Another year has come and gone. Over the year we have seen a variety of changes including the turnover of staff at all levels and the loss of some residents.

Early in the year our CEO Stephen Jackson moved to a job in Nunavut, and after considerable time and effort, we were pleased to hire Morgan Gebauer as CEO.

A Yellowknifer, Morgan brings a strong fiscal background and high level of enthusiasm and dedication to the position.

On behalf of the board, I would like to thank all the staff, volunteers, residents and their families, and our supporters for their efforts and contributions. Day in and day out you are what makes AVENS a great place for our residents.

We value our partnership with the Yellowknife Seniors’ Society who provide a variety of quality seniors’ programs in our Baker Community Centre and who, together with the NWT Seniors’ Society, advocate for seniors. We look forward to our continued collaboration.

Thanks to the Department of Health and Social Services, Yellowknife Health and Social Services, the NWT Housing Corporation and their Ministers for their support as we work together to meet the increasing need for long-term care and seniors’ housing.

Throughout the past year Aven Manor (long-term care), Aven Cottages (dementia and respite care), Aven Court, and Aven Ridge (independent housing facilities) operated at 100% capacity and all have long waiting lists.

Fiscal restraints and pressures over the past year have been, and remain, significant. We faced reductions in some program areas and did not make as much progress as we had hoped in the area of expanding our facilities on campus. However, we remain committed to working towards the creation of additional facilities.

At last year’s Annual General Meeting, a full board was elected, and I am pleased to report that each board member remains in office as we head into the second year of their elected two-year term.

As I finish my first year as President, I would like to thank my fellow board members for their commitment and dedication to AVENS. It is often a challenge to balance work, family and volunteer commitments.

Thank you all.

Ronald Allen President

2016–2017 was a bitter-sweet year we call a ‘great transition’. We said goodbye to many beloved residents, staff and board members which brought many new faces to our AVENS family.

During all of the changes we maintained our focus on providing a safe and caring community for seniors.

We completed many projects to increase the security and safety of our residents and staff. Some highlight projects include installing flooring which encourages resident mobility and installing exterior security cameras.

Two well-loved new faces were added to our family: Kenya and Kobe, bunnies from the NWT SPCA. These furry friends are part of our pet therapy program.

AVENS is only one part of a network of not-for-profit, community, advocacy, and

government organizations working for seniors. In the years to come we will continue to work, with these partners throughout the community and the NWT to increase access to appropriate and quality housing options for NWT seniors.

We operate with a volunteer board of directors, serve residents from across the NWT and have hard-working passionate staff.

Since we opened the doors to Aven Manor in September 1987, AVENS’ board and staff have stayed focussed on providing safe, quality services for NWT seniors. We’ve changed and grown a lot over our history. Starting out as the Yellowknife Association of Concerned Citizens for Seniors (YACCS), we have grown from providing services such as building benches and advocating for local seniors into a sophisticated organization offering not only housing options, but a sense of community for seniors from throughout the NWT.

Throughout our evolution and growth, we have remained a not-for-profit society but we work closely in partnership with other community organizations,

and with the Government of the Northwest Territories. No one organization can do it all. But together, and over the past 30 years, we have demonstrated the power and effectiveness of working together on behalf of seniors. And throughout that time, we have remained steadfastly focussed on our vision.

AVENS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS PROVIDING A SAFE AND CARING COMMUNITY FOR SENIORS

AVENS is a not-for-profit organization that relies on partnership and donations to help create the community we all want for our seniors.

In June, members of AVENS’ board visited the new seniors’ residence in Behchokò. AVENS works with partners such as these to share experiences and best practices.

Even though our campus is in Yellowknife, AVENS serves seniors from across the NWT and the need continues to grow. Our services are a valued asset to the territory and have been used as a model by other communities.

As the territorial government looks to provide more than 200 new beds across the NWT in the

coming years, AVENS expects to expand its campus and services to satisfy some of this need. We continue to work with our partners, the Department of Health and Social Services and the NWT Housing Corporation to achieve this lofty goal.

We hope to explore, in the year ahead, and with the partnership

of the territorial government, the redevelopment of the kitchen and laundry facilities on our campus. This work will be undertaken with an eye to preparing for future expansion of the number and range of housing options for seniors on our campus.

As AVENS looks to the future aspiring to expand the services we provide to NWT seniors, we will need the support of the entire community. And so we look forward to expanding our fundraising activities in support of this work.

“The Order of the Northwest Territories, established in 2013, recognizes individuals who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the NWT or elsewhere. It is the highest honour awarded to NWT residents.” This is how the Government of the Northwest Territories describes the honour bestowed on Lynda Koe.

We couldn’t agree more, when it comes to Lynda. Lynda was nominated for contributing more than 27 years of dedicated service to NWT seniors. She started at AVENS in 1989, shortly after the opening of Aven Manor, heading up the long term care facility. Throughout AVENS’ history, and her distinguished career, Lynda has demonstrated

her quiet dedication to AVENS and the NWT seniors it serves.

Through her work at AVENS, Linda has ensured NWT seniors at AVENS feel that they are at home. She has helped to create a level of care that continues today, which is compassionate, respectful and dignified. Throughout her time at AVENS, and continuing today, she puts residents’ needs first.

Her passion and professionalism earned her accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Canada. In March 2010 AVENS expanded to include care for NWT residents with dementia. Lynda played a key role in implementing specialized training for staff. She also worked closely with family members are able to ensure the needs of their loved ones are being met.

Lynda has been a leader and a role model for the many long-term, caring employees at AVENS. She exemplifies the character and values that are part of AVENS’ fabric as a compassionate, quality care provider.

We are very proud of Lynda, her accomplishments and all that she provides to AVENS and its residents. Her legacy will be the indelible mark she has made at AVENS through the many people she touched throughout her career, and the staff she mentored and trained to provide the level of care that is now an integral part of AVENS.
