What will I study?

You will follow a number of strands throughout yourprogramme:

• Academic and Professional Development - you willlearn how to study effectively and take ownershipof your own development. You will focus on howchildren develop and learn and acquire planning,teaching and assessment skills to give you theopportunity to become an outstanding classroomteacher;

• The Curriculum - you will develop your ownknowledge of all the National Curriculum subjectsand study how children learn them. You will explorea range of teaching methods so that you canprovide stimulating, imaginative and effectivelearning experiences for children;

• Specialism - you will choose a major specialistsubject within primary education and through yourstudies develop your knowledge and understandingof this subject, as well as your skills as a teacher ofthis subject. You can currently choose from:English, Mathematics, Modern Languages orScience. In addition, you will also study a minorspecialism to strengthen your portfolio and prepareyou for leading aspects of provision within primaryschools. There is a broad range of minor subjectsavailable, including areas such as Art, DesignTechnology, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS),English as an Additional Language (EAL),Geography, History, Learning Outside theClassroom, Modern Languages, Music, PhysicalEducation (PE), Religious Education (RE), SpecialEducational Needs and Disabilities (SEN/D);

• Professional Practice - you will spend a significantamount of time undertaking professional practiceplacements in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 settings.

How will I study?

Your learning experience will include lectures, seminargroups and independent study supported by online anddistance learning materials. Your programme will alsocomprise significant time in a range of schools being

trained by expert teachers with the support of theUniversity. During your Professional Practice you willprogress from teaching small groups, usually with apartner, to teaching a full class on your own as youbecome more confident in the classroom. There may beopportunities to gain additional experiences in a widerange of settings, including nurseries, museums and artgalleries.

Lectures and seminars will be underpinned with currentresearch and will provide the opportunity to exploreaspects of teaching and learning with the support ofexpert practitioners. Your personal tutor and your trainedschool mentors will support you, train you and help you tomonitor and plan your own progress.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment strategies will include portfolios ofschool-based work, written assignments, oralpresentations, and feedback on your professionalpractice. You will be given clear assessment criteria andconstructive feedback.

There are no formal written examinations as part of thecurrent assessment methods on this programme.

You will be taught in University and on professionalpractice in schools by a range of highly qualified andexperienced teachers and tutors who are dedicated toexcellence in primary education and who will model highquality practice to enable you to develop your ownteaching style.

Year 1

PED1012: Partnership Led Curriculum - Foundation Subjects (20 credits)Partnership Led Curriculum - Foundation Subjects develops subject specific knowledge whilst reflecting on a broadrange of pedagogical possibilities. Sessions will involve a blend between subjects, for example History and Art orReligious Education and Music. This will involve a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and school-ledexperiences. A creative and experiential approach to learning will be applied and may include a modelled field trip, atrainee conference or an alternative initiative. The aim is to enhance your understanding of the value of a richcurriculum that supports children's entitlement to social, physical, moral, spiritual, cultural, and aestheticdevelopment.

PED1013: Minor Specialism (20 credits)Minor Specialism seeks to develop your knowledge and understanding of a specific subject of personal interest. Youwill be able to choose from Art; Design Technology; Early Years Foundation Stage; English as an Additional Language;Geography; History; Learning Outside The Classroom; Music; Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education;Physical Education; Religious Education; and Special Education Needs and Disabilities.

PED1015: Academic and Professional Development 1 (20 credits)Academic and Professional Development 1 introduces you to the programme's approach to your academic, personaland professional development. You will be immersed in key theories related to children's development and begin todevelop your knowledge and understanding of learning and teaching within a primary context.

PED1016: Academic and Professional Development 2 (20 credits)Academic and Professional Development 2 introduces you to further aspects of academic, personal and professionaldevelopment. The module will also enable you to begin to build the professional skills, knowledge, understanding,attitudes and values required by the Teachers' Standards.

PED1017: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - English and Computing (20 credits)Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - English and Computing introduces you to the English and Computing elements ofthe primary curriculum and will outline the evidence-based subject knowledge that underpins effective teaching,learning and assessment in these subjects. The module will cover the separate strands of the English curriculum, i.e.reading, writing and spoken language, as well as the shift in the primary Computing curriculum from ICT skills tocomputer science.

PED1018: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - Mathematics and Science (20 credits)Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - Mathematics and Science introduces you to the Mathematics andScience elements of the primary curriculum and will outline the evidence-based subject knowledge that underpinseffective teaching, learning and assessment in these subjects. You will begin to consider how children might beeffectively supported by their teacher to learn the skills, knowledge and understanding required for successfulprogress in Mathematics and Science.

PED1111: Primary Professional Practice - Phase 1A (20 credits)Primary Professional Practice - Phase 1A is the first of three assessed professional practice modules and will beundertaken in a Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 classroom. You will develop your approach to all aspects of the role of the

PED2020: Academic and Professional Development 4 (20 credits)Academic and Professional Development 4 continues to enhance your personal and professional development,revisiting further aspects of pedagogy to consolidate and extend your knowledge, understanding and skills whilecontinuing to develop your personal and academic study skills. You will also critically evaluate the needs of theindividual child, particularly in relation to special educational needs and disability, as well as English as an additionallanguage (EAL), and consider approaches which are designed to ensure the inclusion of all learners.

PED2021: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - English and Computing (20 credits)Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - English and Computing is designed to further enhance your knowledge andunderstanding of the primary curriculum with a particular focus on advancing your subject knowledge in English andComputing.

PED2022: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - Mathematics and Science (20 credits)Curriculum, Teaching and Learning - Mathematics and Science is designed to further enhance your knowledge andunderstanding of the primary curriculum with a particular focus on advancing your subject knowledge inMathematics and Science.

PED2013: Mathematics Specialist Subject (20 credits)Mathematics Specialist Subject enables you to develop a strong understanding of children's development and learningwhich will underpin successful teaching and curriculum development in schools. The module will develop your abilityto share your knowledge with colleagues, which you will need to do as a potential curriculum leader. You will alsoacquire appropriate subject knowledge to inform planning and an awareness of the research underpinning differentpedagogic approaches and models of practice to inspire passion and enthusiasm for the subject.

PED3010: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (40 credits)Curriculum, Teaching and Learning enhances your personal and professional development, revisiting aspects ofpedagogy to consolidate and extend your knowledge, understanding and skills while continuing to develop yourpersonal and academic study skills. You will continue to refine your knowledge and understanding of the primarycurriculum with a particular focus on developing subject knowledge for English, Mathematics, Science, and Technologyfor Teaching and Learning (TTL).

PED3011: Developing the Reflective Practitioner (40 credits)Developing the Reflective Practitioner enables you to understand the reflective practice cycle (Pollard, 2010) and toengage with this to allow you to develop as a reflective practitioner. The module will develop your critical analysis skillsthrough facilitating opportunities for you to examine relevant academic texts associated with reflective practice. Youwill develop your understanding of the importance of analysing critical incidents with a view to informing practice,building on your reflective writing skills so that you can compose a critique of your own professional development,identifying actions for development and evaluating progress.

PED3016: Minor Specialism (10 credits)Minor Specialism develops and reflect upon subject specific knowledge and the application of this knowledge in aprofessional context for your minor subject specialism. This may involve a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops

PED3333: Primary Professional Practice - Phase 2 (40 credits)Primary Professional Practice - Phase 2 is the third of three assessed professional practice modules and will beundertaken in a Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 classroom. You will develop your approaches to all aspects of the role of theteacher and will lead the teaching and learning within the class for 80% of the planned timetable. You will undertake arange of training experiences linked to the requirements of the placement and your own particular needs. Yourindividual development plan will be reviewed and refined as appropriate and used as the basis for establishing a CareerEntry and Development Profile.

You will study one of the following modules based on your choice of major subject specialism.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

What are my career prospects?

Our graduates obtain work in schools across the UK andabroad and we offer excellent support to help you gain afirst post as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). Yourprogramme will prepare you to teach in Key Stage 1 and 2in primary schools and support you in developing strong

subject knowledge and a comprehensive understandingof primary education.

Before the end of your degree you will need to completea Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) whichacts as a useful bridge between your initial teachertraining programme and your first teaching post.

Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.Tuition fees for international students enrolling on theprogramme in academic year 2020/21 are £12,250 perannum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.

Financial Support

Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining thisundergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loanfrom the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees.UK and EU students enrolling on the programme mayalso be eligible to apply for additional funding to helpwith living costs.
