OccupationalTherapists(OT)areprofessionalswhoassistpeopleexperiencingdifficultyineverydayactivities.OT’sassesstheperson’sskillstodetermineanyunderlyingdifficultieswhichmaybeimpactingontheirperformance.OT’smayworkwiththeindividualtodeveloptheirskillsinthefollowingareas:

• DAiLy LiviNG SkiLLS–e.g.mealtimeskills,dressing,bathing,toileting,sleeping.Forolderchildren/adultsthismayincludetaskssuchascatchingpublictransport,managingmoneyandmealpreparation

• PLAy, LEiSuRE, SkiLLS–e.g.howtoplaywithtoys,playingtogether,engaginginageappropriateleisureactivities,developmentofsocialskillstointeractwithothersandbuildrelationships

• SENSORy PROCESSiNG–e.g.howthepersonprocessesinformationfromtheirsenses(e.gtaste,touch,sound,smell,bodyawareness,movement)andtheimpactofsensorydifficultiesondailylife

• FiNE MOTOR SkiLLS-e.g.usingtwohandstogether,colouring,drawing,threading,writing,tooluse,managingfastenings,etc.TheOTassessesunderlyingreasonsforfinemotordifficultiesandprovidestherapeuticsupporttoimprovefunction

• GROSS MOTOR SkiLLS–e.g.crawling,sittingup,running,jumping,hopping,skipping,bodyawareness,coordination,climbing.TheOTassessesunderlyingreasonsforgrossmotordifficultiesandprovidestherapeuticsupporttoimprovefunction.

• MANAGiNG BEHAviOuR, ORGANiSATiONAL SkiLLS, STRESS AND ANxiETy – e.g. toengagewithinthecommunityandinteractwithotherpeople,differentskills.

• WORk SkiLLS–eganalysisofworkdemandsanddevelopmentofappropriateskillsrelatedtothetasksofwork

Differentskillsarerequiredatdifferentstagesofaperson’slife.AnOTwillassessthepersonanddevelopaprogrambasedonindividualneed.OTprofessionalsmayimplementspecificassessmentsanddevelopplanstohelpguidethemanagementandinterventionwithregardtospecificskillareas.Thismayincludemobiilty,continence,ormealtimeskillsandneeds.

OT’smayworkwiththeindividualandfamily/keystakeholdersinthedevelopmentofprogramstosupporttheindividual,andmayprescribeequipmentorresourcestoassistinfunctionaloutcomes.
