Thursday, December 2, 2010 Correspondents The Brownsville States-Graphic pageB2 By Martha H. Jones Holly Gro ve News By Shirley Tucker, Activity Director Sugar Creek Retirement Center News By Mary W. Lewis Westside News We want to send all our love and sympathy to the family of Margaret Dyer this week. What a wonderful southern belle she was! Every one who knew her loved her, and even though we’ll miss her down here, she’s spending this Christmas with Jesus. As much as she loved a choir can you imagine her excitement as God’s Heavenly choir sang her right into the arms of Jesus. How much better can it get! What a joyous Christmas she’ll have. I’m sure you all had a big Thanksgiving, as did I. There were 25 of us around our table, or should I say around three tables. Every single one of our four daughters and their husbands were home along with all 11 grandchildren, one fiancée from Denver, one fiancée from England, and one great-grandchild and a husband of one of the grandchildren. Our granddaughter, who sings opera, sang “The Lord’s Prayer” for us and everyone had a great time and was stuffed to the gills. It’ll take a few of us several weeks to lose the weight we gained, but a fun time was had by all. Every one at Sugar Creek had a great holiday, too. Bo Pope’s two daughters were here and Dorothy is still here for a few more days. Bo is really enjoying her. Martha Jane Williams granddaughters and three great-granddaughters were here from Mobile. They not only came for Thanksgiving, but to help celebrate her birthday, too. One granddaughter and the three great- granddaughters continued a long-time family tradition and went to the Peabody for Thanksgiving, while Kate stayed and ate with “Miss” Martha Jane at Sugar Creek. Lyde Davis Hamilton went to Memphis for several days over the holidays, but she’s back with us now. I saw Diane and Linda both with her. Alystine Hare was invited to the home of Karen Carl a couple of Sunday’s ago for dinner. Alystine and Karen’s parents all lived in Paris, at the same time and were friends and they were here that Sunday too. Alystine said she had a wonderful time. We had lots of visitors in and out and I missed seeing a lot of them. Boo- hoo. I don’t like missing anyone. Then I don’t know to mention them in this column and I hate that too. I did see Peggy Waddell come through on her way to visit Laura Richards and that was a nice treat. Want to thank Pastor Phillip Cook from First Methodist for bringing our message here Sunday. The residents really like him and enjoy his messages. We are now getting in the Christmas spirit here at Sugar Creek. Trees are starting to get decorated, the nativity is out, presents are getting wrapped, singers are coming to sing, and the Tap-Dancing Grannies are going to tap Monday. We’re going to have our doll expert do a program on Wednesday, and things will be humming the rest of the month. If you’d like to come join us for any of the above mentioned just call us for the times. We’d love to see you. Immediate Holiday Money!!! We can help with the upcoming Holiday! We offer Personal Loans from $200.00 to $900.00 Come by and see our Friendly, Experienced staff Today! 990 E. Main St. Brownsville, TN 38012 731-772-1842 Security Finance *All loans are subject to our liberal credit policy and credit limitations, if any. “Jesus Commissions All Believers” was the subject of the message Sunday, taken from Matthew 28. We attach great importance to what a person says just before they die. In this scripture, Jesus was leaving the earth to return to Heaven. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all the commands that I have given you” was His commission to the disciples and all believers. Families can lose sight of what they are about. Even more tragic is for churches to forget what they are about. One day, Jesus will return. What if we wait until there are no more days and the opportunity to reach out has passed? Prior to the service, DeDe Massengill was baptized. Becky Campbell, Brother Fred and Nancy’s daughter- in-law sang a beautiful old song. She and her two children were visiting them and attended church at Holly Grove. Before the message, Kathy Hopper and Christy Houy sang special music. Danny Simpson inspired us as he sang the Sunday before. Happy birthday to Perry Watridge, Alan Jones, Ann Faulkner, Jessica Byrd, Hollie Watkins, Betty Carvin, Jerry Carrington, Mona Watridge, Britney Tidwell, Jason Staggs, Ramona Mercer and Elva Houg. Happy anniversary to Ronnie and Sue Vanstory. Robert and Betty Barden drove to Paris and celebrated Thanksgiving Day with Jerry and Betty Lewis and family. Other family members joined them. Alan and Debbie Jones’ home was where Luis and Tiffanie Rosales, Brent and Jessica Byrd and Dewey, Martha and Lorie Jones celebrated Thanksgiving Day. Julie and Hayden Hopkins from Hernando, Miss., came in the afternoon. Those on the sick list this week are Dylan Pigue, who underwent a tonsillectomy; Albertine McBride; Mae Simpson; Janie Hight; Elsie Lewis; Fletcher Lewis; and Carolyn Covington. Others to include are Robert and Betty Barden, Hudson Haynes, Ruth Taylor, Glenn White, Sue Spencer, Mai Mathias, Jessie Thomas White and Vincent Maddox. We were glad to see Danny Murphy at church following the traumatic experience he recently had. Bob and Cindy Alexander had an encounter with a deer on 412, causing great damage to their car, but thank the Lord they were not hurt. Several local bands met at College Hill last Friday night for a concert to honor the memory of a fellow musician, Neil Herbert. I would like to have attended, but having a tooth surgically removed has slowed me down. Neil’s wife Alma and I appreciate so much their thoughtfulness. A bridal shower was given for Whitney O’Neal, bride-elect of Randall Elrod, last Sunday afternoon at Holly Grove Church in the fellowship hall by some of the ladies from the church. We have a beautiful painted picture in the back of the baptistry, painted by a very talented young man, Matt Garrett. Matt worshiped with us at Holly Grove Sunday. After leaving church, I realized who Matt is. His father, Harold, was the son of Richard and Otillian Garrett. Marjorie Williams and sons Jimmy and Brad joined other family members to celebrate Thanksgiving Day at the home of Phil and Peggy Emison. Crestview News Volunteers we appreciate you: Christ Temple ladies, CC Club, Beech Grove Church of Christ, First Assembly of God Church, and Community Temple of the Living Church. Thank you for coming this week. Our patients enjoyed the beautiful handmade Thanksgiving cards that the students from Kellie Mash’s fourth grade class at East Side Elementary School and fifth grade from Sunny Hill School made. We appreciate you thinking of our patients. They loved your thoughtfulness. Our monthly birthday party for December will be at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2. We wish a happy birthday to the following patients: Mrs. Marie Browning, Mr. William Drake, Mr. Fred Billings, Mrs. Diann Hart, and Ms. Barbara Hoover. We are having our Secret Angel Tree again this year. If you would like to participate in the Angel Tree, please stop by the Activity Office. Each patient’s name is placed on the Angel and you have the opportunity to choose the patient you would secretly buy a gift for. The patients always enjoy gifts. The angel is placed on the tree once the gift is given. Thank you to Mrs. Dora Mann for the delicious bananas you donated for our fruit bingo Saturday. Thank you, Mrs. Dora, for thinking of our patients. Thought for the week: Having politeness and consideration for others is like investing pennies and getting dollars back. A brother, Garnett Bond of Nashville, was present as he is visiting. Jacob Sanders, the son of Lynn and Rachel Sanders, whose grandparents are Jerry and Anneli Myers and Becky Sanders, won the art contest coming in first place, and his work will be hung in the new wing of Le Bonheur. Jacob has an uncle, his father Lynn’s brother, whose paintings are popularly displayed in Italy and in other prestigious places. Sarah Lewis, daughter of Timmy and Lisa Lewis of Eurekaton Rd. in Whiteville community, is a sophomore at HHS. She won first place for Algebra II in the Annual North West Tennessee Math Contest. I believe there were two more first place winners for HHS in other subjects. Sarah’s grandparents are Jerry and Peggy Lewis of Hillville and Houston and Billie Jo Leath of Dancyville. Andy Sweeney of Kentucky visited his parents, Brother Larry and Emily Sweeney and brother, Jeremy, who is a senior at FHU in Henderson, during Thanksgiving holiday. Jack and Dana Williams met her sisters, Katie Burford Wood of Charleston, Miss., and Anita of Memphis, and their husbands in Memphis for the holiday meal at Cracker Barrel. Wednesday, Jerry and Anneli Myers were hit by a lone man who pulled out in front of them sideswiping the passenger side of Anneli, at a crossover site between Jackson and Humboldt past Porter- Cable Manufacturing. She said the impact spun them violently in the road and turned them back from whence they had come from. One of the scary things was the car windows and windshield began popping out by the hard impact and they were covered with glass in their hair, ears, and clothes. Thankfully, they escaped injury and cuts, but too shaky to be at Wednesday night Bible class. Bro. Hugh Teems died last Monday in JMCGH at age 94. He was a very likable and physically fine looking father of Ron Teems. Only a resident here six weeks, Ron and Stephanie had invited him to make his home with them on Joey Street. Bro. Hugh Teems was from near Rome, Ga., and his funeral was Saturday, conducted at Cedartown Church of Christ where he had been an elder and also song leader. He had immediately taken part here, rarely missing service and also would go to the nursing homes with the church for our regular visits. He requested any contributions be sent to Gospel Broadcasting Network there in Ringgold, Ga., in lieu of flowers, which the church here complied with his wish. I am pretty sure there is a network of Gospel Broadcasting in Chattanooga where their TV satellites are beamed into may locations, primarily foreign countries where possible. That effort was introduced a good many years ago to us and many of the Lord’s churches. By Denise Phillips Wellwood/Zion News Now that everyone is full of turkey and all the trimmings, it’s time to start thinking about Christmas. Let us not forget to continue to give thanks for our abundance of blessings! Brother Mark Conway began preaching about the wonder of Christmas on Sunday morning at Zion. He said that “Hope is not found in the best buy at ‘Best-Buy.’” We must be ready when Jesus returns and until then, hold onto the peace that Christ gives us to survive these trying times. Sunday afternoon, Jimmy and I traveled to Hillville to his sister’s home (Billy and Linda Pittman) to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with his family. We had a wonderful time of fellowship with his three sisters and their families, and all of our children and their families, plus many more that I did not know. Brother Phil Lovelace delivered a dynamic message to the churches that gathered at Zion Tuesday night for the joint Thanksgiving service. If you were not there, you not only missed the sermon, but an awesome time of fellowship. Thanksgiving Day my family enjoyed the traditional meal in our home. All of our children and their families were here as well as all of my sisters and one of my brothers with most of their families. My brother Charles had his family in his home so he wasn’t able to attend, but he did come over Wednesday night to visit with us while waiting for the Rainey’s to arrive. There’s nothing like mama’s cooking for the holidays! With all of the festivities going on, I forgot many people’s birthdays. Happy belated birthday wishes to Kristi Joyner who celebrated Nov. 20 and to Delaine Chilcutt who celebrated Nov. 24. I’m trying to get a jump on December birthdays, so happy birthday wishes to Amanda Drake on Dec. 2 and Joey Drake on Dec. 15. This lovely couple will also celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary Dec. 3. Abbey Thomas will celebrate her birthday Dec. 4. I hope all of you have the greatest day on your special occasions. By now everyone is wondering what has happened to the old Mulligan’s Store. Hopefully, it is beginning to look like a home (ours). December is here, so mark your calendars! Youth, don’t forget Precept this weekend. “M” Night will be Dec. 6 at Poplar Corner Baptist Church at 7 p.m. WMU will meet Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. in the home of Bettye Brooks. Zion’s adult choir will present their Christmas Cantata Dec. 19 at both morning services followed by the Children’s Musical at 6 p.m.. The annual Christmas fellowship will end the evening in the FLC.
