ow…a great time was had by

all at the July 12th Save-A-Pet poker run. This is the first poker run I have been on in

years and I have to say that if you missed this one it was your loss. Fantastic weather, good route, good roads, great people, lots of cat & dog pets, plenty of food and most importantly, we all arrived at the endpoint safe and sound. I know it‘s hard to believe but the riding season is already almost half

over. I have been on some great club rides and I hope that those of you that have not made any of the club rides this year find some time to get out and enjoy the (somewhat) summery weather. Winter will be upon us before you know it so get out and enjoy the weather we have now.

I personally have gotten in a couple of long rides that have been a lot of fun. I just returned from a week long ride (Jul 18-26) through Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland and ending up in West Virginia at a BMW Rally. I don‘t think you can find a straight road in West Virginia that that is more than 200 feet long. I have already scheduled 4-day work weeks by arranging to be off Fridays for all of August. I want to remind you all about the upcoming Memorial Run on Sunday, August 9th, the River Road Overnight Run on August 15th and 16th, as well as the Sunrise Breakfast Run on Sunday, August 30th. Additional Info on these events can be found in the newsletter and on the JPC web-site. You guys have all been doing a great job attending these events, let‘s keep it up.

I look forward to your continuing participation. August is upon us, we need everyone to be thinking about the 2010 events Planning Meeting. We are in need of volunteers to chair recurring existing events, as well as welcoming any and all new ideas for events. Our goal, as always, is to have fun and enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow Cruisers and

THIS JUST IN: in case you haven‘t heard, the constitutional amendment concerning the club vest did not receive the affirmative votes of the 2/3 majority of the membership present, as dictated by the club by-laws, and was defeated at the July 28th combined meeting. I want to thank George Gauss, as a relatively new member, for taking on the task of such a controversial subject and I want to thank all my fellow Cruisers who attended this meeting, with a special thanks to those that participated in the process by offering their opinions and contributed to the evening‘s lively discussion of the proposal.

Duck Creek, Fall Campout?

t was a cold October evening, oh wait, it

was a cold July evening, but who cared, we

had a great campfire to keep us warm as the

weenies roasted on the grill and the people

carried over their appetizers and desserts.

Okay, so the weather wasn’t great but as we

gathered around the campfire everyone seemed

happy and content with their stomachs full of hot

dogs, baked beans, chips and dips and a special

Detroit Chili that Debi and Bill Vallas had brought

from Florida. Now go figure that you have to go to

Florida to get Detroit Chili. I wonder if that means

you have to go to Detroit for Florida oranges.

All the vehicles were in a circle, oh no wait,

the Indians weren’t attacking, it was the mosquitoes

that were attacking, so I guess we all had our own

campsites with a bottle of OFF in hand.

At 7:30 on Saturday morning, the Vietnam

Vets had a pancake breakfast in the campground and

it was great, all you can eat for $5.00, how could you

go wrong. Pancakes cooked on a rotating grill,

scrambled eggs and sausage as well as coffee, milk

and juice rounded out a great breakfast.

At 9:30 we all met for a 140 mile ride. As we

lined up to go, the campground owner took pictures

and other campers stood in awe as we mounted up

and rode out. I have to admit that riding in the back

of the pack has it’s advantages, you get to see how

nice all the bikes look going up and down the hills

and around the turns.

The roads were great and basically we stayed

together through the few lights we encountered. Oh,

but there was that one time that some of the bikes,

with a masked man and his sidekicks, oh wait, it was

George and a group that got a little misplaced from

the rest of the pack. In all fairness, we had a couple

of bikes stop and George, being the good guy that he

is, pulled over to help get them back on track.

But of course, by that time, it was kind of

hard for him to tell where our tracks went. George

had his faithful companions searching for our tracks

but alas, it took Archie going back to find them and

to get them back on the right track. Thanks, Kimo-

sabie.

When we started feeling the pangs of hunger,

we stopped for some dried salt pork, no that’s not

right, we stopped at a Pizza Buffet, where they not

only had great pizza, but they had yummy dessert

pizza’s with warm blueberries, peaches or apples.

As we started back to the campground,

twisting and turning through some beautiful

evergreen lined roads, we saw sand cranes and deer

in the fields. Even though the sky was cloudy and

gray, our fearless leader brought us home safe and

sound.

When we all settled down from the ride we

played BINGO. Yes that’s right, we are all getting

older, but hell, we had a good time. The fire was

roaring trying to take the chill off the forest, oh I

mean the campsite, and the treats were set out. After

all, it might have been a couple of hours since our

last feeding.

It was decided that we would all go up to the

campgrounds restaurant for dinner before returning

back to camp for more treats, talk and warmth from

another roaring fire. As we sat around enjoying the

end of our day, we decided that next year we would

try and have the campout during the summer when it

would be warm and sunny.

In the morning, we all started getting ready

for the trip home but before going, we rode for more

Food. Hey it had been at least 11 or 12 hours since

our last meal. You want us all to starve?

It was a great weekend, regardless of the

weather and I want to thank Steve Mendel for doing

all the leg work to make this campout special.

Save-A-Pet

t was a beautiful, hot, summer day on Sunday, July 12th as many pet lovers arrived to help the Save-A-Pet shelter.

Not a cloud in the sky but there were plenty of rain drops from the eyes of many of the sad residents of the shelter who were not able to go home with one of the visitors. Michelle at Pets Plus when first contacted just said, ―Where have you guys been? We‘ve been waiting for you!‖ They went out of their way to accommodate the event. The 80 mile route of the poker run included some really nice roads. All of the attendees have Dan Schenk to thank for not getting steered in the direction of Canada! Don was initiated into what ―chairing an event‖ was all about and went out of his way by volunteering his brother‘s truck to haul all of the food and other items from the starting point to SAP…way to go Don! That‘s called ―volunteer by association,‖ a Cruiser invention.

When I strutted into Save-A-Pet, (one day long before the event) they had a Harley on display that was donated: raffle tickets were being sold. I asked to speak to someone about the bike. This is where Frank Corbi came into the picture. Standing there in the middle of the room, I held out my hand and said I was from the Cruisers. The smiles on the faces of the volunteers and workers on duty that day, lit up the room. They missed us and our efforts to support them. Frank, a Beemer rider, went way too far out of his way to make sure they had everything set up and waiting for the workers when they showed up for our event. Frank was also responsible for getting the word out to his fellow riders. It was this dedication to SAP that gave me an idea to have a ―Sign Me‖ puppy at registration for all attendees to autograph. It was then presented to Frank at the ending point. Speaking of which….. Karen and Pat, of Pat‘s Pizza in Grayslake, have been supporting SAP and the local community for years. They offered a HUGE slice of pizza, a salad, and endless soda for $9. How big you say? Well ―Holy Sh#T‖ and ―JEEEEESUS‖ were some of the comments that were bandied about. I was witness to a portly ex-Cruiser who was waving a napkin in surrender because he had too much to eat: considering it is the food of his heritage I was impressed. What Pat did then, was to take $2 from that per person price and donate it back to SAP. Anyone brave enough to order another slice was charged $2 with half of it donated back to SAP………..A GOOD deal from good people. Thanks to Carol & Mike Lisciandrello who pulled double duty by twisting the arms of people for 50/50 and collecting most of the door prizes for the event. Because of their efforts, everyone who made it to the end point went home with a door prize. The 3 top poker hands were able to ride home and order a pizza with their winnings. The Cruisers wish to thank the following companies for their generous donations and support for our event. It is through the efforts of the JPC‘s that a total of $1370 was donated to SAP ($1100 JPC‘s, $150 Law Tigers,$120 Pat‘s Pizza). ………….Not bad for a bike ride to pet a puppy and cradle a kitty!

Electric Harley Davidson Concept oncept bike designer Nicolas Petit has designed an electric Harley Davidson. I bet that‘s

going to sit tough with the Harley crowd. The story does not mention anything about this actually being endorse by the Harley Davidson company. But I bet it‘s a good way for Nicolas to bring attention both to himself and the whole eco question.

I admit I‘m a bit biased towards this. It‘s not that I wouldn‘t ride an electrical Harley. But I would in no

way compare it to what riding my old ‗73 shovel means to me. For me, riding my old boat is a nostalgia trip. It‘s all about the legends, the history of customizing, and paying tribute to the rebellion

against the establishment riding a chopped bike used to mean.

That said, I‘m all for the whole eco wave. I see no reason why commuting vehicles and commercial transport should not be made to pollute as little as possible. As long as they don‘t ban the recreational

use of classic cars and motorcycles.

NISRA is the Winner! (Actually, everyone came out a winner…) By Mary Walters Editor of the Roar (Newsletter of the Top Cats)

ith the final tally coming close to $15,000, NISRA wins! But as the day went on, this event brought out the best in everyone. Many of f the Jersey Pine Cruisers were in attendance supporting our Charity Ride and how awesome is

that when clubs work together? I think that we will see this more often, thanks to many wonderful leaders from all of the local groups! The week-end was blessed with perfect weather. A high of 80 degrees and a gentle breeze made the scene on Sunday very relaxing. The ninety-nine bikers and one-hundred and twenty-two riders all commented on how much they enjoyed the day, the people, and the ride route. Some of those bikers were the members of the Jerseypine Cruisers. We were all enjoying the camaraderie! It was nice to have them there – AND thanks to them for helping with the work!!! The day ran smoothly, and in the end, NISRA children will benefit from all of our fun! ―Life don't get much better than this‖, as Tania Kernaghan sings. On this day, everyone came out a winner! We rode, we ate, we chatted, and we made new friends. As a new Top Cat, it was a great opportunity to see the BIG hearts that are the foundation of our club – and the JPC's! From set-up to clean-up,

people were giving, helping, and offering whatever they could to make this a success. The club name truly represents the spirit of the day. No matter what brought people to the event, the day brought out the

Top Cat in us all!
