It goes without sayingthat the justice should be done tothe victims of communal violenceirrespective of the fact as to which

religious community they belongto. The Kashmiri Pundits alsoneed to be given required justiceand rehabilitation even today. Thetendency to flaunt Kashmiri pun-dits or anti Sikh massacre, afterevery talk of justice to violencevictims of Gujarat or any otherplace is an attempt to deflect theattention from issue on hand.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.Violence against one religiouscommunity can’t give justice toanother religious communitywhich has been wronged. On thesame level to turn a blind eye tothe atrocities on Muslim minori-ties in India because Hindus arebeing persecuted in Pakistan orBangla Desh is totally inhumanand vice versa. Justice should bedemanded for all religious minori-ties, in all the countries, all thetime. Tolerating injustice at oneplace is like tolerating injusticeeverywhere.

In response to Rahul Gandhi’scomments on Gujarat, the BJPspokespersons lashed out that

Modi has been given clean chit bySIT in Gujarat and also by thecourt of law, by legal process. This is a false propaganda. Rightfrom the beginning of Gujarat vio-lence, the comments of NationalHuman rights commission indictModi for his role in orchestratingGujarat Violence. Though SpecialInvestigation team (SIT) com-mented that there is no caseagainst Modi, in the findings ofSIT, there has been a strong ele-ment which indicts Modi for hisacts of commission and omission. The apologists of Modi will pointthat in Delhi the military was notcalled for three days, while forget-ting that in Delhi violence wascontained in three days and in Gu-jarat process of violence went onunabated till May 2002, startingfrom 27th February. This stoppageof violence in Gujarat could hap-pen only when the then PrimeMinister Atal Bihari Vajpayee sentK.P.S. Gill as the special officer tooverlook the control of violence inGujarat. Modi personally got ad-verse comments all through, rightfrom the beginning as his role was

too glaring to be undermined at any stage of time.

In the initial period the Hon’ble Supreme Court firstpulled up the State government and observed “TheNero’s in Gujarat fiddled as Gujarat burned”(http://teestasetalvad.blogspot.in/2013/12/we-will-soldier-on-zakia-jafri-case.html). Even Atal BihariVajpayee had to reprimand Modi that Raj Dharmashould be followed. The type of atmosphere createdin Gujarat resulted in Supreme Court asking forshifting of the two major cases away from Gujarat,as an intimidating atmosphere was created in Gujaratdue to Modi’s high handedness. Even after the latestjudgment of the Magistrate’s Court, the humanrights’ activists Mallika Sarabhai was forthright tocomment, “Sillyto have ex-pected anythingelse but cleanchit for Naren-dra Modi from aGujarat court.”

Even the inter-pretation of thereport of SIT isfallacious.Supreme Courthad appointedthe SIT and alsoAmicus curiae,Raju Ramchan-dran. To say thatSIT gave a cleanchit to Modi isnot true. Thefact is that theSIT in its 2010report clearlysaid: In spite ofthe fact thatghastly and violent attacks had taken place on Mus-lims at Gulberg Society and elsewhere, the reactionof the government was not the type that would havebeen expected by anyone. The chief minister hadtried to water down the seriousness of the situation atGulberg Society, Naroda Patiya and other places bysaying that every action has an equal and oppositereaction. Ramu Ramchandran based on same reportpointed out that there is enough evidence in the SITreport to prosecute Modi.

One recalls that NHRC much before all this had con-

cluded its report 31.5. 2002 and said that “there wasa comprehensive failure of the State to protect theConstitutional rights of the people of Gujarat” Ami-cus Curiae in his final report, recommended theprosecution of Narendra Modi under Sections 166and 153a and 153b of the Indian Penal Code. Sowhere is the clean chit? If we see three major factors,The National Human Rights commission has in-dicted Modi. Second, based on SIT observationsSupreme Court appointed Amicus Curiae holds thatModi can be prosecuted. Third, the process of justicethrough Courts in Zakia Jafri has begun. After theCourt verdict Ms Jafri said that she will appeal to thehigher courts. Our process of justice begins withMagistrates Court, does not end with that. Proclaim-

ing that Modi hasbeen given a‘clean chit’ forhis role in Gu-jarat carnage isfar from truth. It’s a clever prop-aganda, whichhas been dishedout with a delib-erate purpose.

At another level,Modi acolytes,Babu Bajrangiand Maya Kod-nani are in jailsfor their role inthe carnage. TheTehelka stingshows the collu-sion between theBabu Bajrangiclan and the stateled by Modi. Thetribunal set up by

Citizens for Justice and Peace with eminent juristslike P.B.Sawant also outlined Modi’s role in a veryclear manner. There has been some justice in fewcases of Gujarat. And that is due to yeomen strugglefor justice launched by the victims and human rightsdefenders. The process of justice needs to be pur-sued. The state of Gujarat has created all possibleobstacles in the justice being given to the victims. The claims of clean chit hold no water, we need tolook beyond the propaganda and the truth will showthe blood tainted hands of Modi.

Na tha kuch to Khuda tha kuchnahota to KhudahotaDuboiamujhkohone ne nahotameinto kyahota

In the above quoted Urdu couplet, the poet regretshis very existence in this life. The concept of re-ward and punishment in the eternal life here-

afteras a result of the test man has been putthroughraise a question: whether, taking up the test, was a compulsion or a matter of choice. The author,Abu Yahya, in his famous book, “Jab ZindagiShu-ruHogi - When life begins”talks on this subject in anawesome manner.

“There was an occasion when Allah offered an op-portunity to all of His living creations to enjoy Hiscompany eternally in the paradise. But to be able todo so, they first had to spend some time in the worldwithout being able to see Him. All they were sup-posed to do was to obey His orders, worship Him,and submit to Him without seeing Him. Governanceof the world was to be temporarily handed over intrust to the beings who accepted this challenge. Thebeings who accepted the challenge had to show thatdespite being the empowered rulers they were readyto obey Him without seeing Him. Those who usedthis authority and free will correctly were to be re-warded with the eternal company of Allah in the par-adise whereas those who failed this test were to facepunishment in the hell.

What happened then?

All living beings got scared and stepped back. Thereason was that the paradise was beautiful but thehell was equally terrifying!Who in his right mindwould present himself for such a trial? The emo-tional humans opted for this test. But, the decision togo through the test from Allah was taken by the col-lective soul of the entire humanity. Thus, it was apre-requisite for Allah’s ultimate standard of justiceto create every single human being and ask directlyabout the extent of the test he or she was willing toundergo. This happened because Allah is not unfairto anyone, not even in the smallest way. That is whyhe first created all human beings and then unveiled

his complete scheme of the test to them. Obviously, majority of the human beings were already preparedto take this test. Thus, they agreed to it being fullyaware of its implications. However, for those hu-mans who refused to take such a risk, the Almightydecided that they would take up the role of thosechildren who die before reaching maturity. The samechildren will then become Ghilmán and Hoors.

Did the rest of the humanity agree to such a toughtrial?

Allah showed his ultimate benevolence even in thismatter. As we are aware, not everyone is tested in thesame manner in the world. Each individual chose hisor her trial that day. Those who had a lot of resolvechose the times of the prophets for their test. Theirtest was to believe in and support the prophets dur-ing those eras of widespread ignorance. The primecondition for their success was that they had to standfirm even in the face of worst opposition, to remainsteadfast despite all kinds of challenges and to passon the message of their prophets to other people. That is why there was a huge reward for them in thehereafter; however, in case they denied and rejectedthe prophets, they had to face a severe punishment asthey had the benefit of direct guidance by theprophets. Examples of such people include Abu-Bakr, may Allah bepleased with him, on one hand, and people like Abu-Lahab on the other hand, whowas one of the worst enemies of the truth.

The second, and lower, level of the test is wherebypeople chose to become part of the nations of theprophets after the prophets had passed away. Theirtest is to protect themselves from going astray, sec-tarianism, deviations, and ignorance of later timeswhile holding steadfast to the divine law. They arealso expected to promote good deeds and to helpstop people from bad deeds. These responsibilitiesare assigned to them as they have the teachings ofthe prophets to turn to for guidance, and becausethey are born as Muslims. Therefore, they do nothave to pass through difficult trials to recognize theright path. It also meant that they have more guid-ance available to them compared to other people;hence, they have greater opportunities to reap re-

THE RULE OF “NO RISK NO GAIN”

wards. But in case of negligence, their accountabilityis to be very tough as well. Muslims belong to thisgroup.

The third group comprises of people who selected aneven easier test. They are born in circumstanceswhere they do not have access to any direct guidancefrom the prophets. Their test is based on the innatedivine guidance present in the nature of every humanbeing, that is, a test based on belief in oneness ofGod and universal moral values. Unlike other Mus-lims, they are not subject to the tough trials of fol-lowing the divine law nor of the companionship ofprophets through arduous times. Obviously, their ac-countability is also going to be quite lenient; accord-ingly their risk of facing dire punishments is alsolow and the opportunity to reap great rewards forthem is also less.

What about the prophets?

They were the ones who decided to take the toughesttest. That is why they received direct guidance fromAllah and the criterion for their accountability wasextremely strict too. We are well aware of what hap-pened to Prophet Jonah. He had not committed a sin;he had only reached an incorrect conclusion andacted upon it without divine approval. As a conse-quence, the Almighty locked him up in the belly of afish.

The real principle that works for all of the groups isthe same. Those who received more guidance willface stricter accountability and consequently, willreap either greater reward or worse punishment. Those who received lesser guidance will face lighteraccountability and therefore lesser rewards or pun-ishment. However, the decision about which of thethree groups each human being belonged to wastaken by human beings themselves and was not de-cided by the Almighty. This implies that if one re-ceives more guidance in the world, it is at his/herown request. As a consequence he/she is a candidatefor high level of success as well as equally severepunishment. It means he/she has opted for a hugerisk in line with a basic rule – No risk No gain.”In response to questions from readers the authorreplies:

“The basis of what I wrote is found in the Qur’an.The Qur’an has stated in chapter Al-'A`rāf (7:172)

that humans were born once, before the life in this

present world began. The verse clearly mentions thatat one point in time all human beings were presenttogether. The occasion is commonly known as theCovenant of Alast.

Similarly, the idea that the human beings willinglyagreed to be subjected to a worldly test is also ex-plained in the Qur’an. The chapter titled Al-‘Ahzab(33:72) clearly states that when this burden was of-fered to other creations, all of them declined to takeit. It was only the human beings who came forwardand accepted this test.

Both concepts as stated above, i.e. the presence of allhuman beings together in a previous life and theirdecision to undertake this test of their own free willare the basis of my extrapolation that each humanbeing also chose the specific level of the test he orshe wished to undergo. That is, each person choseone of the three tests: a test based on guidance foundin one’s innate nature, a test based on being the di-rect addressee of a prophet or a test based on beingamongst the followers and nation of a prophet afterthat prophet had passed away.

It is obvious that the tests of people in this world arenot the same. We also know that Allah who repeat-edly states that He does not inflict even the slightestinjustice on his servants is conducting this test. Howis it then possible that the absolutely just Allahwould subject His servants to a test whose possibleoutcome includes the horrible fate of being sent tohell, without informing them beforehand of the de-tails of the test and seeking their consent to it? It isbased on these facts that I have presented this partic-ular point of view in the book.” (Author’s website:http://www.inzaar.org/)

PS: This is not my write up. I have just used the ex-cerpts from writings of an Islamic author Abu Yahya, did necessary editing, added Quranic verses and asubject line.

Praise be to Allah, the Lordof Creations, and Peace andblessings be upon our

prophet Muhammad, the faithfuland the honest.

Oh, Allah, we know nothing butwhat You teach us. You are theAll- Knower, the Wise. Oh Allah, teach us what is good for us, andbenefit us from what You taughtus, and increase our knowledge.Show us the righteous things asrighteous and help us to do them, and show us the bad things as badand help us to keep away fromthem.

O Allah our Lord, lead us outfrom the depths of darkness andillusion, unto the lights of erudi-tion and knowledge, and from themuddy shallows of lusts unto theheavens of Your Vicinity.

Diseases alleviated with salat:

This is a very delicate and inter-esting issue, namely the relation-ship between Salat (IslamicPrayer) and physical health. Thereis not enough room here to go intofull details and elaborations ofsuch issue. However, I shall putforward some delicate points andimportant facts. In fact, in addition to its being akind of worship that includes sub-mission, veneration, and peaceful-

ness, Salat (Islamic Prayer) in-creases efficiency of the humanheart and blood circulation in thehuman boy. Here, we shall talkabout Salat from a very strict per-spective, namely its relationshipwith the human body and health.

In fact, diseases of the vertebralcolumn are very rare among Mus-lims who observe Salat, which in-cludes such movements asbowing, prostrating, and standingup, which very useful to the verte-bral column. All kinds of Arthritisare also rare among Muslims whoobserve Salat.

Also, varices and deep vein clotsare rare among Muslims, and so isvascular congestion in the pelvis, which causes hemorrhoids anduterus hemorrhage.

Difficulties in breathing, whichare caused by increase of CarbonDioxide in the lungs, are also rareamong Muslims, because compul-sory exhalation caused by bowingand prostration activates the heartand lungs.

Alzheimer and senility are alsouncommon among Muslims, be-cause prostration causes moreblood to flow into the brain andprevents such diseases that arecaused by deficiency of blood inthe brain. Therefore, prostrationforces more blood to flow intoblood vessels of the head by theforce of gravity.

Prophetic indication to this fact:

In this context, Allah’s Messen-ger, (PBUH), used to bid Bilal, the venerable Companion, mayAllah be pleased with him,“O Bilal! Call (people) to Salat

(Islamic Prayer)! Relieve us withit!”[Narrated by Abu Dawood (4985)and Ahmad (23137)]This is because Salat (IslamicPrayer) causes both physical andspiritual comfort.

In fact, a Divine Command ofAllah’s is far too Great and Wiseto be justified by one single vindi-cation or benefit. The good thingsunderlying Allah’s Most Wise Di-vine Commands are innumerable. An experiment carried out bysome scientists showed that whenthe head is lowered downwards, blood gathers therein and pressureon arteries increases. But whenthe head is then suddenly raisedup, the pressure decreases. Thisrise and fall of pressure makesblood vessel more flexible. Thismeans that a person whose blood

vessels are flexible can bear 23degrees of pressure, while a per-son who does not perform Salat(Islamic Prayer) cannot bear even18 degrees of pressure, the bloodvessels of his brain will be tornout at such degree of pressure, andhe will have a brain failure.

Uterus overturn, which is com-mon among women, is treated byspecial exercises that resemblegreatly movements done whileperforming Salat (Islamic Prayer).

Prayer and its Relation with Health

Islam

Beyond a shadow of doubt Allah’s Divine Com-mands embrace innumerable benefits to mankind.Yes, indeed! They are from the Creator, from theMaker, Who created mankind! They are from theAll-Aware, Who knows what is good or harmful tomankind! To get up before sunrise in order to perform theDawn Prayer and then to get exposed to ultravioletrays is something that is good for man’s health andentails his Lord’s Good Pleasure.

Most up-to-date medical discoveries show that can-

cerous tumors are caused by deficiency of man’s im-munity due to psychic stress, which can be removedonly by one thing, namely Islamic Monotheism. To wrap up, you can stand up everywhere and de-clare: “Faith is health!” If you believe that Allah,Alone, is the Disposer, the All-Wise, the All-Know-ing, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, and Pow-erful over all things, if you see only one Hand thathas control over the whole universe, you feel com-fortable and secure, you get rid of psychic stress, andyou system of immunity gets stronger. This is be-cause random growth of cells, which is called “Can-cer”, is caused by efficiency of immunity, which, inturn, comes from psychic stress, which can be re-moved by one single thing, namely IslamicMonotheism. That is why it has been rightly said:“Mankind can learn nothing better than IslamicMonotheism.” To the same effect, Allah, Most Gra-cious, says, “So, do not invoke with Allah another god lest youshould be among those who are tormented.”[XXVI; 213]Translation : Khaled Al-Athmeh
