DESCRIPTION

Coffee originally comes from the highlands in Ethiopia. Over 1500 years ago, it was taken to Arabia, then Europe and then to the Americas. It was only in the late 19th century when Australia started to grow coffee commercially. In the 1800's, Australian coffee was well received in Europe and even won a few medals in London. It was the high labour costs that lead to the decline in Australia's coffee production. They just could not compete with places like Brazil, Indonesia, Africa and the Americas. Coffee production picked up again in the late 1980's when machine harvesting was introduced to the market. This allowed the producers to reduce their harvesting costs and they could once again compete with other coffee producers.
