The academic year of 2012/13 is fast approaching its end. Very soon, our students will start their summer vacation. Higher diploma final year students who are graduating in this summer will enter their full-time employment very soon and need to transit from their studies to work life. On the other hand, nearly half of the higher diploma graduating students will further their studies to upgrade their qualifications to a university degree. For non-final year students, most of them will be engaged in summer internships or take part in overseas exchanges or visits.

The Moot Court Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School Students, which was newly launched in last September, had attracted 350 students from 30 secondary schools to participate. It came to a successful closing on 11 May afternoon with an award presentation ceremony held in the Cityview Hotel. The event was commemorated by a newspaper supplement published in Ming Pao on that date. A total of 12 prizes were presented to winning teams or individual students from 8 secondary schools. Our partners Rotary Club of New Territories, Education Bureau and Hong Kong Association for Business Education all found the Competition highly successful and would seriously consider continuing it in the coming academic year.

The second mock examination on Business, Accounting and Financial Studies (BAFS) for the HKDSE candidates, in support of the Hong Kong Association for Business Education, was successfully completed in early March with about 3,000 Secondary Six students participating in the examination and review session. We found that the mock examination was well received by secondary students who would be taking this subject in the HKDSE examination, and it provided a good support to them to overcome this challenging examination.

Our Professional Mentorship Programme which enhances the development of our final year students with constructive mentoring support from Rotary Club members, professionals, business associates and our alumni has been operating smoothly in this year. A BBQ interim gathering held on 3 March, enjoying a high turnout with 120 participants, was well attended by our collaborating partners including members from the Rotary Club of Kowloon North East and IVE Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association, and our student mentees and staff.

In external competition, congratulations are made to our accountancy students who participated in the HKIAAT Competition in April and received a Merit Award.

Lastly, I would again sincerely thank all our partners including parents, employers, professionals and Rotary Club members who have provided their continued support to the development of our students and staff. My special thanks are due to our Law Advisory Committee’s members, especially the Chairman Mr. Duffy Wong, Honorary Advisors Mr. Huen Wong, Mr. Anthony Hung, Mr David Hui and Mr. Simon Siu who offered great help and valuable advice to the Moot Court Competition, and some of them also provided work attachments and scholarships to our students.

Mr. Huen Wong gives words of encouragement to the secondary students.

The champion team from Madam Lau Kam Lung Secondary School of Miu Fat Buddist Monastery with mentor, Mr. Kevin Kau (second from right, back row), and Guests of Honour.

A total of 120 guests including 80 secondary school students and teachers, 20 Rotary Club members, Education Bureau officials, mentors and judges celebrated the closing of the Moot Court Competition for HK Secondary School Students at the Awards Presentation Ceremony held on Saturday afternoon, 11 May in the Crystal Ballroom at the Cityview Hotel.

The five Guests of Honour, including Mr. Huen Wong (Chairman of HK International Arbitration Centre and Past President of Law Society of Hong Kong), Mr. Kenneth Wong (District Governor of Rotary International District 3450), Mr. Duffy Wong (Chairman of Quality Education Fund Steering Committee of Education Bureau), Mr Edwin Tsui (Principal Education Officer of Education Bureau) and Ms. Josephine Kea (Academic Director, Business Administration Discipline, IVE), congratulated the winning teams and students for their efforts and presented the prizes to them at the Ceremony.

The Guests of Honour remarked that this competition has achieved the aim of developing the students’ interests in law in a funny and easy way as well as providing them the chance to learn team work and sharpen their analytical and debating skills.

A newspaper supplement from Ming Pao was distributed during the Ceremony to commemorate the event. With the congratulatory messages written by prominent government officials and professionals, the advertorial from Ming Pao was based on the post-competition interviews of the secondary students from the winning teams.

The highlight was the group photo session during which the students were thrilled to have the opportunity to shake hands and take photos with the Guests of Honour and their mentors. Moreover, all the attendees enjoyed a three-minute show that demonstrated the students’ initial participation in the briefing workshop, then at the preliminary competition at the Moot Courts of Tuen Mun and Morrison Hill Campuses, and in the final at the High Court.

Exchanges of cheers and congratulations echoed round the tables among the winning teams during the tea buffet time. The students were motivated and encouraged by the mentors to continue their efforts on their studies and perhaps pursue their dreams on law.

Positive feedback was received from all parties concerned and it was encouraged that such an event should continue in the coming year.

Details of the competition can be found in the website www.mootcourt.com.hk.

Students listen attentively to the review speakers.

Following the BAFS mock examination held on 26 January 2013 which was organized by the Hong Kong Association of Business Education and supported jointly by the Departments of Business Administration in all IVE campuses, another major event, the Questions Review and Analysis Session was subsequently held on 2 March 2013 in 4 IVE campuses (Haking Wong, Kwun Tong, Morrison Hill and Tuen Mun).

Students concentrated on listening to the review speakers to explain the suggested answers. In addition, they were eager to know about the average score of each question. During the Q&A session, students raised the concern about the examination answering techniques, which was clearly explained by the review speakers. Students did comment this event could provide helpful feedback to them and increase their confidence to sit for the coming HKDSE BAFS Examination.

Professional LinkageInterim BBQ Gathering - Professional Mentorship Programme 2012/13

The event was organized on 3 March 2013 for students to meet the professional mentors and potential employers at Bahia Restaurant in Tai Po. A total of 120 mentors, mentees and staff joined the gathering. Both mentors and mentees enjoyed 3 hours of interflow in a relaxed atmosphere within a greenish environment. All of them also enjoyed the sightseeing at the Lung Mei Beach nearby. Everyone shared their study and work experiences together. The event provided a good opportunity for our student mentees to interact with their mentors and enhanced the networking of the Department with professionals and employers.

BA (TM) together with the Hong Kong General Chamber of Small and Medium Business (HKGCSMB) organized a press conference on Thursday, 30 May 2013 reporting the questionnaire survey about small and medium businesses’ (SMBs’) awareness on the impending legally related risks.

There were three speakers at the conference. They were Mr. Eric Ng, President of the HKGCSMB, Mr. David Tam, Chairman of the Law and Corporate Administration Programme Board, and Mr. George Lam, Course Leader of Higher Diploma in Management and Legal Studies (HDLMS). A lot of newspaper and radio reporters attended the conference.

Mr. David Tam reported the survey that legal and commercial knowledge was important to SMBs. Mr. Eric Ng said that it was crucial and invaluable to hire employees with legal as well as commercial knowledge. “If the employee of the company is familiar with legal knowledge, it not only protects the company’s benefit by reducing the chance of legal disputes but also helps reduce the legal expenses by avoiding the need to bring the case to the court. Therefore, a useful and law-related business course can train the students to possess those skills that definitely help SMBs,” emphasized the President.

In order to meet the needs of SMBs, Mr. George Lam of BA (TM) introduced that the Departments of Business Administration of Tuen Mun and Chai Wan are going to launch a new course, Higher Diploma in Management and Legal Studies, in September 2013. The course helps students develop business management skills and apply related legal concepts and business practices to relevant trades, businesses or professions. Graduates of this programme are able to serve as human resources officers, company secretarial officers, loss adjustors and tax assistants in various business organizations.

The conference was proceeding smoothly and successfully. The reporters were very interested in the new course and asked a lot of questions in the conference.

A significant proportion of the graduates from our programme Higher Diploma in Legal and Administrative Studies have pursued their careers in local law firms. Land search and registration issues are part of their routine duties. To enhance the current students’ familiarity with and knowledge of the services of the Land Registry, we approached the Land Registry for a guided tour.

On 11 March 2013, the Land Registry was very helpful to organize two identical tours for about forty students. After the opening remarks, outline briefing and introductory PowerPoint show in the conference room, the students were guided to various sections of the Land Registry, such as the Information Counter, Deeds Lodgement Unit, Search Service Section and Owners Incorporation Unit. The staff members were very helpful in explaining the work procedures and requirements to our students and responded to their questions in details. Our students were encouraged to try the self-service terminals afterwards. The visit was ended with a Q&A session in their multi-function room.

Dongguan Enterprise Visit

Rean Lee

“Reading ten thousand books is not so useful as travelling ten thousand miles.” A group of 39 students of the programmes Higher Diploma in Business Administration and Higher Diploma in Accountancy of BA (TM) had a Dongguan enterprise visit on 22 March 2013 for more exposure.

The visit began with the reception by Dongguan Tao Heung Centralized Food Processing and Logistics Centre. With a gross area of 45,000 square metres, the centre provides food production and processing services to the Tao Heung Group’s restaurants. The students’ vision was widened especially by the centre’s supreme quality control and logistics management in order to maintain a continuous supply of processed ingredients and dim sums to over 200 branches in the Mainland and Hong Kong. They also enjoyed the guided tour at the Tao Heung Museum of Food Culture which shows exhibits on the transition of cuisine culture over the world.

Providing professional service in a courteous way in a cabin is not an easy task for air attendants. Understanding the importance of customer service and safety to the success of the passenger aviation business, Cathy Pacific has established its own training and development centre at the CX City in Tung Chung to ensure training quality.

As CX is renowned for its training facilities and the City is not open to the public, students from the programmes Higher Diploma in Business Administration and Foundation Diploma (Level 3) – Business were eager to join the visit to the CX City on 29 May 2013. The visit started with a presentation about the history and development of the company, which was then followed by a tour around various training centres for pilots and cabin crews. Among these areas, students found the simulated cabin most interesting as they were allowed to touch the facilities at the gallery where air attendants prepare the meal for the passengers.

The visit enhanced students’ understanding of human resources concepts in the textbook by visualizing various training and development methods adopted by a modern organization. Students found the visit useful and they even expressed their interests in various positions in the company by raising a lot of questions about the entry requirements and the working environment.

This year, BA Society with the support of BA (TM) organized for students and staff to take part in the 2013 Community Chest NT Walk for Millions on Sunday, 3 March 2013. There were 64 participants including 51 students and 13 colleagues.

The weather was beautiful and we took almost 3 hours to complete a 5.5-kilometre walk from Pak Shek Kok Promenade to Tai Po Waterfront Park. We raised $3,130 for the Community Chest. The funds will be used to support “Family and Child Welfare Services” provided by the Community Chest’s member agencies so as to maintain and strengthen family bonding and to assist family members establishing mutual support.

The walk was followed by a BBQ gathering at Bahia Restaurant in Tai Po where the students and colleagues took the opportunity to chat and enjoy themselves happily.

The Annual Dinner 2012 cum James Lam Farewell Party organized by the Legal and Administrative Studies Alumni Association (LASAA) was held at Hak Ka Hut in Tsim Sha Tsui on 25 January 2013.

About 75 alumni members and teachers participated in the event. Apart from sharing their work and study experience, the members also celebrated the retirement of Mr. James Lam, the Honorary Advisor of the LASAA and the knowledgeable Chinese law expert. At the dinner, a mini-figure featuring “James Lam” was presented to him to commemorate his dedication towards education and his valuable guidance to LASAA. The evening was enjoyable and full of joy.

Visit to CX City

Grace Chu
