(5) AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND: THEATRICAL MARKET COMMENTARY Australia is a fully mature theatrical and home entertainment market which punches well above its weight in the film business; despite a population of just 24.5 million (not even in the world Top 50 – although increasing fast), it is nonetheless the fifth largest market in the world for US movies. There is also a well-established arthouse circuit which has changed quite a lot over the past 25 years. Established players like Palace and Ronin have faded; boutique operator Sharmill now mainly handles event-cinema screenings of plays, operas and concerts; and the arthouse market is dominated by brash newcomer Madman Entertainment, set up in 1997, initially specialising in Manga titles but now handling arthouse and crossover films. In 2016, Madman released 43 movies – more than any other distributor except local major Village Roadshow and with the count increasing annually. Madman handled three of the four German films released in Australia in that year. Many of the company’s releases, however, were given a very brief theatrical window before shifting onto DVD and, above all, VOD. The country’s cinematic infrastructure is wholly up-to-date and almost totally digital, with the number of screens increasing slightly (by just 6%) over the seven years surveyed. That amounts to a healthy one screen per 11,500 people. Admissions tailed off marginally in the middle of the period reviewed, then began to climb back in 2014 and ended the period pretty much where they began. Box office similarly remained stable when allowance is made for the fact that totals have been calculated from Australian dollars via US to Euros – three currencies which have shifted considerably in relationship to one another over the past decade. For a medium-sized market, Australia releases a large number of films each year (usually over 400), although that may be because films for a ‘new Australian’ audience are tracked – something which is not the case for ethnic programming in most territories. 115 of the films released (over 20% of all releases), were from India, 33 from China, 18 from Korea, 13 from the Philippines, and 12 from Japan in 2016, virtually all of them popular rather than arthouse. European releases, meanwhile, average between 80 and 90, after boom years (see opening table) in 2011 and 2012. Domestic films generally account for between 4-5% of the Australian market, with fluctuations in years like 2015, when MAD MAX: FURY ROAD helped make that year’s admissions to local films the highest for half a decade. Ticket prices when expressed in Euros likewise reflect the decline in the Australian dollar against that currency by 12% between 2011-2015. Expressed in $AUS, prices have risen by over 50% in the period surveyed. Surveyed over the seven-year period, German films had an average market share of just over 0.25%, with 2016 one of the weakest on record. Of the 40 German films released in Australia between 2011 and 2016, only around a quarter were subtitled, the remainder being either children’s movies (and therefore dubbed) or made in English in the first place. The best-performing titles were also English-language, headed by

RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION (2012) and THE THREE MUSKETEERS (2011). Seven German films took over a million AUS$ theatrically: THE LAST STATION in 2010; THE THREE MUSKETEERS in 2011; RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION and A DANGEROUS METHOD in 2012; CLOUD ATLAS in 2013; and LOVE, ROSIE in 2014. No German film released in 2015 or 2016 crossed the million-dollar threshold. The highest grossing German-language film of the period was PHOENIX, with just over 30,000 admissions. Among co-productions, films which took over AUS$5 million at the box office were, with the exception of Scandi noir film MÄN SOM HATAR KVINNOR and French-produced English-language thriller UNKNOWN, all US or UK, with the list headed, not surprisingly, by THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 2, which took over AUS$20 million. With the exception of TARZAN 3D, none of the German-produced children’s animation titles released over the period surveyed drew large audiences, despite the fact that one of them, DIE BIENE MAJA - DER KINOFILM, was a co-production with Australia, where Maja would have been already familiar to young audiences thanks to a regular slot on the ABC network. Insofar as it is possible to draw conclusions from so small a sample, it seems Australian audiences prefer their German films edgy and historical, with WWII and life in the former East Germany a recurring theme. In brief, the conditions exist for German films to be delivered to Australian audiences theatrically as well as on DVD and on VOD. But to date, local buyers’ preference has been for more ‘familiar’ foreign-language films, notably French ones; and it will take a breakthrough title for German titles to find their audience. As a market open to promotion, however, Australia shows considerable promise. New Zealand tends to be lumped together in cinematic terms with Australia, despite the distance between the two countries being the same as that between London and Moscow. In terms of film production, the smaller territory is fiercely independent, but distribution tends to follow similar patterns as across the Tasman in Australia, with eight of the 13 distributors listed in Section (4) being local subsidiaries of Australian companies. As a market it is small, but an annual box office total of EUR 134 million is hefty for a country of less than 5 million people, reflected likewise in a high per capita ratio of cinemagoing. New Zealand, in other words, is a limited but significant and dynamic market which is not easy to predict. Many of the same films show up annually as in Australia (or for that matter Europe), but there are also some surprises, notably the top film of the seven-year period being THE LAST STATION, and the strong 2014 performance of WWII drama DIE VERLORENE ZEIT, a film which hardly registers elsewhere internationally.

(6) AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND: GERMAN FILMS ON TELEVISION OVERVIEW Australia’s television set-up is similar to the UK one in ways that might not necessarily have been expected. A state-owned channel (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, or ABC) was launched in the 1930s; TV became a common feature of Australian homes in the 1950s; was supplemented by three commercial networks in the 1970s, and is now dominated by Rupert Murdoch. Indeed, the way in which the Murdoch-owned Fox cornered the cable and satellite market in Australia is very similar to what happened with another Murdoch company, Sky, in the UK; Fox took over its only rivals, Austar and Galaxy, just as Sky took over BSB in the UK. At all events, Foxtel now has a monopoly on Australian satellite TV. Foxtel covers urban and rural areas of Australia, with satellite a necessity given the size of the country and its sparse population outside the major metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and, to a lesser extent, Adelaide and Perth. The supplier offers a basic package of 123 channels, divided up as indicated in the first chart on the following page. Of the 10 movie channels, most offer the usual mix of recent blockbusters and made-for-TV fillers. The one exception is World Movies, which is programmed by SBS, originally a publicly owned channel set up to serve the cultural interests of ‘new Australians’ from various corners of the globe, especially South-East Asia. As a result, Australian fans of world cinema are offered a much wider range of films on pay-TV than those in most other countries: over the month surveyed in the chart on the following page (June 2017), viewers could choose from 115 films from 45 different countries, all of them repeated three or more times in the course of the month. Areas represented were Europe (63 titles); Asia (23); North America (14); Latin America (6); the Middle East (5); Australasia (2); and Africa (2). The German titles programmed were a mix of cult movies, New German Cinema classics, small-scale dramas and arthouse hits. Specifically, German titles shown in June were ANGST ESSEN SEELE AUF; BEDWAYS; ELSER - ER HÄTTE DIE WELT VERÄNDERT; FADO; HALLAL LOVE (AND SEX); HIGHWAY TO HELLAS; LITTLE THIRTEEN; PHOENIX; SIE TÖTETE IN EKSTASE; WARNUNG VOR EINER HEILIGEN NUTTE; and WILD.

New Zealand’s TV set-up is somewhat unusual. Geography cuts the NZ market off from most of the rest of the world, but it seems to prosper as an English-speaking market with a relatively wealthy population whose programming was boosted by cable and satellite in the late 1980s, with a wide range of choice supplementing the limited programming offered by TVNZ and the dramas created for it by a flourishing production industry. Sky remains the dominant force in NZ television, with the most unusual aspect of the set-up being that the range of channels is relatively old-fashioned, with movies on TV the biggest category. Also notable are the channels that have been added to the Fox TV server targeted at new New Zealanders from South-East Asia.

New Zealand likewise has a good selection of European movies available in the traditional time-slot format thanks to the programming available from independent distributor Rialto (sampled below from 19-26 November 2017), which is itself unusual in being a New Zealand company which has spread to Australia rather than vice versa. German titles programmed were DER NACHTMAHR and TONI ERDMANN.
