I. INTRODUCTIONThe Flow Meter is a rugged industrial class in-linefow rate indicator, oered in aluminum, brass or
stainless steel models to monitor a wide varietyo liquids. Available in seven port sizes rom to 3 or fow ranges rom .02-0.2 (0.-0.75)through 20-300 GPM (00-00 LPM), metersare calibrated at 0.876 specic gravity or oil orother petroleum-based fuids, .0 or water orother water-based fuids, or .8 or phosphateester liquids.
The fow meter is equipped with a 360 rotatableguard/scale which allows the meter to beinstalled in any orientation without regard toscale direction. Once the meter is permanentlyinstalled, the guard/scale can be rotated 360 to
optimize readability. In addition, the unique spring loaded design othis variable area fow meter decreases viscositysensitivity and allows it to be installed in anyposition, including inverted, without aectingaccuracy. An optional inverted scale is available
or these applications. The standard fow meter is a unidirectionaldevice. I required, a reverse fow by-pass optionis available or the oil, phosphate ester andwater-based fuid models. Note that fow ismeasured in the orward direction only.
Aluminum models are oered as a rugged, lowcost fow meter or monitoring noncorrosivewater-based or petroleum-based fuids underoperating pressures up to 3500 psi (24 bar).
Brass meters are recommended or watermonitoring applications or other systems wherecorrosion inhibitors are not present.
Stainless Steel is available or monitoringhydraulic systems operating at pressuresup to 6000 psi (44 bar) or other corrosivecaustic fuids, such as acetic acid. For urtherconstruction material inormation, see FluidSelection Chart in the Appendix.

II. OPERATING PRINCIPLEThe Flow Meter is a variable area instrument.A sharp-edged Orice, located within thePiston Assembly, orms an annular openingwith the contoured Metering Cone. The pistonassembly carries a cylindrical PPS/CeramicMagnet that is magnetically coupled to an
external Indicating Magnet which movesprecisely in direct response to movement o thepiston. A calibrated Spring opposes fow inthe orward direction.
The Hedland variable area fow meters are themost readable products in their class. Brightlycolored indicators move over the graduated, linear Flow Scalewhich contains bold, easy toread numeral and gauge marks. The enhancedresolution virtually eliminates parallax problems
associated with competitive, direct reading fowmeters.

Installation Recommendations
The in-line fow meter is a simple device toinstall. However, the ollowing measuresare recommended or reliable, trouble-reeoperation:
Do - Align pipe accurately. Piping should beaccurately aligned and o correct length. Thehigh pressure body o the fow meter canwithstand shock and fow/pressure pulsation. However, the piping should be rmly supportedby external mounting brackets, both upstreamand downstream o the meter, to avoid any pipefexing actions that could reduce meter lie.
Do - Use rigid mounting. I the fow meter inlet
or outlet are to be rigidly mounted, and theopposing port is to be connected to fexiblehose, the end connected with the fexible hosemust be rigidly mounted.
Do - Use Tefontape or sealing NPT tting.
Do - Install unions. Install a union near the inlet
or outlet o the meter. This will acilitate quick, easy meter removal and inspection duringperiodic maintenance procedures.
Do - Mount the meter either horizontally orvertically (fow arrow pointing to either sideor straight up). I the meter must be mounted
inverted, special inverted scales are availablerom the actory.
Do - Ensure the fuid is traveling in the directiono the fow arrow (Figure 3 on page 6).
Do - Use at least a 200 mesh (74 micron) lter. The meter will allow particulate to pass that
would jam most valves and fow controls.Systems that do not have ltration should beequipped with at least a 200 mesh (74 micron)
lter. Most hydraulic systems already have muchner ltration.
Dirt, errous metal or sealing agents, such asTefontape may lodge and cause malunction.I the meter is jammed at a xed position, ollowcleaning and maintenance instructions.
Dont - Use thread locking compounds as threadsealant.
Dont - Install the fow meter near turbulenceproducing ttings such as elbows, reducers, close coupled valves, etc. The in-line fowmeter does not require fow straighteners orspecial lengths o straight inlet/outlet piping tostabilize turbulent fow patterns. However, to
assure maximum operational reliability, avoidinstallation o elbows, valves and/or reducersimmediately adjacent to the meter inlet.
Dont - Install the meter near ast-acting valves.Fast-acting valves have the potential to createhigh magnitude hydraulic pressure spikes. Thesespikes can damage the internal componentso the meter, resulting in inaccuracies ormalunction.
Dont - Allow unidirectional meters to beoperated against the direction o the fow arrow. The standard fow meter is an unidirectional fowmeter. The piston acts as a check valve to block
fow in the reverse direction. This causes anexcessive pressure dierential, which can resultin damage to internal meter components. Thefow meter is also available in a modied design, which oers a reverse fow by-pass eature toaccommodate bi-directional fow.
NOTE: In-line meters with a reverse fow by-pass eature are available. Consult actory or
details.

Relie Valves
Oten relie valves will start to open beore theyreach their ull pressure fow settings. This canbe noted by comparing the pressure and fowrate readings made in Step 3 under Tee Test.Any great decrease in fow rate rom tests madein Step 3 under Tee Test indicates a aulty relievalve.
VI. MAINTENANCE
Beore attempting to remove the fow meter
rom the line, check the system to conrmthat line pressure has been reduced to zeroPSI. Failure to ollow these instructions couldresult in serious personal injury or death and/or damage to the equipment.
WARNING
. Remove the fow meter rom the line.
Remove excess piping rom meter.NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the transparentdust guard rom the meter to remove the meter
rom the line. I you choose to remove the dust
guard assembly, reer to Removal o Dust Guard
section on page 11.
2. Thoroughly wipe o the entire fow metersurace using mild detergent or isopropylalcohol.

3. Remove the inlet cap rom the fow meter, noting the sequence o disassembly or
later reerence (during reassembly).4. The internal parts are secured with a
retaining ring. Remove the retaining ringand the internal wetted parts rom thefow meter.
NOTE: I internal parts do not slide reely rom fow
meter, use a wooden dowel inserted into the outletport o the meter to push parts out.
5. Place all parts on a clean work surace.Clean and inspect all parts. Replace anythat appear worn or damaged.
Check inlet port O-ring or damage and
replace i required.
6. Reassemble spring, then piston/magnetassembly and retaining ring into fowmeter.
7. Install metering cone/spider plateassembly, retaining spring, and secure
with inlet cap.8. Reinstall meter to the line.
Removal o Dust Guard
To remove the dust guard or cleaning orreplacement, simply loosen the end ttinglocated at the bottom o the meter and slide
the end cap, dust bumper, and the dust guardo the bottom o the meter, taking care to avoiddamaging the O-ring seal between the end capand the dust gland.
Quick Re-Coupling
This piston-type variable area fow meter isinherently less sensitive to shock and vibrationthan other variable area designs. The uniquemagnetic coupling also eliminates the need ormechanical linkages that can wear or loosenover the unctional lie o the meter.
However, on occasion, a pressure spike or
extreme fow surge can cause the piston tomove at such rapid speed that it disconnects thepiston magnet and the external indicator ring. Ithis occurs, use one o these procedures to re-couple the magnet and the external indicatorring:
I the system permits, simply change fowrate rom no fow to ull fow allowingthe moving piston to magnetically re-couple to the indicator ring.
For rigorous cyclical applications wherede-coupling may occur requently, consultthe technical services sta or urther
recommendations.
Test Kit Maintenance
Load Valve
I the valve ails to load the system, remove thevalve body and check or oreign material, wornparts or seals.
Flow
The absence o any fow reading may indicatea seized piston assembly. Remove any materialthat may be preventing the piston to slide.
I the Test Kit still ails to indicate fow, it is
recommended to return the Test Kit to theactory. For return procedures, see the ReturnGoods Authorization section o this manual onpage 9.

. The pressure drop curves are valid or fuids with density and viscosity similar to actory test fuids. Fluids, especially with higherviscosity than these test fuids, will yield a higher pressure drop through the fow meter and piping system per a given fow volume.
2. A system must have adequate fuidic horsepower available to move the system fuid at a prescribed rate at a pressure adequate toovercome all pressure reducing devices including the fow meter.
