Vision:
Our philosophy provides for a creative, authentic, performance-based educational system that equips all students with intellectual skills and promotes emotional intelligence. Students are empowered, informed citizens who contribute actively toward a democratic and equitable society. Avanti honors diversity and builds on the strength of its community, deliberately and explicitly, challenging all forms of inequity.
Mission:
Avanti is a small innovative public high school that provides a personalized learning environment. We build lifelong connections to learning, creativity, resourcefulness, and social justice. Avanti’s mission is to promote compassion, critical thinking, and creative self-expression, while emphasizing high standards for all students within an interdisciplinary structure.
Core Themes and Values:
Creativity and innovation; Arts integration; Performance-based learning; Collaboration over competition; Depth in curriculum over coverage; Relationship-based environment; importance placed on community; Learning to use one’s mind well; Personalization; Student as worker; Teacher as coach; Demonstrations of mastery; A tone of decency and trust; Developing the habits of mind and heart.
WE WORK TOGETHER:
We encourage Parent/Family/Community involvement as a
means of building relationships between our school and
community.
WE ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS:
Students developed a partnership with Madison
Elementary and the Thurston County
Food Bank to develop the Madison-Avanti Giving
Garden. Students maintain the garden and sponsor
Farm Stand Fridays.
Avanti High School is a member of the Safe
Schools Coalition and we partner with PFLAG to
sponsor Pizza Klatch, a support group for Avanti’s
LGBTQI students.
2014 SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE IN ARTS EDUCATION

WHAT MAKES AVANTI DIFFERENT?
Avanti High School is a school
of choice that provides an
alternative learning experience
for students in grade 9-12.
We embrace the “one size
does not fit all” perspective on education and
instruction. We focus on helping students to
use their minds well. Our philosophy is depth
over breadth and we partner with students to
help them achieve their academic goals.
Avanti utilizes a performance-based curriculum
where students must demonstrate mastery by
reaching a minimum of
80% on all assigned tasks
and learning goals.
Students continue to earn
credits as they meet state,
district, and school
graduation requirements.
Avanti was founded in November of 1997, and
since its inception the school has developed
into one of the many successful options
programs in the Olympia School District.
In 2009, Avanti was named one
of the top ten performing
alternative schools in the State
of Washington, and our award-
winning staff are all “highly
qualified teachers.”

AVANTI IS FOR EVERYONE
A climate of compassion, tolerance, and respect
exists and desired habits of the heart and mind
are the guiding principles for both students and
staff. Therefore, incidents of prejudice,
discrimination, bullying, and harassment are
interrupted and addressed promptly and
professionally.
As a result, Avanti High School is a safe, caring,
and culturally responsive
learning environment where
all students and their families
are welcome and accepted.
“I like how the students are being taught while at the
same time learning more responsibility and independence.
I think the [Avanti] teachers are awesome.
They seem to have a good understanding of each of the
students even though there are such a wide variety
of different types of people.”
“One of the best
things about Avanti
is the opportunity
it provides you
to have a say in
your own education.”
We welcome your interest in attending Avanti. To learn

from OSD middle school programs (Washington MS,
Reeves MS, Marshall MS, and Jefferson MS), attend
Olympia High School, Capital High School, and the
Olympia Regional Learning Academy (ORLA).
We welcome applicants from outside the district,
however, students residing within the Olympia School

“The gift of the [Avanti] program resides not merely in its
academics, but in its capacity to foster the self-directed
pursuit of achievement, knowledge, and novelty.”
