ACTION
Healthy School Environment•In 2015, AUSD launched a new Wellness Policy which demonstrates our commitment to promoting and protecting student’s health, well-
being and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and
exceeding physical activity!
•In 2015, AUSD received $49,586 in Kaiser Permanente grants to improve the nutrition and physical activity environments for students and staff!
• In 2013, AUSD was awarded a 3-year NEOP B grant to improve student and parent health through nutrition education programs.
• Congratulations to our 3 schools receiving the National Healthy Schools Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation! Silver was awarded to Loma Vista and Bronze was awarded to Stokoe and Wells.
• 16,500 healthy meals are served each day by AUSD Child Nutrition Services!
• Students across the district have daily physical activity breaks in our classrooms, getting their bodies moving and minds ready to learn!
• AUSD students receive high-quality physical education for 200 minutes every 10 days in elementary and 400 minutes every 10 days in secondary schools.
WHY WHAT WOWHealthy Celebrations• Class parties and birthday celebrations must
also meet the Wellness Policy requirements. Healthy classroom celebration ideas:
• Stickers, erasers, rulers• Pencils, pens , paper, or markers• Bookmarks, books, highlighters• Activity / game sheets
Healthy Fundraising• Selling non-nutritious foods outside of school
hours may contribute to the development of poor eating habits. Healthy fundraising ideas.
Wellness as a Priority• The 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA)
improved the school meals and set standards for all other foods sold. It further required school districts to revise their wellness policies to include specific implementation, monitoring and communication to stakeholders.
• Effective July 1, 2014, the new Smart Snacks in School standards, required by HHFKA, mandates schools offer nutrient-rich snacks.
• The AUSD Wellness Council has rolled out a district-wide wellness policy consistent with federal guidelines designed to bring the schools together with the parents and the community to implement these standards.
• AUSD encourages non-food fundraisers and celebrations, as stated in the AUSD Wellness Policy. All food/beverages provided to students must meet the Smart Snack guidelines. These standards can be found on AUSDnutrition.org.
