METHODS OF MOVING MATERIALS Methods of moving materials includes equipment that

is used to move materials inside a factory.

This equipment can be divided into the following fivecategories.

    1. Industrial trucks.

    2. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)

    3. Rail guided vehicles.4. Conveyors.

    5. Cranes and hoists.

    1) INDUSTRIAL TRUCKS Industrial trucks divide

into two types: non-powred and powered.

    Non-powered trucks areplatforms or containers

with wheels that arepushed or pulled byhuman workers to move

    materials. Powered industrial trucks

    are steered by humanworkers.

    2) AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLES AGVs are battery-powered,

automatically steered vehiclesthat follow defined pathwaysin the floor.

AGVs are used to move loadsbetween load and unloadstations in the facility.

Routing variations arepossible, meaning thatdifferent loads move betweendifferent stations.

They are interfaced withother systems to achieve thefull benefits of integratedautomation.

3)RAIL GUIDED VEHICLES These are vehicles that ride

on a fixed rail systems thatis either on the floor or

    suspended form theceiling.

The vehicles operateindependently and areusually driven by electric

    motors. Like AGVs routing

    variations are possible inrail-guided vehicles.

    4)CONVEYORS Conveyors constitute a

large family of materialtransport equipmentthat are designed tomaterials over fixedpaths, generally in largequantities or volumes.

    5) CRANES AND HOISTS These are handling devices

    for lifting, lowering, andtransporting materials,

often as very heavy loads. Hoists accomplish vertical

    lifting: both manuallyoperated and powered

types are available. Cranes provide horizontal

travel and generallyinclude one or more hoists.

AUTOMATED STORAGE SYSTEMSAutomated storage systems are systems that reduce or

eliminate the amount of human intervention requiredto operate the system.

Automated storage systems can be divided into to twotypes:

    1. Automated storage/retrieval systems.

    2. Carousel storage systems.

    1) Automated storage/retrieval systemsAn automated storage

/retrieval systems(AS/RS) can be definedas a storage systems thatperforms storage andretrieval operations withspeed and accuracy

    under a defined degreeof automation.

    2) Carousel storage systemsA carousel storage

system consists of aseries of bins or basketssuspended from an over-head chain conveyor thatrevolvers around a longoval rail system

The purpose of the chainconveyor is to positionbins at a load/unloadstation at the end of theoval.

    2) Carousel storage systems Carousels can be classified as horizontal and vertical.

The structure of a horizontal carousel storage system

consists of welded steel frame-work that supports thaoval rail system.

Vertical carousels are constructed to operate around avertical conveyor loop. They occupy much less floor

space than the horizontal configuration, but requiresufficient over head space.
