What is self-esteem?

‘Esteem’ means respect and admiration, usually for a person.

Self-esteem means to think well of ourselves – to feel proud and confident about who we are and what we can do.

You have 3 minutes to label a stick person with the things you LIKE about yourself and the things you would improve. Think of:

Personality

Appearance

Abilities…

Everyone needs praise sometimes, it helps their self-esteem

You will each be given a post-it-note with the name of someone in your class in it

Write down a compliment (ONLY a compliment!) about them and stick it to my whiteboard

What is Bullying?

Bullying is when a person intentionally tries to harm, hurt or intimidate someone. It usually takes place over a period of time, with repeated ‘attacks’.

Bullying severely damages self-esteem. It can make life unbearable for victims and have long lasting effects.

Look at how Sesame Street explains it:

What can we learn from this clip?

1. What types of bullying are there?

2. How do you think the victim feels?

3. What was the outcome for a) the bully b) the victim?

4. Why do you think this rap has been made?
