BACN December Newsletter

TRANSCRIPT

Dear Member, Firstly, let me congratulate those nurses who took home awards from The Annual Cosmetic News Event. In no

particular order……wait for it………

ALL OF US!!! For

Best Association 2013!!

AGAIN - Nurses show ‘em how!

Sharon King took home, Silver for RISING STAR (I thought her star had been

right up there for ages!!)

Sharon Moore a well deserved Gold for Best Clinic- 4 rooms or more, those who

know Sharon, love her and know how hard she has worked.

Karen Locket got the Gold for Best Mobile Practitioner, always challenging and

Karen always looks so serene!

I’m almost embarrassed to say I won Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner of The Year,

especially when I consider those I was up against and all those I know to be

amazing, but here I know, really this is acknowledgement for the work of The BACN

which I represent.

Services to Industry - Me again! Most Important, a nurse, and again, every time I have, ’Served’, I have done so as

part of a team. Nurses are very much team players and I am more aware of the special characteristics of nurses

now, than ever before. We have really pulled together and without formalising, we have instinctively looked at how

we can better the field we work in and better serve our patients, rather than how we can serve ourselves. I am

actually really grateful and feel extremely privileged to have worked with such inspirational nurses and have learnt

and grown so much, personally as well as professionally, and there’s the real reward.

Now onto some even more important stuff.... We postponed our AGM this year, having in the past,

crammed into the end of our conference, we felt a need to a) spend more time on it and b) be more inclusive by

presenting it as below and inviting you all to vote online. Our accounts will be posted on the website in January, as

will the proposed changes to the constitution and the draft code of conduct. Please submit any additional agenda

items by the 15th January and we will post and call upon you all to vote, agree or disagree from 21st January.

We can then publish the outcome in February.

BACN Strategic Plan 2013

We have had an outstanding and extremely busy year, one that has been extremely challenging and worrying for

some. The work on The European Standards, addressing the issues around prescribing and contributing to The

Government Review on Standards in Cosmetic Services has brought a number of issues which affect us all into sharp

focus.

We are very much in touch with members and see emerging camps. Those who just want to quietly carry on as they

are, uncomfortable with the idea of further challenges or imposition of standards and those who can’t see the point

of an organisation representing Cosmetic Nurses, that doesn’t expect minimum standards and hold members to

account.

We must recognise the part aesthetic nurses play in the good, the bad and the ugly and examine how, as an

organisation, we can safeguard the role of nurses in aesthetics by shining a light on best practice and supporting

professional standards. We do see a real need to prove ourselves and move away from the image others have of our

work being glorified beauty therapy exploiting vain women, attracting those who just see this field as a means to

make a bit of money on the side, or to make a lot of money, with very little effort!

There is a real perception that we leave our professional standards behind and stop being, ’proper nurses’ because

we’ve entered a commercial world.

To fight this perception we need to step up and lead the way on educational pathways, competencies and standards.

Government, as we know, is revisiting standards and regulation in cosmetic services. I think the majority are agreed

that the current model of self-regulation is flawed and we feel we are well placed to take ownership of regulation for

nurses in aesthetics. Those of you who have read our report to The Bruce Keogh Review, will be familiar with our

vision on this. The report is available on our website.

We are now in the process of applying for charity status, having received the necessary non objections from the

NMC to use the protected term, ’Nurses’ and The PSA to use, ’British’ in our title.

Our goals for 2013 include;

Competencies

Publish Competencies for Nurses in Aesthetic Medicine, accredited by The RCN, owned by The BACN.

Education

Establish a foundation course based on core competencies, academically accredited, affordable and accessible, to

build upon towards certificate, diploma, degree and/or masters, as required.

Develop standards and a curriculum, referencing the competencies, for practical training, supervision and

mentorship of nurses new to aesthetics.

Continue to facilitate workshops and educational events for the continuing professional development of nurses in

aesthetics and establish a requirement for members to evidence a minimum of 2 days CPD per annum

Members Handbook

In time for our 2013 Conference and exhibition we aim to publish a Members Handbook, listing all members and

providing a directory of products and services plus useful resources to act as an invaluable reference tool for

members. It will be available free of charge to those who attend the Annual conference on 4th and 5th October, 2013

in Manchester.

V300 University Challenge (Reminder)

The BACN recognises that many nurses in aesthetics, who are not prescribers,

are facing up to the challenges (and expense!) of providing Botox on the

treatment menu. Also employment opportunities are limited these days for non-

prescribing nurses in aesthetics.

The winds of regulation are also blowing clearly in the direction of prescribing

nurses - and we don't want our members to be left out in the cold, particularly

when we have all worked so hard to establish ourselves and have loyal clients

who trust and depend upon us.

With this in mind we are providing, with the support of sponsors, an opportunity

for aesthetic nurses to attend events around the country to find out about the

V300 Non-Medical Prescribing course - have your questions answered by

university lecturers and nurses who have undertaken the course.

Let us address your fears, and see if we can't get you past the

barriers you perceive, real or imagined.

Our V300 'University Challenge' Events will be held:

LONDON - 24th January 2013

EDINBURGH - 29th January 2013

BIRMINGHAM - 31st January 2013

MANCHESTER - 5th February 2013

BRISTOL - 7th February 2013

The agenda:

* What is The V300? An introduction by a University lecturer.

* The Role of the DMP.

* A nurse's experience of the course.

* Q&A - Put your questions to the University panel.

Please help us let everyone know about these meetings - ask

reps to talk about it, tell nurses you know - this is a great

opportunity to get any questions answered. Many people will

benefit from this, and it won't be repeated, so get in there.

For more information and to book your place (£50 deposit, refundable upon attendance)

Open to Non – Members.

Credentialing Members

One of the questions posed to us at our meeting with civil servants, was what makes your members better than non-

members? How do you credential your members? As you all know, we don’t ask anything of our members except

NMC registration. It is important to us that we do not exclude any nurse in aesthetics, however, we need to accept

there is an expectation that The BACN badge represents something more, than having paid a subscription fee,

particularly if we are to promote our members to the public.

How do we begin to credential our members? We have discussed this at length, since it is a path very difficult,

impossible to navigate to everyone’s satisfaction, particularly if we are to be meaningful and fair to all. This

challenge must be addressed since we will be launching a practitioner finder on the new website this Spring, now is

the time.

To this end, and following exhaustive discussions we propose the following changes to membership terms.

1. A code of conduct in addition to The NMC Code, which members must sign up to.

2. Require members to maintain a logbook of procedures, including adverse events, for audit of practice, and

to evidence experience. Appraisal is something we will work towards.

3. Introduce two tier membership.

Associate members as per current requirements (NMC registration).

Full members will be Nurse Independent Prescribers with a minimum of 3 years’ experience as aesthetic

nurses, pass an online MCQ and may be asked to submit evidence such as certificates and or references.

Only Full Members and Honorary members will be posted on The Practitioner Finder.

Professional Staff

Membership has now grown to 600. We will be employing Liz DePass 4 days a week from January to support Kris

Wilkinson. Kris will continue to manage and support membership, Liz will focus on events and business

management. Emma Davies will work two days a week on professional aspects of our work, to drive projects

forward, this is necessary as the work load increases.

Membership Subscriptions

We propose an increase of membership subscription fees to support our increased fixed costs.

Full members to pay £250 (£20 per month direct debit).

Associate members to pay £150 (£12.00 per month direct debit)

With the new website the opportunity to pay monthly, by direct debit will be available and the increased fee will be

introduced in February for new members and those renewing membership.

On-Line AGM. Please have your say.

Please take the time to read the proposed Code of Conduct, the new Constitution and our annual accounts, all

available on the website for members only. You can view the code of conduct here

You will be sent a link on 21st January to vote for or against the above proposals, also for honorary members and

new board members. Voting will close on 31st January 2013 and the results will be published to members in the first

week of February 2013.

We would like to announce we will be holding a workshop on how we are utilising

DermaPen treatments with Enerpeel, on Sunday 17th of February at the Cosmetic News

Congress, with Professor Tony Chu. This will be a great opportunity for you to try the

Dermapen and we may also have something new in automatic dermal needling to

demonstrate.

We are arranging a Saturday night out in London on January the

16th on a first come first served basis for BACN members. You can

sign up for the workshop or evening event by emailing

[email protected],uk. Please send your suggestions for an

evening venue along with your e-mail. The only condition is to

visit us and have a chat to us at our stand number 57A.

We will also be at the Professional Beauty Aesthetic Medicine

Exhibition at the end of February.

Looking forward to hearing from you, The SkinMed Team.
