Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: The 2011 ACS Award inOrganometallic Chemistry
Starting this year, Organometallics has begun to invite articlesfrom chemists who have earned awards from chemical
societies, agencies, or comparable bodies worldwide foradvancing organometallic chemistry. Some of the awardeeshighlighted to date have been recognized for the impact of theirwork in allied fields such as organic, inorganic, and greenchemistry.1
The capstone installment in this series for the calendar yearhonors Professor Peter Wolczanski, who received the ACSAward in Organometallic Chemistry following a banquet heldat the Anaheim ACS meeting on March 29, 2011 (see Figure1). To our knowledge, this is the only annual award givenspecifically for accomplishments in organometallic chemistry.2
Every recipient since the prize was inaugurated in 1985 hasserved as an Editor or Advisory Board member of this journal. It is worth noting for our international readers that most ACSawards are open to chemists from all countries, and anyone cansubmit a nomination.3
Professor Wolczanski’s laudatio reads as follows: “forpioneering investigations of the syntheses and reactivity ofvery low coordinate transition metal complexes that performremarkable and fundamentally important chemical trans-formations.” The thoroughness of his scholarship is well-known to all, and his penetrating intellectual abilities haveenlightened and enlivened many a symposium. Two author-itative and didactic full papers, which describe some of theachievements that led to his award, can be found at thebeginning of the Articles. A biographical sketch is featuredtherein.Pete, we warmly congratulate you on this richly deserved
recognition. And in the spirit of a toast, we invite our readers totake a peek at some of the behind-the-scenes revelry at theAnaheim meeting: http://www.f l ickr .com/photos/rynodownhill/sets/72157626259542995/. We all look forwardto much additional stimulating, unexpected, thought-provoking,and masterfully executed chemistry from your laboratory in theyears to come.
