APPLICATIONANDADMISSION-ANTHROPOLOGYHONOURSPROGRAMAcceptanceRequirements–HonoursStream:StudentsmaycompleteaDepartmentapplicationpackageforacceptanceintotheHonoursstreamuponsuccessfulcompletionof20coursesintheBachelorofArtsprogram.TheApplicationformandcurrentmruGradU8PDFmustbesubmitted.AnthropologyDisciplineGPARequirementsforEligibility:TobeadmittedintotheAnthropologyHonoursProgram,astudentmusthaveaGPAof3.00acrossthelast10coursescompleted.AnthropologyDisciplineGPARequirementsforContinuance:Students accepted into the Honours BA must maintain a term GPA of 3.00 in each semester.SubjecttoreviewbytheChair,studentsacceptedintoanHonoursprogramwhofailtomaintainaterm GPA of 3.00,will lose their place in the Honours program. ReviewandApprovalProcess:

1. Tenured/tenurable Anthropology faculty will meet to review applications and decidewhichstudentswillbeacceptedintotheHonoursProgram. Atthesemeetings,bothGPAandtheproposedthesistopicwillbeconsidered,withemphasisplacedonthefitbetweenthe projects proposed by the students and the research expertise and interests oftenured/tenurableAnthropologyfacultymembers.

2. TheAnthropologyCoordinator/ChairwillnotifysuccessfulapplicantsbyJune01.

3. The Department Chair will approve the applicants who are accepted into the program.ThosenotacceptedintotheHonoursprogramwillbenotifiedbytheChair.

4. Formal notification of acceptance into theHonours Programwill be forwarded from theDepartmentofSociologyandAnthropologytotheFacultyofArts,Dean’sOffice.

5. TheDean’sOfficewillnotifytheregistrartochangethestudent’sstatusto“Honours”.

6. Whenthischangeisreflectedinyourrecord,youarerequiredtoregisterfortheHonourscourse/s.


7. GRADUATIONEligibilitytoGraduateTobeeligibletograduatefromaMountRoyalprogram,astudentmusthavebeenofficiallyadmittedinto the program andmust normally complete at least 25% of the graduation requirements as astudentwithintheprogram,exceptwherewrittenapprovalhasbeengivenbythedean/directorofthefaculty/centre/school.TobeeligibletograduatewithaBachelorofArtswithaMajor,studentsmustsatisfactorilycompleteall the General Graduation Requirements for the BA with a Major as well as all the SpecificGraduationRequirementsfortheirMajorareaofstudy(seebelow).TobeeligibletograduatewithaBachelor of Arts with Honours, students must satisfactorily complete all the General GraduationRequirementsfortheBAwithHonoursaswellasalltheSpecificGraduationRequirementsfortheBAwithHonoursfortheirareaofstudy.StudentscompletingtheHonoursProgramwhohavefailedtosatisfyalltherequirementsforanHonoursdegreebutwhohavesatisfiedallrequirementsforaBAMajordegreeshallreceiveaBAMajordegreeupongraduation.StudentsmustfollowthegraduationapplicationprocedureoutlinedintherelevantMountRoyal Calendar. AREASOFEXPERTISEOFTENURED/TENURABLEANTHROPOLOGYFACULTYDr.AngelaBeattie isaculturalanthropologistwithexpertise inmusicandfanculture,medicalanthropology, anthropology of the body, maternal and child health, international health,ethnomedicine, transnational formations, globalization and modernity, and articulations oftradition,modernityandidentityinpost-colonialsociety.HergeographicalareasofspecializationincludeIndiaandJapan.Dr. Julie Cormack is an archaeologist and biological anthropologist with expertise inpalaeoanthropology (human evolution), prehistory, lithics (stone artefacts), human osteology,osteologicalmeasurement,ancientart, thepublicperceptionofanthropology, racial studiesandthe history of anthropological science. Her geographical areas of specialization include China,Jordan,andsub-SaharanAfrica.Dr.W.D.Glanzmanisanarchaeologistwithexpertiseinceramics,archaeometry,ancienthistoryand languagesof theNearEast,archaeological theoryandmethodology,andancientcommerce.HisgeographicalareasofspecializationincludetheMediterraneanandtheNearEast.Dr. Samanti Kulatilake is a biological anthropologist with expertise in human osteology, andquantitativemethods.She is interested intherelationshipbetweenhumanevolutionaryhistory,dispersals,adaptationsandaffinities,mortuarypracticesandpalaeopathology.HergeographicalareaofspecializationincludesSouthAsia.

Dr. Mary-Lee Mulholland is a cultural anthropologist with expertise in performance andperformativity, popular culture, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, religion, immigrationandmulticulturalism,andconsumption.HergeographicalareasofspecializationsincludeCanadaandLatinAmerica.Professor Fredrick Ulmer is a linguistic and cultural anthropologist with expertise in cross-culturalcommunication,discoursestrategies,businesscommunication,aboriginalstudies,huntersand gatherers, urban anthropology, anthropology of art and anthropology of gender. Hisgeographical area of expertise includes Aboriginal North America with special interest in theNorthwestCoast,theSubarctic,theArcticandtheGreatPlains.


9. ANTH5110andANTH5120:THEHONOURSCOURSES

Honours students are required to take the two Honours courses related to their thesis: ANTH5110HonoursResearchDesignandANTH5120HonoursThesis. ANTH3305isaprerequisiteforANTH5110.ANTH5110isaprerequisiteforANTH5120.InANTH5110,youwillworkwithyoursupervisoronresearchdesign todefineyour researchquestion, compileyour literature review,andpresentyourthesisproposal. InANTH5120youwillwork independently,guidedbyyoursupervisor,toconductyourresearch,analyzeanddiscussyourfindingsandtheirsignificancetothe discipline of Anthropology,write your thesis, andmake a formal oral presentation of yourthesis research. Once enrolled in the Honours Program, your supervisor will provide detailedcourseoutlinesforANTH5110andANTH5120.(SeeAppendixforsamples).

10. WHATISANHONOURSTHESIS?

TheBachelorofArtswithHonoursinAnthropologyrequiresyoutocompleteanHonoursthesisunderthesupervisionofatenured/tenurablefacultymember,knownasyour“supervisor.” TheHonoursthesiswillbe40–60pagesinlength.Notethatthesenumbersrefertothebodyofthethesis text and do not include title pages, notes, references cited, figures, tables, maps, orappendices. In undertaking an Honours thesis, your goals are (1) to develop the capacity toconductandreportonindependentresearchand(2)todemonstratethatyouranalysisanswerstheresearchquestion(s)youhavelaidoutforthethesis.Thethesismustbesubmittedinwrittenformandpresentedorally.Theopportunityexistsforastudenttoundertakeaprojectratherthanaresearch-basedthesistocompletetherequirementsfortheBAHonoursdegree.AnthropologyHonoursprojectsmaytakethe formofamuseumexhibit,apieceofcreativeethnographicwriting,areporton fieldwork,amedia production, or similar endeavour. All projects, however, are expected to include asubstantialwrittencomponentpresentingcriticalreflectionofthework.Studentproposalsforaprojectofthiskindwillbeconsideredonacase-by-casebasis.

Yoursupervisorhasprimaryresponsibilitytoguideyouindevelopmentofyourthesistopicandwithyourresearchandwritingprocesses. Afterinitialdiscussion,yoursupervisorandyoumaychoosetoinviteaReaderoranAdjuncttocontributehisorherexpertisetothethesisresearch.AReader is a tenured/tenurable faculty member at Mount Royal, either in Anthropology or inanotherdepartmentordisciplineoncampus,whohasexpertiserelevanttoyourthesistopic.Anadjunctisascholarwhoisnotatenured/tenurablefacultymemberatMountRoyal,andwhomayinfactbefromoutsidetheUniversity,butwhohasexpertiserelatedtoyourthesistopic.


11. YOURRESPONSIBILITIESYoursupervisorwillguideyou,buttheHonoursthesisisyourproject!Itisyourresponsibilityto:

• formulateyourideas,• planyourresearch,• conductyourresearch,• planyourthesis,• organizeandwritedraftsofyourthesis,• meetregularlywithyoursupervisorand/orReaderorAdjunct,• completeandsubmityourthesis,• prepareandgiveyouroralthesispresentation,and• meetalldeadlines.

Expect to meet regularly with your supervisor and to attend these meetings well prepared todiscussprogressonyourHonoursthesisorproject.

12. YOURSUPERVISOR’SRESPONSIBILITIES

• Itisyoursupervisor’sresponsibilitytoguideandinstructyouintheresearchprocess,nottodesignorconductyourresearchortowriteyourthesis.

• Your supervisor shouldbe available tomeetwith you. As a guideline, ameeting shouldtakeplaceeveryoneortwoweeks.

• Your supervisor should advise you on the establishment of a realistic timeline for thecompletionofthevariousstepsinvolvedinyourthesisresearch.

• YoursupervisorwillprovideyouwiththecourseoutlinesforANTH5110andANTH5120.S/hewillgradeyourworkinthesecourses,includingyourthesisandtheoralpresentationofyourproposalandthesis.

• For grading details in ANTH 5110, please refer its course outline. In ANTH 5120, thewritten thesisandoralpresentationwillbegivena lettergradeaccording to the4-pointgradingsystem(seerelevantsectionsintheMRUcalendar).


13. RESPONSIBILITIESOFYOURREADERORADJUNCT

• IfaReaderorAdjunct isrequiredordesired, thatpersonwillbe identifiedatthetimeofsubmittingyourHonoursapplicationtotheDepartment.

• If you have one, the Reader or Adjunct will provide specialized knowledge, researchstimulus,guidance,andfeedbackonaregularoroccasionalbasistohelpyoudesign,andcarryoutyourthesisresearchandtowriteyourthesis.Hisorherroleissupplementarytothatofthesupervisor.

• AReader orAdjunct is not involved in formally assigning grades to yourwork inANTH5110orANTH5120.

14. HONOURSTHESISWRITINGGUIDE

14.1 PlanningandConductingYourResearch

IdentifyingYourResearchQuestion(s)Yourresearchwillbeginbyidentifyingaresearchquestionorquestions. Thisstepiscritical intheresearchprocessbecauseitwillhelpyoudevelop,refine,oralteryouroriginalquestionuntilitcanserveasthecentralfocusofyourresearchtopic. Yoursupervisorwillworkwithyouinthisprocess.

LiteratureReviewYoumay conduct a thorough review of relevant academic literature, in consultationwith yoursupervisor. Youmay then prepare a literature survey and/or annotated bibliography carefullyformatted according to either the Society for American Archaeology (SAA), the InternationalChicago author-date system referencing style (American Anthropological Association –AAA -follows this style)orAPAstyle.Aswell as the literature surveyand/orannotatedbibliography,this review may include a well-written and detailed summary providing a critique of existingliterature by assessing content strengths and weaknesses, identifying avenues for furtherresearch,andhighlightingtheneedfortheproposedresearch.

EthicsorCollections/PermitApplicationIn addition to the formal assessments in ANTH 5110, any research project involving humansubjectsmustbecarefullyconsideredbytheresearchertomakecertainthatethicalprinciplesareadheredtoinallstagesoftheresearch. TheHumanResearchEthicsBoard(HREB)atMRUsetsout the requirements and processes for ethics applications. If your research requires formalethicsapproval thenyouwillprepare theapplicationandsubmit it to theHREB for theneeded


approval. Likewise, if your researchrequiresyou toobtain formalauthorizationorapermit toworkwithaparticularcollectionofartefactsand/ordocuments,youwillberequiredtoapplyforthisauthorizationorpermit.IfyourHonoursprojectdoesnotrequireaformalethicsapplicationor collections/permit application, individual supervisors may include an assessment in ANTH5110onformulatingamockethicsapprovalormockpermitapplication.

ThesisProposalYouwill write a detailed thesis research proposal. You should expect to submit two or threedrafts of your proposal to your supervisor before it is fully developed, complete, and finalized.Theproposalshouldcontainabriefreviewofrelevantliterature,aclearstatementoftheresearchquestion(s)tobeexamined,abriefdescriptionandexplanationofchosenresearchmethods,andaprecisedescriptionofhowtheresearchwillbeconducted.Thefinalproposalmustbeapprovedbyyoursupervisorandshouldnotexceed10pagesinlength,excludingthetitlepage,references,tables, figures, and appendices. Note that the thesis proposal is one of the graded coursecomponentsforANTH5110.

ThesisProposalPresentation You will make a presentation of your thesis proposal to peers and faculty as the final gradedcoursecomponentforANTH5110.

ConductingResearchHowyoucarryouttheresearchdescribedinyourproposalwillvaryconsiderablydependingonwhetheryourprojectisinarchaeologyorbiological,culturalorlinguisticanthropology.Youandyoursupervisorwilldeterminewhatexactlyneedstobedone,basedonyourresearchproposal.

DataAnalysisJustas therewillbeconsiderablevariation in theresearchmethodsyoumayuse, theremaybeconsiderablevariationinhowyouanalyzeyourdata.Youandyoursupervisorwilldeterminehowexactly your data will be analyzed. In some cases, data analysis can begin as data is beingcollected,butinothercasesitwillbeginafterdatacollectioniscomplete.


14.2 WritingyourHonoursThesisAnHonoursthesisincludesresearchquestion(s),aliteraturereview,methodology,results,andadiscussionofthesignificanceofyourfindings.Itshoulddemonstratethatthestudentisfamiliarwithpublishedliteratureonthetopic,thatappropriateresearchmethodshavebeenselectedandcorrectly applied, that critical interpretation or analysis has been undertaken, that the findingshave been contextualized, and that any original contributions to the field of study have beenclearlyidentified.FormatandStyleNormally,thethesiswillincludethefollowing:! In particular, workshop and faculty efforts will be geared toward building students’research andwriting skills. Emphasiswill alsobeplacedon the students’ ability to think critically and independently, toorganizetheirtimeefficiently,andontheirabilitytodesignasignificantandwell-plannedresearchproject.Studentswillbeexpectedtoworkindependently,totakepersonalresponsibilityandinitiativeforavarietyoftasks,andtobediligentandpersistent in achieving their goal. Although studentswillwork closelywith their faculty supervisors, each student is theprimaryagenttoallphasesoftheresearchandthiscourse.StudentsmustrefertotheBAHonoursinAnthropologyStudentHandbookformoredetails.
