INTRODUCTION

Dear Student,

Welcome to the University of New England (UNE) Student Practicum Handbook.

This document has been compiled in order to provide you with information pertinent to the

undertaking and completion of the placement components embedded in the Bachelor of Exercise

and Sports Science and Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology. This handbook includes

information about placement requirements, expectations, behaviour, conduct and responsibilities we

expect from you, as well as examples of the paperwork to be completed.

This handbook is designed to guide you through your placement. Please don’t hesitate to contact

the Clinical Placement Office for further information at any point during the placement. We welcome

you to look at the Student Practicum Portal at any stage, as this page contains information we trust

will be helpful to you throughout your practicum experience.

DEFINITION AND GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Accrediting body Exercise and Sport Science Australia

(ESSA) who advise the standard against

which our students will be measured.

Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) An individual who is registered with the

accrediting body as an Exercise Scientist.

Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) An individual who is registered with the

accrediting body as an Exercise

Physiologist.

Course Coordinator A UNE staff member who is responsible for

ensuring the academic integrity of the

degree program and who is authorised to

approve any changes to the program of

study throughout its delivery.

Clinical Placement Coordinator A UNE professional staff member who is

responsible for the administration of the

placement for the disciplines of Exercise and

Sports Science/Clinical Exercise Physiology.

Clinical Placement Educator A UNE academic staff member who is

responsible for the organisation of students’

placement in Exercise and Sports Science

/Clinical Exercise Physiology.

Student The individual currently enrolled in the

Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science or

Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at

the University of New England, in Armidale,

New South Wales.

Supervisor An individual who is recognised by the

accrediting body who is nominated by an

appropriate agency to supervise a student

while undertaking professional placement.

Where a co-supervisor is utilised, this person

is responsible for approving the final

outcome and certifying the competency of

the student.


COURSE OVERVIEW – BACHELOR OF EXERCISE AND SPORTS SCIENCE Graduates of an accredited course in Exercise and Sports Science should be able to design safe

and effective exercise interventions. This includes health and wellness interventions to affect

behavioural change and increase exercise and functional capacity across diverse contexts and

settings.

UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills in their interactions with clients, peers, colleagues, other health professionals and xternal stakeholders;

2. Apply specialist knowledge and evidence-based practice to accurately and efficiently collect and interpret subjective and objective asssessment data;

3. apply specialist knowledge and evidence-based practice to prescribe and deliver safe and effective health/exercise/sports interventions for individuals of varying social and/or cultural backgrounds;

4. Demonstrate a sound understanding of lifestyle modification and behavioural change and subsequently facilitate behavioural change in the prescription and delivery of their exercise interventions;

5 Demonstrate a sound understanding of the risks associated with exercise prescription and delivery and adapt strategies to minimise risk; and

6. Practise responsibly with respect for and in accordance with, Exercise and Sports Science Australia's code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice.


COURSE OVERVIEW – CLINICAL EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY Graduates of an accredited course in Clinical Exercise Physiology should be able to design safe and

UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS – EXSC322

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology AND the Bachelor of Exercise &

Sports Science must satisfy two sets of placement requirements in order to pass the EXSC322

unit.

1. Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Practicum Requirements

In order to gain accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES), or an Accredited Exercise

Physiologist (AEP) with ESSA, EXSC322 students must satisfy the following requirements:

Practicum Hours:

A minimum of 140 hours of practicum is required, with the following breakdown:

a) At least 80 of the 140 hours must demonstrate attainment of competency in exercise

assessment, prescription and delivery. These hours must be with clients who are seen for

the purpose of undertaking an exercise intervention to improve their health and fitness,

wellbeing and performance, and not participating in an exercise intervention for the treatment

and/or management of a clinical condition or injury. However, the service can be focused on

the prevention of chronic conditions. For these 80 hours, supervision must be by one or

more of the following:

- Accredited Exercise Scientist

- Accredited Exercise Physiologist

- Accredited Sports Scientist

- An individual with an AQF level 7 Bachelor degree in Exercise and Sports Science

- An AQF level 7 Bachelor degree qualified Physical Education teacher with a major in physical

education where the placement is in a school setting

b) Activities undertaken for the remaining 60 hours may be in an area that reflects the

Exercise Science standards. These hours must be supervised by a qualified and

experienced professional who holds a qualification (recognised or endorsed by a regulating

authority, such as a national association or AHPRA), for the activity they are supervising.

At completion of 140 hours, students must be able to demonstrate competency in exercise

assessment, prescription and delivery.

Co-Supervision

- Professionals as described under item (b) above may also undertake a role of co-supervising

students for the 80 hours in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery, however there

must be oversight supervision in place by an individual who meets the qualification criteria

for the 80-hour category, as listed above.

- Where a co-supervision arrangement is necessary, the UNE practicum coordinator must

arrange and approve the oversight supervision plan.

- The oversight supervisor may include another practitioner, the UNE practicum coordinator,

or another suitable employee of the education provider.

- Effective oversight must include constant communication and information sharing between

the direct supervisor and the oversight supervisor, and the UNE practicum coordinator. Client

safety must be the priority. Each involved party must have direct contact with the student

such that all involved have a comprehensive understanding of the activities being delivered.


- Evidence of documented communication and information sharing between the oversight

supervisor, direct supervisor, student and UNE practicum coordinator is required.

- The oversight supervisor must co-sign the student’s Record of Student Engagement and

Supervisor Feedback Report/s.

Acceptable Activities:

The following are examples of activities that can be undertaken as part of the 80 hours to

demonstrate competency in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery:

- Conduct client assessments

- Exercise prescription

- Conducting warm ups / cool downs

- Monitor client exercise session

- Strength and conditioning for a team or individual

- Physiological assessment of athlete

- Body composition for individual or team

- Exercise testing

- Fitness appraisals

- Performance testing

- Talent identification

- Health consultation

- Recruitment fitness testing

- Fitness testing or training for emergency services

- Workplace/corporate health and fitness programs

- Conducting lifestyle management programs

*While observation can be a valuable learning tool in developing practical skills, it must meet

the following requirements to be included as logged hours: The observation must be an active,

involved, engaged and meaning learning activity for the student. Where a student is passive in

observing the session or activity, it should not be included.

The following are examples of activities that can be used to demonstrate competency toward the

remaining 60 hours of the practicum to meet Exercise Science Standards:

- Coaching (from grass roots to elite level for both individuals or teams)

- Biomechanical assessment / analysis

- Sports first aid

- Sports trainer

- Match/performance analysis

- Sports drug testing

- Anti-doping activities for sport

- Skill development camps (for teams or athletes)

- Laboratory assistant

- Data collection / analysis

- Calibration of equipment

- Haematology / biochemistry

- Occupational injury risk assessment / management

- Blood tests

- Anthropometry

The following examples are activities that are not suitable to be claimed as hours for exercise


science practicum:

- Physiotherapy

- Chiropractic treatment

- Psychological treatment (for clinical conditions)

- Clinical exercise treatment

- Massage

- Dry needling

- Urine / sweat analysis

- Research unrelated to the field

- Dietary intervention

- Child supervision

- Cleaning / maintaining gym equipment

2. Unit-Level Practicum Requirements

In order to successfully complete EXSC322, students must satisfy the following:

a) Completion of a logbook detailing total number of hours completed at each placement site

and the activities undertaken during these hours. This logbook will be completed via Excel

spreadsheet and must be submitted to the Clinical Placement Educator each fortnight for

review;

b) Completion of a Record of Student Engagement detailing total number of hours completed

and activities undertaken for each placement site, to be signed by placement supervisor/s;

c) Completion of a number of case studies that utilise the SOAP note format detailing exercise

assessment, prescription and delivery for clients encountered during placement. Please note

that you will benefit from familiarizing yourself with, and starting on, this assignment

at the commencement of your placement/s;

d) Submission of a supervisor feedback report midway through, and at completion of, each

placement, indicating competency in each learning outcome;

e) Submission of a Student Feedback Report at completion of all placement hours; and

f) Successful completion of a practical examination at the end of Trimester 2 that further

assesses practical competency in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery.

EXSC322 Assignment Items

Further information relating to the assessment items for this unit will be made available to you on

Moodle from Trimester 2 commencement, however the following provides you with a brief overview:

1. Case Study Reports

Weight: 50%

Word Limit: 3000 words

Due Date: See Moodle

Assessment Notes: It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the unit.

Students will be expected to present three (3) de-identified case study reports in the form of SOAP notes. Each case study report will be generated from clients they have encountered whilst on practicum, and should clearly outline the subjective and objective information and data gained from the client, the results of any assessments undertaken, and the client’s exercise prescription and plan. These reports require the students to demonstrate compliance with the ESSA Code of


Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice through appropriate reporting and the delivery of services within the scope of practice for an AES, and will demonstrate competency in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery.

This will be submitted via Moodle and marked by the Unit Coordinator.

For each case study, complete the following:

Overview of Case Study: Provide a brief, one-paragraph overview of the presenting client.

Subjective and Objective Information: What did the client tell you, and what were your objective

observations?

Assessment: List the assessment items that you and your supervisor included, and justify their

inclusion using the evidence base. Indicate when and how you would reassess the client to

monitor their progress. Provide the outcomes of the initial assessment and comment on these.

Plan: List any precautions or contraindications to exercise that apply to this client and outline

how you would assess and/or monitor and/or adjust the exercise prescription for each one. List

the goals of exercise prescription (SMART format) that you negotiated with the client. Provide

your initial exercise prescription for the client with reference to the FITT principle, and justify

the prescription using the evidence base. Provide one progression for each exercise.

2. Practical Examination

Weight: 50%

Exam Duration: Approximately 30 minutes

Due Date: See Moodle and notes below


At the completion of a minimum of 140 hours of practicum, students will be required to sit a practical examination that will contribute 50% towards their overall grade for the unit. The practical examination will assess a student’s competency in relation to their ability to:

implement and prescribe safe and effective exercise interventions based on referral information

demonstrate an awareness of presenting pathologies and co-morbidities and the interaction

these have with exercise

demonstrate sound judgement in the correct selection and application of assessment protocols

demonstrate professional reasoning to ensure the management of a client is tailored to their

individual needs

Students will be required to undertake one (1) client scenario, which will focus on exercise delivery to healthy individuals within the scope of practice of an AES. Students will be required to: provide two (2) subjective questions that they would ask of the client, provide two (2) assessments that they would perform on the client and demonstrate one (1), and provide two (2) exercises that they would prescribe to the client and demonstrate one (1). It is a mandatory requirement for a student to pass this assessment component in order to pass the unit. A fail for this requirement will require students to undertake additional practicum hours through enrolling in the Trimester 3 offering of this unit.

The content of the practical examination will primarily be based on supervisor feedback and progress during your placement. On completion of 50% of your practicum hours, you must contact the Clinical Placement Educator to schedule your practical examination and obtain further instruction as to its content. The practical examination will be completed on campus, as part of a practicum site visit, or via Skype.


3. Practicum Completion

Weight: 0%, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

Due Date: End of Trimester 2 examination period

Assessment Notes: Completion of 140 practicum hours to the required standard. Submission of signed Record of Student Engagement, completed logbook, completed Supervisor Feedback Report and completed Site Feedback Report. It is mandatory to pass this component in order to pass the unit.

There is also a “Practical Skill Competency” assessment component for this item. This refers to the practical competencies that have been introduced at the course level. Further information will be provided on this item as its assessment methods are determined.

*Please note: Your practicum hours MUST be completed by the end of Trimester 2. If you do not feel that this is reasonably achievable given your personal circumstances, you must advise the Unit Coordinator at the beginning of Trimester 1, and submit a Special Extension of Time application.

As per Discipline policy and ESSA rulings, advanced standing cannot be granted for any practicum

unit, unless the student is transferring from another NUCAP-accredited university. This means that

prior or current work experience will not contribute to the practicum hours that are required to be

completed. When a student is transferring from another NUCAP-accredited university, the advanced

standing application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, as the student may have completed

hours under supervision that is no longer accepted by NUCAP.

The Clinical Placement Office must be the first to make initial contact with a potential placement site.

Students are not to make initial contact.

Paid work cannot count towards your practicum hours.


PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS – EXSC390

In order to gain accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) with ESSA, 4 th year

Clinical Exercise Physiology students enrolled in EXSC390 must satisfy two sets of placement

requirements in order to pass the EXSC390 unit.

1. Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) Practicum Requirements

Practicum Hours:

A minimum of 360 hours of practicum is required to be undertaken in a range of activities relevant to

the AEP professional standards. These placements must include activities to demonstrate

attainment of competency as an entry level practitioner in exercise assessment, prescription

and delivery as demonstrated through effective assessment methods, and determined by an AEP.

This includes:

a) At least 200 hours spread across the areas of cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and metabolic domains to allow students to demonstrate capability as an entry level practitioner

in these areas. These hours do not need to be evenly split in each of these domains. Students must be deemed competent in each of these domains.

b) At least 100 hours in any of the other AEP pathology domains as specified in the AEP professional standards i.e. cancer, kidney, mental health, neurological, respiratory/pulmonary. There is no set requirement to complete hours in ALL of the pathology domains.

c) 60 hours in any of the AEP pathology domains or in any other activities relevant to the AEP

d) No more than 40 hours can be undertaken in a simulated learning environment (SLE). The use of SLEs must be evidence-based and include an ongoing review and evaluation process. In order to be used as a substitute for practicum experience, simulations must have clear learning objectives, problem solving components built into the scenarios, structured debriefing, and be high fidelity.

At completion of 360 hours, students must be able to demonstrate competency in exercise

assessment, prescription and delivery in all AEP pathology domains. It is the aim of this

clinical placement that students complete sufficient hours in each domain to be competent

as an entry-level practitioner in that area. Please see attached supervisor feedback report

template for further detail on the competencies relating to each pathology domain.

Supervision Requirements:

Supervision must be by:

a) An AEP for at least 200 of the 360 hours. UNE requires that the AEP have at least two years’ experience in the field.

b) An AEP or a qualified and experienced professional who holds a qualification (recognised or endorsed by a regulating authority such as a national association or APHRA) for the activity they are supervising, and relevant to the client condition they are servicing, for the remaining 160 hours. Hours that are not supervised by an AEP must have AEP oversight of the activities and assessment of the learning outcomes, and the competency must be co-signed by an AEP.


Co-Supervision

- Professionals other than AEPs as described under item (b) above may undertake a role of

co-supervising students for maximum 160 hours of placement, however there must be

oversight supervision in place by an AEP.

- Where a co-supervision arrangement is necessary, the UNE practicum coordinator must

arrange and approve the oversight supervision plan.

- The oversight supervisor may include another practitioner, the UNE practicum coordinator,

or another suitable employee of the education provider.

- Effective oversight must include constant communication and information sharing between

the direct supervisor and the oversight supervisor, and the UNE practicum coordinator. Client

safety must be the priority. Each involved party must have direct contact with the student

such that all involved have a comprehensive understanding of the activities being delivered.

- Evidence of documented communication and information sharing between the oversight

supervisor, direct supervisor, student and UNE practicum coordinator is required.

- The oversight supervisor must co-sign the student’s Record of Student Engagement and

Supervisor Feedback Report/s.

Acceptable Activities:

Practicum hours are to be classified by the primary pathology that is being addressed in the

session of interest. Acceptable activities include:

- Exercise assessment and prescription for clients with a diagnosed condition (allocated

according to pathology)

- Exercise delivery/intervention for clients with a diagnosed condition (allocated according to

pathology)

- Diagnostic procedure (e.g. ECG, stress test, clinical investigations)

- Education delivery for a specific pathology (e.g. cancer information session)

- Research with an exercise intervention for a special population (e.g. running a weekly Type

2 Diabetes group exercise class)

Unacceptable activities include:

- Clients being seen for the purpose of improving health and well-being with no clear

pathology (apparently healthy)

- Activities outside of the AEP Scope of Practice

Each case study report will be generated from patients they have encountered whilst on practicum, and should clearly outline the subjective and objective information and data gained from the patient, the results of any assessments undertaken, and the client’s exercise prescription and plan. These reports require the students to demonstrate compliance with the ESSA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice through appropriate clinical reporting and the delivery of services within the scope of practice for an AEP, and will demonstrate competency in exercise assessment, prescription and delivery.

This will be submitted via Moodle and marked by the Unit Coordinator.

For each case study, complete the following:

their condition.

Subjective and Objective Information: What did the patient tell you, and what were your

objective observations? Include a brief overview of the pathophysiology of the patient’s

condition, the signs and symptoms expected with the patient’s presentation, and the functional

impairments that you may have observed (please provide references).

Assessment: List the assessment items that you and your supervisor included, and justify their

inclusion using the evidence base. Indicate when and how you would reassess the patient to

monitor their progress. Provide the outcomes of the initial assessment and comment on these.


Plan: List any precautions or contraindications to exercise that apply to this patient and outline

how you would assess and/or monitor and/or adjust the exercise prescription for each one. List

the clinical goals of treatment (SMART format) that you negotiated with the client. Provide your

initial exercise prescription for the client, with reference to FITT and with the inclusion of

prescription for each category of sensory, mobility, strength and functional translation. Provide

one progression and one regression for each exercise. Justify the prescription using the

evidence base.

2. Practical Examination

Weight: 50%

Exam Duration: Approximately 60 minutes

EXSC322 – MANDATORY PRE-PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Clinical Placement is an essential part of the Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science/Clinical

Exercise Physiology. There are several mandatory requirements that need to be completed before

you can go on placement. Please note a number of these requirements take some time to complete,

thus students are advised to commence processes as soon as possible to ensure early compliance

requirements are met.

EXSC322 students must organize and submit the following prior to commencing placement:

Working with Children Check (relevant to the State) It is a UNE requirement that all students obtain a state-specific Working With Children Check. This

process must be completed and evidence of your WWCC number and expiry date uploaded to

InPlace prior to the commencement of your first placement. Information about the NSW Working

Completion of First Aid and CPR You are required to complete a First Aid and CPR Certificate (HLTAID003 and HLTAID001), which

is to remain current for the duration of your degree and during your practicum placement.

Student Declaration/Fitness for Practice All students are required to complete an electronic Student Declaration Form on InPlace at the

commencement of Trimester 1. Students must read the questions carefully and ensure that they fully

understand and comply with all compulsory requirements for the practicum program. Students

MUST complete these questions prior to commencement of their first placement. It is the

individual student’s responsibility to ensure that they are aware of the contents of the declaration

and abide by it at all times when enrolled in the practicum unit. Please see the Student InPlace

Manual for instructions on how to complete this.

IMPORTANT: Students who are aware of any chronic or acute injuries, illnesses (including

mental health) or other such issues that may affect them in the practicum setting will be

required to provide a Fitness for Practice Certificate signed by their Medical Practitioner prior

to commencement of placement. Please notify the Clinical Placement Office as soon as

possible to advise them of any issues that may prevent you from completing your placement.

students before placement. Students are advised that these are the minimum requirements which

must be met prior to attending placement regardless of placement type or location. Please

** Please note that each State’s Hospital system will have its own relevant requirements which may

include online training and completing other documents. Please make sure you are aware of each

State’s Health System requirements related to the particular placement.

Immunisation and Student Vaccinations

Students must be appropriately vaccinated prior to entering any NSW Ministry of Health Facility.

Further information on the mandatory Immunisation requirements for students is available for

students by accessing the compulsory ClinConnect Student Education Module located at


Students are required to follow the instructions and guidelines provided within the module site. If

after reviewing the information students remain uncertain in regards to requirements they are

requested to make a time to see the Clinical Placement Office for assistance.

Tuberculosis Screening (TB) – All students are required to complete a NSW Ministry of Health TB

Screening form at the commencement of each year prior to undertaking any Clinical Placements.

The information provided on the form will be used to determine if a student requires tuberculin skin

testing (TST). TST screening is required if a person was born in or has resided for more than three

months in a high incidence country. All students are required to complete a TB screening form

provided on the HNE ClinConnect website. Once the form is completed and submitted Students and

the Clinical Placement Office will be advised by the ClinConnect team if they require TST screening.

Students advised to attend screening will need to attend the UNE Medical Centre clinic for further

referrals to occur. The UNE Medical Centre will advise the Clinical Placement Office and students of

the date and time of the skin testing. Please note that off campus students will need to make their

own TST screening arrangements via their local GP or staff health unit if required.

We recommend you make several photocopies of your vaccination documentation in case

you misplace the original.

National Criminal History Check:

All students are required to undergo a National Criminal History Record Check before undertaking

Clinical Placement. This is a requirement of NSW Ministry of Health and is mandatory for all

personnel (including students on placement) practicing in NSW hospitals and health care facilities.

Absolute confidentiality is assured in the conduct of these checks.

Students must have a current (expires 3 years from date of issue) National Criminal History Check

and international students must also have an International Police Check or Statutory declaration.

Regardless of how it is issued, a valid National Criminal History Check must comply with the

following requirements:

It must be from a an approved broker, (as listed on the website) or an Australian State

NSW Police or Territory Police Force or the Australian Federal Police, and

It must state that it is a National or Australia wide check, and

It must include the student's full name and their date of birth, and

It must not have any offences listed (students with criminal history must provide a Clinical

Placement Authority Card (CPAC) or conditional letter from the Employment Screening and

Review Unit, NSW HealthShare), AND

The name on the Police Certificate must be the same name as on the Student's ID card.

Students are reminded that the National Criminal History Check is only valid for 3 years from the

date of issue.

If a student’s National Criminal History Check shows any offences or pending charges students will

be required by the NSW Ministry of Health to undertake a Risk Assessment.

All students must take their original Certificate with them on each Hospital Clinical

Placement. Failure to present your original document may result in the health facility denying

your placement.

If students have any questions or concerns relating to immunisation or National Criminal Record

UNE Placement Requirements

In addition to the above, students must meet the following UNE mandatory requirements by the end

of the first Trimester of Study.

EXPECTATIONS WHILE ON PLACEMENT

What the Supervisor expects from you? The Clinical Placement Office will provide you with contact details for each placement supervisor

and advise you of a suitable time frame to call/meet with the placement supervisor prior to the

commencement of the placement. You are required to make contact with the Placement Supervisor

within the advised time frame in order to confirm the following placement details:

Placement date – start and finish;

Placement physical address and contact details;

Placement schedule – days, start and finish times;

Allocated break times;

Personal hygiene, dress standards and grooming – i.e clothing, footwear, jewelry, hair, etc.

You will be required to wear a UNE Exercise and Sports Science practicum shirt.

Time and place of initial meeting at the start of placement;

Additional paperwork or reading requirements; and

Expected exposure, duties and responsibilities – you should ask the supervisor whether

they have any orientation documents for students, what they expect from you in relation to

interactions with clients and practicum progression from observation of practitioners to

independent (supervised) face-to-face exercise delivery

You are also responsible for the following: The submission of all mandatory documentation onto InPlace prior to commencement of

placement. **Please note that if you are planning on completing a clinical placement in a

Hospital setting that you must complete any mandatory requirements as per the Health

requirements of that State/Territory.

Ensuring that you complete ALL mandatory placement hours within the ascribed period

(Trimester 2, July to October)

Maintaining a daily log of all placement hours via the logbook templates provided

The completion of any required reading/familiarisation tasks set out by the placement facility

prior to commencing placement e.g. ClinConnect requirements

All expenses associated with the placement (for example travel, accommodation and meal

costs

Ensuring confidentiality of information with respect to client and professional placement

facility records

Informing the placement supervisor if you feel that adequate guidance and/or opportunities

for development are not being provided or you are unable to follow the professional

placement supervisor’s instructions

Notifying the placement supervisor if you expect to be late to the placement site throughout

the placement.

Notifying the placement supervisor if you are unwell during the placement. In the case of

illness that extends over a period of time, please notify the Clinical Placement Office as soon

as possible. The Clinical Placement Office will work with the placement supervisor to identify

if there is scope to make up for the missed hours/days.

Displaying enthusiasm and willingness to assist and be receptive to professional advice while

undertaking professional placement.

Maintaining open communication with the placement supervisor and Clinical Placement

Office with respect to placement expectations and outcomes.


Seeking information and feedback from the placement supervisor to assist with learning

Ensuring the placement supervisor completes the Supervisor Feedback Report and that the

report is forwarded to the Clinical Placement Office at the midway and final point of each

placement; and

Completing a Site Feedback Report at completion of all placements and forwarding to the

Clinical Placement Office by end of examination period Trimester 2.

Insurance and UNE Agreement All students on professional placement are covered by insurance. UNE covers full public risk and

professional indemnity insurance in relation to acts and omissions of students undertaken as part of

their university program, and university staff while acting for and on behalf of UNE.

A student placement agreement must be signed by representatives of both UNE and the placement

facility, prior to the commencement of any placement activity associated with the facility. The Clinical

Placement Office will ensure that a UNE Placement Agreement is completed prior to your placement.


GUIDELINES FOR PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT

The Clinical Placement Coordinator is responsible for: Ensuring that the student has submitted all appropriate documentation prior to commencing

professional placement.

Ensuring that a student professional placement agreement, signed by representatives of both

UNE and the placement facility, is in place prior to the commencement of any placement

activity associated with the facility.

Liaising with placement facilities in order to schedule appropriate professional placement

dates.

Sourcing appropriate placement facilities for the student.

The allocation of an appropriate student to a placement agency.

Providing support to the student and the placement supervisor with respect to professional

placement expectations.

Liaising with the student and placement supervisor with respect to matters of grievance

and/or conflict.

The compilation and maintenance of records associated with placement facility contacts,

student placement allocations and hours and assessment items.

Collation of placement supervisor feedback regarding the student’s performance during the

professional placement.

Random review of student activities at the placement facility during the allocated placement,

with the permission of the placement supervisor prior to the visit.

The Clinical Placement Educator is responsible for: Sourcing appropriate placement facilities for the student.

Liaising with professional placement facilities in order to schedule appropriate professional

placement dates.

Providing support to the student and the placement supervisor with respect to professional

placement expectations.

Liaising with the student and placement supervisor with respect to matters of grievance

and/or conflict.

The compilation and maintenance of records associated with placement facility contacts,

student placement allocations and hours and assessment items.

Random review of student activities at the placement facility during the allocated professional

placement, with the permission of the placement supervisor prior to the visit.

Accountability Whilst on Placement, you are directly accountable to the Clinical Placement Office and must be

under the supervision of a suitably qualified Supervisor as per ESSA requirements.

If any problem arises, you should refer the matter to the Clinical Placement Office. If the Clinical

Placement Team are not available, problems should be referred to the Course Coordinator.

The Clinical Placement Coordinator or Clinical Placement Educator must be notified if the normal

course of a Placement is altered in any way or if there is any problem during your Placement.


PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT DURING PLACEMENTS

Professional Conduct During the placement experience you are expected to work in a professional manner and to uphold

the standards required. You are also ambassadors for UNE and a guest in health care facilities, as

such you must be aware of and display an appropriate professional appearance, attitude and

conduct during each clinical placement.

NSW Ministry of Health requires that you have read the NSW Ministry of Health Code of Conduct

and signed a form confirming that you have read, understood and will comply with the NSW Ministry

of Health Code of Conduct.

Code of Conduct You are required to comply with The University of New England Act of 1993 and with the University of

New England Rules. Unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated during your Clinical Placement and may

result in failure of the clinical component of your unit.

Student presentation Whilst on practicum you will be required to wear a UNE Exercise and Sport Science Practicum

shirt. You will be required to comply with the UNE code of conduct and any specifics indicated by

the placement site.

Working while on placement Due to professional and ethical responsibility, you are expected to be well prepared for placement,

and have an obligation to be well rested prior to your placement. Being employed full or part time

during the placement period may not allow you to meet these obligations as there are work health

and safety implications associated with this practice.

If you are working full or part time hours whilst attending placement, you may be placing yourself at

risk under work health and safety legislation and may also be at high risk in the event of any litigation

from adverse outcomes. You are expected to discuss any external work/family commitments that

may affect your placement with the Clinical Placement Office and your placement supervisor.

Confidentiality Students are not permitted to discuss confidential matters by any means including via Facebook,

Twitter or other social sites.

You have a legal and moral obligation to maintain confidentiality. The legal and ethical

responsibilities to ensure privacy and confidentiality for patient/clients and agencies begins now and

is expected to remain throughout your professional life.

Punctuality You are required to notify the Clinical Placement Staff and the clinical placement site where you are rostered if you expect to be late for any shift. Being punctual is considered an important element of a satisfactory practical evaluation and demonstrates professionalism.

If you are late more than once during a Clinical Placement without an acceptable justification you will be asked to "show cause" as to why you should not be withdrawn from the placement.

Mobile Phones and other Electronic Devices You are not permitted to carry a mobile phone or other electronic devices (such as iPods) with you during clinical placement. You may access these devices whilst on a designated break time only. If it is imperative that you be reachable by mobile phone (emergency only) you must gain permission from the Clinical Partner or Facilitator to carry it on you.

Illness You are not able to participate in your clinical practice if you are unwell. If you experience illness during

your scheduled clinical placement, you must advise the Clinical Placement Office and must seek

appropriate health care. For any days absent due to illness you will be required to provide a medical

certificate.

If you are absent for more than one day during clinical placement, you will be required to make up

the time. Failure to provide a medical certificate will result in you having to make up time missed no

matter the amount of time absent from placement. Medical Certificates must be from a medical

doctor.

You are reminded that it is a requirement that a copy of the Medical Certificate is sent to the Clinical

Placement Office.

In the case of long-term acute or chronic illness or other such cause (including pregnancy) you will

be required to have a Medical Practitioner complete a Fitness for Practice certificate clearing you to

undertake clinical placement.

Leave of Absence If you require leave during your placement for compassionate leave or some other emergency, you

must advise the Clinical Placement Coordinator. If days missed are not made up before the end of

the placement, a special "Make-Up" placement will need to be organised and Special Extension of

Time (SET) application submitted as per the UNE Assessment Policy. In the normal course of events,

students are prohibited from working in excess of seven days straight during any one placement. If

you believe that this will be necessary to complete your placement, you will need to obtain permission

from the Clinical Placement Office.


WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY During Clinical Placements and during all class and laboratory sessions you are obliged to work

under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2000 to facilitate and uphold health and safety. As a

student attending Clinical Placement within health care facilities and during clinical laboratory

sessions on campus you are expected to;-

Work safely at all times within the work environment

Cooperate and follow reasonable instructions

Wear, use and care for protective equipment where provided

Not willfully endanger the safety of yourself or others

Refer to policy/procedure manuals for guidance

Injuries and Accidents If students are injured during their placement they must follow the procedures set by the Health

Facility in which they are located. Report the injury immediately to the Clinical Placement Office Staff.

If an injury is received, students should complete the health facility incident report. Any incident report

completed during the placement should be copied and provided to the Clinical Placement Office

Staff, so it can go on record for UNE Work Health and Safety.
