NORFOLK ISLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL

Principal’s Report
Welcome again to Felix Bachmann our new Deputy Principal
at Norfolk Island Central School. Felix has hit the ground
running and has managed to get around and connect with
many of our students and parents and of course all of the
NICS staff. I will be travelling to Sydney for the NSW
Principals’ Conference in week 8. During this time Mr
Bachmann will be the relieving Principal and Mr. Miller will
step into the Deputy Principal’s position. Mark Hall will also be
attending the Principals’ Conference so I will be able to
connect with him and find out how things are going for him
as the new Principal of Walcha Central School.
The Stephanie
Alexander Kitchen
Garden is starting to
take form here at NICS.
Thanks to the work of
Ms. Johnston and her
team and the
assistance of Mr
Vaughan and his
construction students.
This initiative is also
being assisted by the generous support of Deana Durisic. This
partnership has been established by Mrs. Lorraine Hardgrave.
We hope that one day Deana can come to the school and see
the great work that has been achieved with her financial
support.
Once again NICS was treated to a wonderful free concert on Friday, 22nd May, during the Country Music Festival. Every year an array of talented singers and musicians perform for the students and it’s always lots of fun. It was great to see Tori Darke, Cheryl Anderson, Anne Kirkpatrick, Roo Arcus and many others ‘strut their stuff’ and both headliners - Suzanne Lynch and James Blundell – also appeared. Some highlights included Glen Moffatt belting out Eagle Rock and James Ray, from Arkansas by way of NZ, leading the school in a rousing rendition of Sweet Home Alabama. Lesley Nia Nia also impressed with a soulful version of It’s All About the Bass.
We were lucky, too, to have Suzanne Lynch and Kylie Austin working with our music pupils, later in the day, on vocal exercises and microphone technique. Their expertise and experience was very encouraging. Thanks to all the entertainers for visiting NICS and to Jen Buffett, and the Festival team, for ensuring that staff and students had such an enjoyable time.

be picked up from Kingston at the end of Cross country.
Kelly Concert As part of our Creative Arts unit this term, K-2 students have been
listening to Peter and the Wolf. We were lucky enough to be
introduced to some of the instruments used in Peter and the Wolf last
Wednesday at a concert at school. A big thank you to Ethan, Jonny,
Jude, Grace, Jemima and Reuben Kelly who entertained us with some
fantastic playing of several string instruments! K-2 was very
impressed by the skill shown by our performers and the dedication
they put in to practicing every day. Well done also K-2 on being a
great audience with respectful listening skills!

K-2 Lorax Costumes for School Concert Dear Parents,
As you may have read in the newsletter, we are performing “The Lorax” for our school concert. K-2 students
will be the animals in the truffalo forest. We are currently investigating costumes and have found some animal
onesies at a reasonable price - $20.
At our last concert, parental feedback was very positive about the purchase of a costume rather than you needing
to go to the trouble of making one. We think this is a great option and will begin the ordering process now to en-
sure we have them on island in time.
Could you please send in $20 to the school office as you are able. If it is easier, you could pay for the costume
by 4 instalments of $5. Costumes will be taken home by your child after the final night of the concert.
Thank you, Helen Pedel, Tanya Delaney, Michelle Hayes, Gill Brown

some great costumes.
