A Thought for Today:

Many things can wait; the child cannot. Now is the time his bones are being formed, his mind is being developed. To him we cannot say tomorrow; his name is today.

Report Cards Went Home This Week The first report cards of the school year are very important! They can set the tone for the whole year. If the

early grades are strong, we tell our kids to keep up the good work and the whole family expects this year to be a good one. If the grades are disappointing, kids and parents alike can feel discouraged and ready - even this early - to categorize the year among the bad ones.

Shakespeare put it this way in Hamlet: “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” In other words, Attitude Is Everything.

Let’s work on helping our kids develop a winning attitude that supports success now and in life’s adventures ahead. Here are some important concepts we need to teach at report card season and re-teach all year long:

Your brain is like a muscle. Use it hard and it will become strong; let it get lazy and it will grow weaker. The harder you work, the smarter you get - and the easier it is to learn.

There is nothing in the middle school curriculum you can’t do, although there may be things you haven’t learned to do yet. Keep at it and you will succeed.

A good report card doesn’t mean you are so smart that you don’t need to study. Everybody needs to study until the information you are expected to know and the skills you are expected to acquire come automatically to you when you need them.

It is better to work a little every day than to save up your work and do it all in one long session. You don’t get in shape by working out for 3 hours on Saturday and lying around all the rest of the week – invest 30 minutes every day in physical activity and you’ll see the difference.

Thursday, we sent report cards home. If you didn’t see your child’s report card, just give the Counseling Office a call at 301-972-7980 and ask for a replacement. You’ll notice that this year’s report card has a new feature: Marking Period Averages are now printed in the upper right hand corner of the page. This number is the GPA (Grade Point Average) you earned during the quarter.

To figure your GPA, assign each grade a value. A = 4, B = 3,

C = 2, and D = 1. Then add up the values and divide by the number

of grades. The GPA gives you a good idea

of your overall performance even if individual grades go

up and down over time.

October’s Student Leaders of the Pack Each month, our staff selects five students from each team who have exemplified the Timberwolf

PRIDE core values of Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Effort. Sometimes, these students have earned recognition through scholarly excellence, but these values are personal as well as academic, so sometimes the honorees will be chosen for displaying the good citizenship that makes our school a better place to work and learn. Student Leaders of the Pack for October received their certificates at a ceremony on Friday, November 5. Parents were invited to attend, a light breakfast was served, and photographs were taken of each award winner for display in the school lobby. Congratulations to these great kids! We are very proud of the October Leaders of the Pack!

Hello, students and parents. This is the SGA: Diana Firstova, your president; Benton Anthony, your vice president; Nancy Morgan, your secretary; and Abigail Nalesnik, your treasurer. Every week in the Back Pocket we will be writing tips on how to be successful in school. So, be on the look-out.

Students, if you are having a hard time focusing on school work, here's a great tip to start your time off with! When you get home from school, you probably don't feel ready to sit down and do homework. That is OK. Before you do your homework you can exercise. Going on a walk outside can relax you. Just hearing little birds chirping can be relaxing. If you even want to go on a treadmill, you can imagine yourself climbing Sugarloaf Mountain. This is a successful tip that will make you relaxed and a bit skinnier!

Spirit of Community Awards The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is

the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level.

The program's goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities. Over the past 15 years, more than 280,000 young Americans have participated in the program, and more than 90,000 of them have been officially recognized for their volunteer work.

This year, John Poole Middle School had three 8th grade girls who were eligible for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program by virtue of their having accumulated over 100 SSL hours. Those three wonderful students are Rebecca Dietz, Adele Spinder and Emma Ross.

Their SSL hours were earned through Relay for Life, serving as a MCRD counselor assistant and participation in LEO club respectively. Each girl has impacted their community in extremely positive ways. A committee read all three entries and made the very difficult decision of who would be this year’s nomination for John Poole Middle School.

Congratulations to Emma Ross, who will represent JPMS in the Spirit of Community Awards Program; to Rebecca and Adele for their very strong records of outstanding service; and to all the JPMS students who volunteer their time so generously. Keep up the good work!

Student Service Learning Notes

Give a Little Time…Make a Big Difference

Take a minute to look at the picture on the first week of this week’s Back Pocket. Just under the red circle that highlights the new Marking period Averages section, you will find the Student Service Learning (SSL) summary. Get in the habit of checking the SSL information on the report card. If it doesn’t seem correct, contact Mrs. Arnold, our school SSL coordinator. Keep copies of all SSL documentation so you can straighten out any bookkeeping errors easily.

SSL activities help middle school students achieve curricular objectives in Grade 6 Science, Grade 7 English, and Grade 8 US History.

High school students enrolled in the National, State, and Local Government course have the opportunity to learn about advocacy in semester 1 and 2. SSL hours are earned for full participation in the SSL activities and successful completion of the course.

Students may earn SSL hours with school clubs that focus on service. Often times the service activities involve indirect action. In indirect action, a need is addressed but students do not meet the recipients of their service face-to-face. Examples of indirect service activities include collections of food, clothing, and/or hygiene items, fundraising, and blood drives.

Plan now to be involved in SSL activities over Winter Break. Look for opportunities on the SSL Web site www.mcpsssl.org, or listen for opportunities promoted at school.

Generation Mobile

Federal Communications Commission will host Generation Mobile, an FCC forum on kids’ use of mobile technology on Wednesday, December 1st from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. to explore the issues surrounding kids’ mobile tech usage.

We all know that more and more kids are using cell phones and smartphones with growing proficiency and at earlier ages than ever before. But did you know that 63 % of 12 and 13 year olds and 80% of 14-17 year-olds now own cell phones and that teens on average send a text message every 10 minutes during waking hours? Mobile phones are the hub of a teen’s social life; they offer amazing learning and communication opportunities. However, like anything, with these unprecedented opportunities come challenges and concerns.

The Generation Mobile forum will kickoff with remarks by Chairman Genachowski, followed by an overview of recent research findings about kids and mobile phone usage. Also included in the forum will be two panel discussions. The first panel, “Mobile Tech: Opportunities and Challenges,” will bring together educators, researchers, children’s advocates and teens. Our teens and panelists will share their thoughts on the many opportunities (e.g., education and communication) and dangers (e.g., cyberbullying, sexting, and privacy concerns.) associated with mobile technology. The second panel, “Parental Tools for the Mobile Generation”, will feature representatives from the mobile phone industry and content providers and will focus on ways to educate and empower parents by providing the tools and resources for kids’ safe and responsible mobile technology usage.

Last Opportunity to Register for MC Adventures A one-day enrichment program offered for gifted and talented students in grades 4 – 6 is

scheduled for Saturday, November 13, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. on the Takoma Park campus of Montgomery college.

Students will have an opportunity to select four workshops to participate in during the day. Workshops cover a variety of topics, including kids “boot camp”, art, technology, creative writing, science, and logic, and much more. Workshops fill quickly, so register right away!

For additional brochures or registration information, contact Workforce Development & Continuing Education at 240-567-7264 or 240-567-7917 or access our website at www.montgomerycollege.edu/youth.

Mr. Stevens Made this Veteran’s Day Memorable by sharing his experiences and his gear with his students.

We are proud of the veterans who serve on our staff and appreciate their dedication to serving our country.

Thank you, Mrs. Bowman, Mr. Spadin, Mr. Stevens and Mr. Willett!

Homework Club will be held every Wednesday in the Media Center. Books and Boxing will be held on Tuesdays thru November 23) Open Gym is held on Tuesdays (last day November 16) Drama rehearsal will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Jewelry Club will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays (November 23-December 9)

Leo Club will be doing Gift Wrapping on December 14 and 16

RecExtra would like to announce a new club! Beading and Jewelry Making! We will start by making beads, and a few other fun items, from Sculpey (a clay that hardens when baked in the oven.) From those beads we will design and make our own jewelry. There will also be other beads and findings available to add to your designs. Registration forms are available in the front office. The Club dates are: November 16, 18, 23, 30, and December 2.

The Leo Club had a meeting on Friday and we have lots of great activities coming up. We need you to join us so we can help more people! Our next activity is a coat collection—we are also accepting hats, gloves, mittens and scarves. The collection bins are in the front lobby, near the doors to the buses and the gym lobby. Please help us help others!

RecExtra is always looking for donations of usable left over arts and craft items. Please drop them in the front office!

RecExtra is only funded until the end of December, 2010. Major cutbacks in the 2010

budget meant that JPMS was one of very few middle schools in MCPS receiving RecExtra

support for quality after-school programming for our kids this fall. Now, new cuts

anticipated for January 1 could end RecExtra at JPMS altogether.

JPMS Activities that RecExtra is providing include: boxing training, cooking, sewing,

exercise classes (zumba), scrapbooking, babysitting lessons, soccer clinics, and drama

support.

Classes are offered to expose the students to new skills, engaging activities and to offer an opportunity for our

students to give back to their community. If you value the programs here at JPMS, it’s time to let our County Council

know what RecExtra means to our community.

Send emails to the councilmembers listed below. Remind them that we have no other community activities for

students locally; that RecExtra provides a safe haven for students with no one at home after school; and that academic

support including homework help is in jeopardy, too.

[email protected]

http://nancyfloreen.blogspot.com/

The clubs that are scheduled through December have another

month to go, but after January 1 we cannot be certain. Thanks for your help!

After- School Activities RecExtra is sponsored by the Montgomery County Department of Recreation and is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Please call a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at 240-777-4925 or 240-777- 6974 TTY to request accommodations no later than two weeks prior to the activity.

RecExtra has returned to JPMS with exciting programs for all students. Drama Club, Boxing, and whatever else are just a few of the opportunities already on the schedule. If your child has a particular interest, his or her feedback is very important. Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield at 301-972-7979 or winessa_r_crutchfield @mcpsmd.org.
