FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORDear Friends,

Highlights of my year always include visits to ArtWell classrooms, and this year was no exception. Waiting just outside a classroom as students prepare to welcome ArtWell Teaching Artists is to bear witness to a wondrous transformation. Excitement fills the room as students’ energies rise. A few take drums joyfully into their hands and move with rhythms. Shy students, usually tentative in sharing their work, smile wide as

they experience peers snapping their fingers in encouragement. ArtWell classrooms exhibit enthusiastic creativity, unbounded curiosity, and brave risk-taking.

This year also brought great sadness as we lost beloved Joe Brenman who was an Artist in Residence with us from 2003 to January of 2018. Joe was an admired exemplar of our values. Throughout his time at ArtWell, he inspired thousands of students, fellow teaching artists, activists, partners, staff, and board leaders with the genius of his artistry, tireless passion, and humanity, joy, and love. And as we continue to mourn his loss, we continue to feel the seeds of his legacy growing in us.

Joe’s amazing ability to turn classrooms into art academies affirms the brilliance and talent of all of our Teaching Artists who foster sanctuaries in every school they work in. ArtWell Teaching Artists led programs and workshops in 40 Philadelphia classrooms, creating safe environments to help students mine the strengths in their personal beings and communities and discover the power of their dreams.

As is displayed in this annual report, we have had an abundant year, and are grateful for all our supporters that made this possible including William Penn Foundation and their multi-year grant that is enabling us to expand our DeepWell model. And we are honored to have received several awards, such as the Alpha Phi Alpha Award for Educational Excellence. We are so thankful for the opportunity to be engaged with classrooms out in our communities.

Each day, we are profoundly aware of the enormous challenges our students face in our city and world. Each day, we also witness them standing up with powerful questions, ambitious visions, inspiring gifts – and the extraordinary metamorphosis that takes place when they are given the opportunity to create.

On behalf of ArtWell, I express heartfelt thanks for your partnership in our mission and for listening together to our young people as they call us again and again to stand up for all people.

I used to think being a leader meant organizing people. Now I think it means

THE ART OF GROWING LEADERS The Art of Growing Leaders is an expansion of The Art of Growing Up® program, ArtWell’s rites of passage module. Through mask-making, poetry and multi-disciplinary arts, students build trust with one another and explore their identity and aspirations, inspired by cross-cultural coming of age traditions. Later in the program, students identify their unique strengths as leaders and work together on a social action project using art for advocacy and activism.

HEARTBEATLaunched in the fall of 2015, HeartBeat builds on more than 15 years of partnership with Marcy Francis and Jan Jeffries, ArtWell’s percussion artists in residence. HeartBeat uses the power of West African and Afro-Caribbean music and tradition as a vehicle to engage youth while integrating ArtWell’s expertise in poetry for literacy-building and reflection.

Since 2000, ArtWell has had the honor of working with hundreds of amazing partners including schools, libraries, diverse faith-based organizations, and health and social-service providers to serve up to 1500 students per year across the Greater Philadelphia region.

ARTWELL CORE PROGRAMS

MASTERPEACEArtWell’s MasterPeace® program engages students and communities in large-scale arts processes such as murals, mosaics and installations to help participants overcome challenges, build bridges and lift up the strengths of their neighborhoods. Individual and community-focused projects under the Masterpeace program have led to a number of collaborative installations throughout the city, empowering individuals and restoring their neighborhoods.

WE THE POETSThe We the Poets® program, ArtWell’s longest running program, builds literacy skills, communication and self expression, and fosters a love of learning through poetry. We the Poets’ curriculum is aligned with state and core standards for grades 1-12 and has been used in Pennsylvania districts for standardized test (PSSAs) preparation tied to literacy comprehension.

I liked how the Artwell teachers trusted us as 7th graders, to talk about deep stuff and not treat us like little kids.We the Poets Student, 7th Grade, Saint Francis De Sales School, 2019

YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCILThe ArtWell Youth Leadership Council, joined by youth leaders from Norris Square Neighborhood Project in 2017/2018, focuses on transformative and innovative ways to share resources, model strength through inter-dependence, provide youth with equitable compensation and increased opportunities, and connect across communities and neighborhoods for greater impact.

ARTWELL DEEPWELLThe ArtWell DeepWell initiative provides select partner sites with multiple ArtWell core programs for students across several grade levels. The multi-program model was developed in 2015 to provide educational partners with consistent, long-term programs for deeper impact on students, and an expanded school presence in support of school staff, families, and the broader school community.

2018/2019 DeepWell partners: Al-Aqsa Islamic Academy, Camp Sojourner Girls’ Leadership Camp, James Rhoads Elementary School, John H. Taggart School, and Parkway West High School.
