AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Program Structure and Content

Double Majors

On graduation, our students will acquire a broad set of knowledge and skills that makes them highly employable across a wide range of fields. The Bachelor of Commerce degree consists of 12 units and maybe completed in 16 months spread over 4 academic trimesters. Each unit is supported with 39 contact hours conducted on Monday to Friday, 5 times a week.

The student is exposed to the issue of information gap that exists between the borrower and the lender and the need to design contracts that reveal and monitor the quality of the borrower. The program will consider the nature and legal implications of the banker-customer relationship. The high debt that financial institutions have in their capital structure, the interest sensitivity of their assets and the liquidity that depositors demand result in unique interest, credit and liquidity risk management issues. Government regulation and directives will also be discussed. These aspects of banking are the focus of the banking degree. The program is designed to develop your career in the financial institutions.

Banking

Students doing the finance major will cover a broad range of areas in corporate finance, treasury management, investment analysis and international finance. These are designed to equip them with the necessary skills to obtain employment in such areas as stockbroking, insurance and banking, as well as preparing them with the skills for careers in finance in public and private sector organisations. Many issues related to the corporate financial manager will be examined including capital investment decisions, cost of capital, sources of funds, dividend policy, working capital management, efficient capital markets, portfolio management, the use of options, futures, forward exchange contracts and other derivative financial instruments. You will also receive an introduction to international finance.

Marketing is an essential role in all organisations and it identifies customer needs and wants and determines which target markets the organisation can best serve and manage the appropriate products, services and strategies to satisfy the market. In essence, marketing is about influencing your perceptions to make you buy a product or service. The program provides students with an understanding of marketing theory by practical applications of the marketing exchange processes using product development and planning, pricing strategies, integrated marketing communications and distribution channel management.

Program Management

The BCom program will be managed by a professional program management team which shall ensure that in addition to seminars and lectures, students will receive support on important areas such as the service of a program manager/executive, regular program newsletters (updates) via email, academic support system via email/Internet, textbooks, study notes, study group formation, Kaplan City Campus library membership, assignment and examination management, student liaison and organisation, etc.The Finance and Banking major combination also covers the theory

and techniques underlying financial management and gives students a working knowledge of the banking and financial system, financial markets and institutions and developments in the financial sector. Graduates gain employment as bankers, financial analysts, merchant bankers or stockbrokers.

This Finance and Marketing course equip students with strong marketing and communication skills, how to interpret marketing and financial data, and to follow market trends. Knowledge and skills in marketing and finance will help to drive the consumer economy, determine which products will meet the consumer's needs, when these products should be released and how they should be promoted in order to maximise profits. Graduates gain employment as brand managers, direct marketers, electronic marketers, financial analysts, financial planners, futures traders, market researchers, marketing managers, product managers, stockbrokers and treasurers.

This Finance and Management double major provides students with the theoretical and technical skills required in the management area of the banking and finance industry. Students cover the key challenges facing practising managers and develop skills in communication, program solving, planning, organising, managing change and working cooperatively. Graduates gain employment as financial analysts, financial planners, futures traders, general managers, international financers, investment and retirement consultants, portfolio analysts, stockbrokers or treasurers.

Assessment Scheme

Each unit will be assessed by class participation, written assignments, project and/or examination. Examinations will normally be held after office hours or on weekends.

All lecturers hold a master degree and/or PhD qualification with at least 2 years' teaching experience and good track records.

A typical trimester is a 4-month period covering 3 units of study. 3 units per trimester is the equivalent of a full-time study load.

Students who successfully complete the program will be awarded the prestigious Bachelor of Commerce. The degree will be the same as that awarded to on-campus students of the university. Graduates will be allowed to use the title BCom (Murdoch) after their names. Presentation ceremonies are held yearly in Singapore and graduation twice a year in Perth. Graduates are encouraged to a t t end the deg ree convocation in Perth with their families whenever possible.

Finance LawThis unit will examine a number of areas of particular relevance to finance and banking students. Lectures will be drawn from a selection of the following topics like key Australian financial system regulators; fundraising by issue and sale of securities; managed investment schemes; loan finance; debenture and note finance; takeovers; regulation of financial services and markets; the financial services licensee/client relationship.

Corporate Finance The main objective of this unit is to develop a basic knowledge of finance, especially in relation to the investment decisions for the corporate financial manager. Major topics are the evaluation and selection of investment projects; introduction to the capital asset pricing model; dividend policy and capital structure; and working capital management.

Treasury ManagementThe unit provides an introduction to fundamental concepts associated with the management of risk within an institution. Broadly, it will cover the basic financial engineering tools, the yield curve and the pricing of fixed income instruments. Specific instruments including futures, Forward Rate Agreements (FRAs), options and swaps will be discussed in detail. The unit will also consider the trading environment, focusing on market structures and function.

Investment AnalysisThe main objective of this unit is to examine the return-risk profile of an individual security and the construction of optimal investment portfolios. The unit will examine the mean-variance portfolio theory, simplification to the portfolio selection process, efficient market hypothesis, capital asset pricing model, and empirical tests of equilibrium models. In addition, arbitrage pricing models, technical analysis and portfolio performance will be examined.

International FinanceTopics are foreign exchange markets, futures, options, forward markets and currency swaps, determination of exchange rates, purchasing power parity, interest rate parity, hedging and the management of foreign exchange risk, asset and liability management for the multinational corporation, international portfolio investment.

Derivative Securities This unit is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the features and uses of the major derivative instruments; an understanding of how the major derivative instruments are valued and an introduction to the features of exotic derivative instruments. Alternatives to the Black-Scholes models, credit risk derivatives and advanced models in interest rate derivatives will also be examined. Work will be highly theoretical and mathematical, and a high standard is expected.

International Financial Markets and InstitutionsThis unit analyses the operations of national money markets and the institutions therein. Topics are the main financial intermediaries, the role of the reserve bank, the determination of interest rates and the economic analysis of insurance. Other areas analysed include the superannuation industry, the share market and issues in contemporary monetary theory and policy.

Commercial BankingOverview of functions and objectives of commercial banking, assets, liability and liquidity management; interest rate management and bank lending instruments will be covered in the course. Derivative securities salient to financial intermediation, loan commitments and securitisation will also be examined.

Credit and Lending DecisionsThe focus of this unit is the key functions of the bank with particular emphasis on the management of lending and credit assessment. Topics include an overview of credit risk, the credit decision, management of problem loans and credit policy formulation and implementation. In addition, current credit techniques including credit scoring models and Value At Risk (VAR) will be introduced.

Marketing and Advertising Law Legal literacy in the laws regulating the marketing and advertising of goods and services in Australia. The focus is on common legal issues faced by marketers and advertisers involved in the sale and promotion of products and services. Students acquire sufficient legal knowledge to achieve total quality management. Topics include intellectual property in marketing (patents, trade secrets, copyright, designs, trademarks), passing off actions, product labels and packaging, product liability, advertising law, promotions, and if time allows, competition law.

Marketing ManagementThis unit is designed to provide an overview of marketing management with insights into market development principles, tools, and planning processes. A 'live' case study gives students experiences as marketing planners, providing an understanding of the complexities of the process. It has a strong applied focus utilising sound theoretical concepts to endorse and develop a critical approach to real-life commercial situations. The unit also develops a student's ability to critically evaluate and decide between choices based on solid justifications.

Consumer BehaviourThis unit provides the fundamental skills you need to understand how and why consumers make decisions, how they purchase and use products, and how eventually they dispose of those products. It focuses on the differences of consumer behaviour in South-East Asia and the important differences in decision-making styles that occur in major countries within the region. It examines ethical and social justice issues of consumerism and the importance of an understanding of consumer behaviour for non-profit organisations.

International MarketingThis unit teaches the performance of the marketing tasks across international boundaries, a necessary way of life for firms that wish to survive and grow in the dynamic global economy. The basic approach and principles are similar to domestic marketing. Students will be introduced to the contemporary issues associated with international marketing; particularly where they differ from domestic marketing. The unit focuses on the key issues that marketers need to assess when considering a move into an overseas market.

Marketing Research and Analysis This unit is designed to introduce the student to marketing research. The purpose is to provide an overview of the marketing research process and its basis in the scientific method, as well as to develop knowledge in the principles of research design, data collection, statistical analysis and report preparation. The unit examines recent developments in online research methods and the use of database marketing. Ethical issues of research are also addressed, as well as difficulties involved in cross-cultural research.

Services MarketingThe learning objectives of this unit are based on analysing the differences between services and tangible goods and the marketing implications of those differences. The development of marketing strategies for service organisations will be critically examined and will include conducting a satisfaction audit of selected service organisations. The importance of services marketing in both service and manufacturing industries will be analysed together with customer service, relationship marketing and service quality concepts.

Organisational Theory and BehaviourThis unit provides a basic understanding of individual and group behaviour in organisations, as well as exploring some organisational theories and management processes. Topics include individual dimensions of behaviour - personality, perception and learning, communication and motivation; groups and interpersonal influence - structure, values, interaction and leadership; and organisational issues such as structure, processes, design and decision making; organisational change and development.

Workplace LawThis unit examines the legal relationship between an employer and employee. It begins with a study of the individual contract of employment focusing on the rights and duties of employers and employees, and then proceeds to take an overview of Australian workplace law. A particular interest is taken in the legislated standards, regulation of collective bargaining, industrial action, dismissal and discrimination. This unit is part of the human resource management and management majors and minors.

Organisational Development and Human Resources ManagementThis unit aims to explore the choices organisations have for assisting employees to work effectively and adapt to change. The unit introduces the role of Human Resource Management (HRM) to organisation development. Individual, team, HRM and strategic concepts are linked to the strategies and processes organisations and individuals use to proactively promote organisational citizenship throughout change.

Strategic ManagementThis is a capstone unit which is aimed at preparing students to think strategically, and to look at all the issues and problems affecting the strategic initiatives of an organisation, from a total corporate perspective. The unit provides a conceptual framework of corporate strategy and policy formulation, and integrates this into key functional areas for business including decision-making, organisational learning, technology management, innovation, knowledge management, marketing, finance and human resource management.

Knowledge and Organisational LearningThe management of information and knowledge and its role in organisation are widely recognised as important elements contributing to international competitiveness in the new economy. This unit examines how the concepts of information and knowledge assist in the understanding of organisational processes, especially organisational learning. Topics examined include economic development; the policy process; electronic business and governance; organisational memory; and decision-making and strategy.

International Management This unit aims to provide a framework for the analysis of problems and issues in managing an international business. The focus is on contemporary worldwide issues of competitiveness and how these are influenced by the cultural, political and economic environments. Topics include cross-cultural management issues; international strategic planning; international organisational structures; cross-cultural communication, decision-making, motivation and leadership; expatriation and repatriation of managers; and international human resource management and labour relations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & FEE SCHEDULE

Entry Requirements

This advanced standing BCom program accepts a wide range of advanced standing qualifications. These include:

• A recognised polytechnic diploma.• Private diploma/advanced diploma in business related fields.• Private diploma/advanced diploma in non-business related fields

will be considered on a case-by-case basis.• Applicants admitted to the BCom program may be required to

undertake additional courses in order to achieve full advanced standing. The final decision rests with Murdoch University.

• Applicants are required to meet Murdoch University english language requirement.

The application form needs to be completed by the applicant listing their qualifications, employment experience and major work achievements.

Proof of the applicant’s qualifications (a certified copy of the official transcript is acceptable), a resume and the first instalment must also be included.

Please note that applications are not complete without all the items above.

As the program involves regular use of Internet, email etc., students must possess or have convenient access to a personal computer with at least Windows 95 and an Internet connection to enable them to access materials electronically from the university and to participate in appropriate pedagogic interaction.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore requires all foreign students to hold a valid student pass for their full-time studies in Singapore. A minimum of 90% attendance must be attained. In order to protect the interest of foreign students, regulatory body Council of Private Education (CPE) requires all program fees be covered by fees protection scheme.

Selection

Applications are reviewed by Murdoch University staff. Selection involves consideration of:

• Motivation to undertake the BCom program and potential to benefit from the program.

• Appropriateness of work experience, particularly the length, level and responsibilities of positions held (including current position).

• Quality of academic record.• Demonstrated personal qualities appropriate for managers and

How to ApplyApplication and Selection

Considerable care is taken by Kaplan Higher Education Academy in the selection of students. It normally takes about 3 weeks to process each application. Therefore, it is advisable for foreign students to apply for admission at least 6 weeks before the start of each intake.
