Dementia in Clinical Practice: A Neurological PerspectiveStudies in the Dementia Clinic

Dementia in Clinical Practice: A Neurological Perspective addresses neurological contributions to the diagnosis and management of dementia through a longitudinal examination of the work undertaken in dedicated neurological dementia clinics. This concise, pragmatic handbook covers: The use of cognitive screening instruments and their diagnostic utility. The use of non-cognitive (functional, behavioural, neurovegetative) screen-ing instruments and  their diagnostic utility. The use of other diagnostic investigations: neuroimag-ing, neurophysiology, neuropathology.

Features 7 Pragmatic, rather than theoretical and grounded in studies of day-to-day clinical practice in a dedicated cognitive function clinic with findings widely applicable to day-to-day clinical practice 7 Contains details of pragmatic use of common cognitive and non-cognitive screening instruments (e.g. MMSE, ACE-R IADL, PHQ-9, IQCODE) and their diagnostic utility in the dementia clinic to allow readers to access data about test utility and hence applicability in clinical practice 7 Clear tabular and graphical display of data so that readers may quickly and easily ap-praise study findings

Contents Introduction.- 1  Referral Patterns.- 2  Cognitive Assessment.- 3  Non-cognitive Assessment and Combinations of Scales.- 4  Investigation.- 6  Man-agement.- Conclusion.- Bibliography: Cognitive Function Clinic publications and presentations.- References.

Materia Medica of New and Old Homeopathic MedicinesDavid S. Riley’s interest in the history, method-ology, and results of homeopathic drug prov-ings came from his study of homeopathy at the Hahnemann College of Homeopathy in Albany, California. The 69 drug homeopathic drug prov-ings published here are the result of his investiga-tion of the research methods of homeopathic drug provings that form part of the basis for prescribing in homeopathy. In Dr. Hahnemann’s time the method by which the treatment profiles of ho-meopathic remedies were determined was called provings, after the original German word Prüfung, which means „test.“ Scientific research methods have evolved from the early days of homeopathy and Dr. Riley, in an attempt to improve transpar-ency and reduce bias, has incorporated elements of contemporary research methods such as randomization, blinding, and formal good clinical practice guidelines (GCP) into homeopathic drug provings, while adhering to the general guide-lines suggested by Dr. Hahnemann and used by homeopathic practitioners and researchers around the world.

Features 7 Information that will help homeopathic physi-cians improve their practice 7 Practitioners can verify and clarify the symptom picture of the remedy which will lead to refinement in the reper-tory 7 These provings explore proving design and methodology

Treatment of Thyroid TumorJapanese Clinical Guidelines

There are a number of guidelines for the treatment of thyroid tumors that have established positions in clinical practice in North America and Western European countries. However, in Japan, where radioisotope facilities are of limited availability, treatment plans for differentiated thyroid cancer differ considerably from these other markets and the associated clinical guidelines need modifica-tion before they can be adopted. In addition, although thyroid tumor is a common disease in endocrine practice, its management can differ even between specialists. For these reasons, the need to develop an original guideline for Japan has become widely acknowledged.

Festschrift – The Institute of Nuclear Medicine50 Years

The Institute of Nuclear Medicine, founded in 1961, celebrates with this Festschrift, its Golden Jubilee. It has been a remarkable 50 years of progress of the radionuclide tracer methodology. From initial, physiology based experimentation, a full independent medical discipline evolved, and with it, a comprehensive clinical service. Diagnosis and Treatment with radiotracers have established the basis for Nuclear Medicine. Technological advances have permeated the field like none other, its multidisciplinary character and its translational research are embedded in the history of the In-stitute and its success. Recent and latest advances in the field promise a future as bright as has been witnessed and documented in the last 50 years.

MRI in EpilepsyMRI can play an important role in identifying and localizing epileptogenic foci. This book aims to provide the clinical and imaging information re-quired in order to decide whether an MRI scan is appropriate and whether it is likely to be sufficient to detect a lesion. The first part of the book pres-ents background information on epilepsy patients and explains how to perform an MRI examina-tion. Detailed attention is paid to functional MRI and post-processing, and the examination of sub-categories of patients is also discussed. The second part of the book then documents the MRI findings obtained in the full range of epileptogenic lesions with the aid of high-quality images. Throughout, emphasis is placed on guiding the reader in the correct interpretation of the imaging findings.

Features 7 Detailed guide to the use of MRI in epi-lepsy 7 Clearly relates clinical information to imaging findings 7 Emphasis on high-resolution and functional MRI 7 Edited by an expert who has supervised MRI in one of the world’s largest epilepsy surgery centers for more than 10 years

    Real-Time Three-Dimensional Transesophageal EchocardiographyA Step-by-Step Guide

Three-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocar-diography (TEE) is a powerful visual tool  which the novice or experienced echocardiographer, cardiologist, or cardiac surgeon can use to achieve a better understanding and assessment of normal and pathological cardiac function and anatomy. A complement to traditional 2D imaging, 3D TEE enables visualization of any cardiac structure from multiple perspectives.  For the echocardiographer, it demands a different set of skills for image acqui-sition and manipulation.

Features 7 Up-to-date 7 Synoptic presentation of essential “how-to” and relevant clinical informa-tion 7 More than 300 color figures 7 Practical fundamentals, including altered knobology, and how to acquire and manipulate image datas-ets 7 Systematic identification of special diag-nostic issues 7 Normal and abnormal cardiac pathology 7 Supplemented by the Virtual TEE Perioperative Interactive Education (PIE) website which provides free access to online resources for teaching and learning TEE:   http://pie.med.utoronto.ca/TEE
