environment analysisHelping companies uncover energy waste to discover energy savings.

Industry accounts or as much asone third o all energy consumption.Staggering increases in energy costs inrecent years have made it more crucialthan ever to fnd ways to reduce energyconsumption. In addition, the globalpush toward greener technologies has

given new importance to sustainabilityprogrammes in companies o all sizesand segments.

To help companies worldwide achievesuch cuts, SKF begins with its clientenergy and environment analysis an extensive, plant-wide assessment toolthat identifes high-energy consumptionareas within an operation. The assessmentalso examines chemical treatments, lubrication use and other operatingprocesses that could be improved to

    reduce environmental impact.

    A cost-eective roadmapto reducing waste

Conducted by a team o experiencedSKF engineers, an SKF client energyand environment analysis combinesqualitative observations about currentplant conditions with industry bestpractices to determine quantitative, achievable targets.

Once waste areas are identifed, theclient energy and environment analysisoers a range o solutions to reduce them without sacrifcing production capacityor signifcant capital outlay. SKF solutionscan range rom machine upgrades toadvanced machine maintenance andcondition monitoring.

    Real-world results

Ater conducting an SKF client energyand environment analysis in one o

our own bearing actories, we were ableto identiy an opportunity that wouldenable SKF to reuse waste heat to heatthe entire actory. This translated tomillions o kilowatt-hours worth osavings by reducing the large amountpurchased at present.

In another example, resulting rom anSKF service contract, SKF was able toidentiy energy reduction opportunitieso 4 % or the clients compressors, cutlubricant consumption by 18 % and

increase production by 30 % simply bychanging maintenance practices.

Another SKF client reduced lubricantconsumption to 10 % o the plantsoriginal use within three years.

    The energy challenge

An oil refnery in the U.S. had installedequipment capable o meeting itsdaily power requirements o 52 MW.Unortunately, operational concernswere orcing the plant to limit its powergeneration to 40 MW per day. To makeup the daily dierence, the refnery wasorced to purchase 12 MW rom thelocal utility, at a cost o $100 000 per

    week.

    The SKF solution

Following an extensive analysis, SKFemployed a combination o advancedvibration analysis and machinediagnostics to help the refnery

Anatomy o hidden energy savingsUsing a variety o inspection technologiessuch as thermography and vibrationanalysis, SKF energy specialists helpcompanies discover energy reductionopportunities in every corner o theplant. The example shown here involvesound energy within a typical electricmotor pump.

    1. ElectricmotoranalysisAdvanced diagnostics and monitoring canreduce energy use by up to 5 %

    2. PrecisionalignmentProperly aligned machinery consumes

    315 % less energy

    3. LubricationandsealingOptimum lubrication and sealing methods

can cut energy use by 12 %

    4.HydraulicsVibration analysis allows hydraulic

    improvements that can cut energy

    use by 35 %

    5. PrecisionbalancingProper balancing can reduce energyconsumption by 15 %

discover the megawatts it neededwithin its existing equipment. In theend, SKF energy and environmentalservices increased the plants dailypower output by the 12 MW itrequired.

    The savings

Helping the refnery meet its dailypower requirements meant that it nolonger had to purchase the additional12 MW per day rom the local utility. Inthe end, SKF energy and environmentalservices helped the refnery save thatadditional $100 000 per week, ora yearly savings o over $5 million.
