July Meeting at John Gillespies’ Pond

We  were  actually  a  little  crowded  onto  John’s  patio  because  he  keeps  adding  to  his  pond.  That’s  okay  because  we’re  there  to  see  the  pond  and  the  fish.  John  has  a  nice  collection  of  koi.  He  seems  to  favor  Utsuri.  He  has  at  least  one  of  each;  Shiro  Utsuri,  Hi  Utsuri,  and  Ki  Utsuri.  Utsuri  are  a  solid  color  with  a  black  pattern,  frequently  tiger  striped.  Shiro  are  white  and  black,  Hi  are  red  and  black,  and  Ki  are  yellow  and  black.              On  the  side  of  the  house  are  several  of  his  fry  tanks.  Each  one  houses  a  different  stage  of  fry  development.  Unless,  of  course,  you  loose  an  entire  batch,  which  happens.                          The  grilled  hot  dog  buffet  was  fabulous.  Chips  of  course,  but  salads,  fruit,  and  pie  for  desert.

Pond Tour…stuff you gotta know            It  seems  like  we’ve  been  beating  on  this  horse  for  a  long  time,  and  we  have.  Now  the  tour  is  a  month  away  and  it’s  to  get  down  to  the  real  nitty  gritty.  (I’ll  wait  for  a  while  until  that  song  imbeds  itself  into  your  brain…If  you  have  no  idea  what  I’m  talking  about,  that’s  okay  too.)            The  Pond  Tour  serves  a  lot  of  functions.  It  is  entertaining  and  educational.  You  get  to  see  10  different  ponds,  but  more  importantly,  you  get  to  talk  to  the  owners  and  docents  about  fish,  filters,  pumps,  all  sorts  of  stuff.  It’s  also  the  only  major  fundraiser  this  club  has  had  in  the  past  4  or  5  years.  This  is  also  an  excellent  opportunity  to  recruit  more  members.  While  you’re  on  the  tour  don’t  forget  to  meet  new  people,  introduce  yourself  and  invite  them  to  come  to  the  next  meeting  and  join  the  club.              The  tour  is  listed  in  Koi  USA’s  Calendar  of  Events  section  on  page  12  of  the  July/August  issue.  We  have  sent  a  press  release  to  Sactown  magazine  and  SNR.  If  you  know  of  other  venues  that  might  advertise  for  us  please  let  me  (Bob)  know.  We  also  have  a  flyer  in  the  form  of  a  display  card  that  we  have  begun  to  display  at  some  of  the  koi  dealers  in  the  area.  Advance  tickets  will  not  be  sold.  Admission  will  be  charged  when  you  arrive  at  the  first  pond.            To  start  the  tour  in  the  North,  heading  South,  go  to  218  Orange  Blossom  Circle  in  Folsom  at  10am.  If  you  want  to  start  South  and  head  North,  go  to  1030  Appollo  Way  in  Sacramento  at  10am.  (Note  that  “Appollo”  has  two  p’s  and  two  l’s.  When  you  arrive  at  the  first  location  and  pay  your  fees,  you’ll  receive  the  Tour  Program  which  is  your  guide  and  ticket  to  the  rest  of  the  tour.              We  are  still  looking  for  volunteer  docents  to  help  out  at  a  few  of  the  ponds.  There  will  be  a  tour  for  the  benefit  of  the  pond  owners  and  docents  on  the  Friday  prior  to  the  tour.  Camellia  members  that  are  not  working  the  event  will  be  charged  admission.  Four  of  the  10  ponds  on  the  tour  are  not  Camellia  members  so  this  may  be  your  only  chance  to  see  these  ponds.    Contacts:  Bob….    [email protected]                                                                            Sam….  [email protected]

The Meeting, Koi Auction, and Ice Cream Social date is Moved Up To August 24 (to  accommodate  the  Labor  Day  weekend)

The Place…is  the  Carlson’s.  Come  for  the  meeting,  wander  through  the  Rose  Garden,  oogle  the  koi  in  the  10,000  gallon  pond,  buy  &/or  sell  fish.  AND!  Eat  ice  cream!  The  address  is  8725  Spooner  Ct.,  Granite  Bay,  95746.      Here’s  the  link  for  the  map:  https://www.google.com/maps/place/8725+Spooner+Ct,+Granite+Bay,+CA+95746/@38.74039,-‐121.161551,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x809ae2229da8247f:0x8acf43ade30c4e7c                As  for  the  potluck,  it’s  ice  cream  and  we  have  lots  of  it.  What  we  need  are  toppings  and  sides.  Toppings  like  sauce,  nuts,  whipped  cream,  etc.  Sides  like  a  fruit  platter,  brownies,  pie,  etc.  But  please,  email  the  Carlson’s  and  let  them  know  what  you’re  bringing.

The Koi Auction            Perhaps  you’d  like  to  auction  a  fish  or  two,  here’s  the  details.

1. You  must  be  a  Camellia  Koi  Club  member  to  sell.  Annual  membership  is  only  $30.  2. You  don’t  have  to  be  a  member  to  buy.  (Bring  your  friends)  3. If  you  are  the  top  bidder,  you  pay  Camellia  Koi  Club.  CKC  keeps  ½  and  the  fish  seller  gets  ½.  4. You  can  pay  with  cash  or  by  check.  5. You  must  bring  your  fish  in  a  bag,  no  buckets  or  mason  jars  please.  If  you  bring  two  fish  in  the

same  bag,  the  bag  will  be  auctioned  as  one  item.  It  would  be  better  to  bring  two  fish  in  separate  bags.  If  you  can,  don’t  feed  for  5  days  prior  to  bagging  your  fish.

6. Don’t  bring  diseased  or  injured  fish  7. Bags  will  be  available  (free)  at  the  July  meeting.  We  will  also  discuss  “how  to”  at  the  meeting.    8. Oxygen  will  be  added  to  your  bag(s)  when  you  arrive.  9. In  the  unlikely  event  that  your  fish  doesn’t  sell,  you  must  take  it  home.

If  you  still  need  bags,  call  Bob  and  he’ll  try  to  accommodate  you.  916-‐428-‐7640

You  may  be  thinking  “Why  would  I  want  to  buy  a  fish  that  someone  else  doesn’t  want?”  To  answer  that  question  you  might  want  to  go  to  a  pet  or  aquarium  store  and  look  at  the  koi  they  sell.  For  the  most  part  all  you’ll  find  are  grade  C  koi.  CKC  members  generally  purchase  their  fish  from  koi  dealers  who  only  sell  the  higher  grades  of  koi.  The  hand-‐me–downs  that  might  show  up  at  the  auction  are  going  to  be  better  than  average  fish.              To  use  the  phrase  “One  man’s  trash  is  another  man’s  treasure.”  doesn’t  sound  right  in  this  case.  There  are  a  myriad  of  reasons  to  auction  off  koi  that  are  certainly  not  trash.  The  most  common  reason  is  that  your  pond  may  be  over  grown  and  over  populated.  Perhaps  you  have  last  year’s  pond  spawn  to  thin  out.  Maybe  you  have  too  many  males  and  want  to  make  room  for  some  females,  or  you  only  want  females  or  males.              Then  there’s  the  ugly  fish.  There,  I’ve  said  it.  Ugly,  like  beauty,  is  in  the  eye  of  the  beholder.  It’s  a  personal  preference.  I  bought  a  little  guy  last  fall,  a  shiro  bekko.  I  bought  him  because  the  sumi  markings  on  him  are  more  rounded  like  stepping  stones  as  opposed  to  the  random,  jagged  markings  you  normally  see.  It  wasn’t  until  I  got  him  home  that  I  noticed  that  he’s  doitsu,  scaleless.  Since  I’m  not  a  big  fan  of  fish  without  scales,  he’ll  be  up  for  auction.            As  a  buyer,  you’ll  be  able  to  prevue  all  of  the  fish.  The  bags  will  be  floating  in  Duane’s  large  Q  tank.  You  can  pick  up  the  bag  to  see  the  bottom  of  the  fish  if  you  like.              Here’s  a  youtube  link  to  watch  Georgia  auction  off  a  fish.    (Turn  your  volume  up)  www.youtube.com/watch?v#21471C
