This program aims to produce graduates of the highest academic standards, who can progress to veterinary practice and to further studies in veterinary specialities. Graduates will be uniquely qualified in the fields of rural/remote and tropical veterinary practice.

Overview

James Cook University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree course is a 5 year undergraduate course and is primarily for school leavers (i.e. applicants who have completed Year 12 or equivalent in the last two years). A limited number of places may be available for non-school leavers.

Facilities on the Townsville campus include teaching laboratories, a range of livestock paddocks and yards, small animal pens and access to JCU’s own cattle station at nearby Charters Towers, Fletcherview. Summary of selection process

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Academic performance in Year 12 studies or insubsequent tertiary studies as provided through QTAC

• Evaluation of the written component of the application form

• Rural and remote or Indigenous background

A limited number of places are allocated to non Year 12 applicants. Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of their written application and their most recent GPA (Grade Point Average).

In 2021, the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences has available approximately 80 places in the first year of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree.

INFORMATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT STUDYING YEAR 12 OR EQUIVALENT THIS YEAR

The most recent course GPS (Grade Point Average) score will be used to rank applicants who have commenced or completed tertiary studies. While an applicant’s most recent GPA is given the most weight, the applicant’s complete academic profile as supplied by QTAC may be considered. An applicant’s other studies/qualifications that do not generate a GPA score will not be considered.

Graduate applicants with a related background may be considered for entry into the Bachelor of Veterinary Science beyond Year 1 level, subject to the academic performance of the recent qualification.

How do I apply?

The Veterinary Science application process has two distinct stages. You will need to submit an application directly to James Cook University (by filling in the application form) AND apply online through QTAC.

INFORMATION FOR THOSE NEW ZEALAND APPLICANTS STUDYING NCEA THIS YEAR

New Zealand students studying and completing the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) in 2020 are unlikely to receive their NCEA results early enough to be considered for entry to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science at JCU in 2021. Due to the expected timing of the release of the NCEA results, students currently studying and completing the NCEA are encouraged to apply to JCU in 2021, for the 2022 entry for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS

Offers of a place in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree are made by QTAC. QTAC will make an offer for the highest preference for which you qualify. Successful applicants are required to follow the QTAC procedure for acceptance of a place in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.

UNSUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS

An applicant who has been unsuccessful in obtaining a place in the James Cook University Bachelor of Veterinary Science, but who is strongly motivated towards a career in the veterinary science field, might consider undertaking a bachelor degree in medical laboratory science, biomedical science or one of the other health or science degrees offered at JCU.

Unsuccessful applicants considering undertaking studies in one of the above degrees with a view to eventual acceptance into the veterinary science degree should be aware that the number of places available for non-school leaver entry into the James Cook University Bachelor of Veterinary Science is limited and it would be inappropriate and most unwise for an unsuccessful applicant to see that eventual outcome as anything other than a possibility.

Pre-requisites

For entry into James Cook University’s Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree, applicants must have successfully completed four semesters at Year 12 level and achieved an exit level of at least Sound Achievement in English (Units 3/4, C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3/4, C) and Chemistry (Units 3/4, C), the study of Biology is highly desirable.

Students must provide evidence of being immune to Q Fever prior to commencement of Week 3 of the first Teaching Period. Students who are not immune to Q Fever will not be permitted on-site at some facilities and consequently this may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the degree as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirements by Week 3 of the first Teaching Period, their enrolment will be terminated.
