Math 472 (Fourier Anly & Wave) 3
Students interested in applying to graduate programs in pure mathematics are encouraged to take Math 421 (Modern
Algebra II) and Math 431 (Introduction to Topology).
1.) Students are strongly encouraged to take Math 327 as soon as possible to build mathematical reasoning and proof
writing skills.
2.) Students should be aware that Math 322 is only offered in the Fall.
3.) Students are encouraged to take Math 401 and Math 402 in consecutive semesers. Math 402 is only offered in the
Spring. Similarly, students wishing to take Math 421 (Modern Algebra II) as an elective are encouraged to arrange their
schedules so that it is taken immediately after Math 322. Math 421 is offered only in the Spring.
4.) Students may also consider taking the Modern Algebra sequence in semesters 5-6 and the Advanced Calculus
sequence in semesters 7-8, reversing the order above.

Arts and Sciences College Minimum Requirements This is a sample roadmap. Variations can be considered with your advisor.Total credit hours = 120 You will be assigned a faculty advisor once you complete Math 1522
300/400 level credit hours = 48 Students are strongly encouraged to:
Minimum credit hours taught in A&S = 90 Take CS151 early (semester 1 or 2)
Take 311 soon after 2530
Take 313 before or concurrently to 312
University Residence Requirements Take 321 early (absolutely before 401, 375) & before/concurrently to 316 if no linear algebra knowledge.
Minimum hours = 30 Things to consider regarding elective choices:
Senior standing = 15 past 92
At least 50% of MajorAt least 25% of Minor
Minimum graduation GPA = 2.00
Math 462, 463: Offers deeper theoretical understanding/delving of ODEs/PDEs
Math 471: If you're interested in computing, offers practice and experience in large scale parallel computing
Math 472: Interest in analysis, wavelets, image processing
Stat 345: Recommended course for breadth, especially for health sciences, finance, actuary

Math 464 will solidify your linear algebra skills and prepare you for jobs using applied mathematics (ex: Sandia Nat'l Labs,
Air Force, computing consulting companies)
Math 441 & Stat 400 level can be used instead of Stat 345 to get a good introduction to probability and statistics.

Recommended to minor in another science (CS, PHYS, BIOL, CHEM, EPS, ENVS). This will prepare you for the job market
and will give you a better idea of how math is used.
Math 327: if you are unfamiliar with mathematical abstraction, it helps to take 327 before 321 and 401. It will prepare you
to better write and understand proofs. If you choose to take this course, take it early (recommended semester 3, move
316 back)Math 412 nonlinear dynamics: will use mathematics from many other areas such as calculus, odes, linear algebra, and
applications

It is important for those in the math education concentration to pay close attention to the courses which are only
offered in the Fall (305 and 322) or in the Spring (306 and 338). It is also highly recommended to take 327 and 314
(or 321) early and before the courses with a heavy emphasis on proof writing.
