TALK ABOUT IT!

About This Book

Children remember Bible lessons that engage their hearts, minds, and busy hands. Each book in New Testament Take-Home Books that Move! is interactive and creative. The books can be used to supplement or enhance your Bible story lessons. New Testament scriptures are listed in the Table of Contents (page 3) and each activity includes a recommended Bible reading. Some of the books encourage a deep look into the Bible story, while others offer a general overview. As children make interactive books, then share them later with their families, they can reflect on God’s Word and make connections to their own lives.

After working with children for more than 20 years as an elementary school teacher, reading specialist, Sunday school teacher, and VBS director, I wanted to create a teaching resource that not only encourages Bible study and discussion, but results in a delightful hand-craftedbook that children will take home and share with their families. As the wife of a pastor and mother to four children, I know that each child develops his own unique relationship with Christ. I hope these books will give them guidance, knowledge, and encouragement as they become confident followers of Christ.

“Read About It!” Look for this symbol with each lesson. There, you’ll find

the Scripture reference for each Take-Home book.

“Talk About It!” Look for this symbol for teaching

tips and talking points to use while children are constructing the books.

How to Use This Book

Most of the book projects require a few common materials such as crayons, stapler, photocopier, or paper hole punch. Directions for each book include a materials list. Most of the books are easy for children to make. Some are more challenging and need extra hands to help complete them.

Materials listed are enough for one child. For a class, multiply the amount shown by the number of children in your group. If a book requires materials that will need to be gathered ahead of time, this will be noted in the introduction to each book. Some books, such as the marbleized cover book (page 34), the hardcover book (page 41), and the scented- heart wheel book (page 59), require planning and extra time. I encourage you to give them a try. Children will love doing something new and different!

Most of the take-home books include opportunities to respond to the Bible by writing short words, phrases, or occasionally a few sentences. Allow younger children to copy text from a board when the written responses are more complicated than they are ready for. You might consider asking older children to buddy up with younger children for more challenging books, such as those requiring yarn tying, movable pieces, or hard covers.

Patterns for making your own take-home books based on any Bible story can be found on pages 125–128.

I pray that you and the children you are blessed to work with will enjoy creating these take-home books and that the Word contained in them will bless children’s lives and move them closer to God.

Techniques for Fun and Simple Books

Yarn-Tied BooksAny Bible story can be made into a yarn-tied book. See “Young Jesus at the Temple” yarn-tied book on page 22.1. Write a story.2. Make three hole punches through the

cover and book pages.3. Thread yarn through the holes as

shown below.

Paper Bag BooksSee an example of a paper bag book on page 71 (“No! No! No!”).1. Make a mini-book about a Bible story

character (see page 127).2. Draw and cut out a head, body, and

arms for your Bible story character to fit on a lunch-sized paper bag.

3. Lay the paper bag on the table with the folded bottom flap at the top facing you.

4. Glue the head onto the bottom flap. 5. Glue the body below the flap. Glue the

arms onto the body. 6. Cut out the mini-book. Staple the book

pages and glue the bottom page of the mini-book onto the puppet’s body.

Flap BooksThese books add an element of surprise to a story. As in the “Knock, Knock” take-home book on page 113, the edge of a door, window, or any object can be glued over an illustration to create a flap.

Simple Pop-Up BooksSee an example of a pop-up book on page 14 (“Don’t Be Afraid!”).1. Cut a 1" x 5" (2.5 cm x 13 cm) strip of

paper. Accordion-fold the strip.2. Draw and cut out a character or object

to glue to one end of the strip.3. Glue the other end of the folded strip

to your Bible story illustration. When the page is opened, the character or object will pop from the page.

A successful way to stimulate interest in New Testament Bible stories is to involve children in book-making activities. Use these simple activities to create books about any Bible story. You can also use the patterns on pages 125–128 to make your own take-home books.
