MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

Hello Evergreen residents,

Winter is coming soon, and we need to be well-prepared. With the COVID-19 issues, all need to maintain the social distance and follow the “now normal” protocols. Please take extra care when walking outside, taking kids to school, walking your pet, etc.

After a long period of time of waiting, the southwestern leg of Stoney Trail is open. It is an important addition to the city and would help in optimizing commute and enhance traffic flow. Thank you to all worked hard to achieve this milestone.

Events•2020 Annual General Meeting and Social (AGM) will take

place on Thursday, November 19, 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Flames Room at Cardel Rec. Centre. 333 Shawville Blvd. SE. A new board will be elected to serve the community for an-other year.There are some key positions that will be vacant this AGM and we really need the communities help to fill them. They are: Secretary, Webmaster, Volunteer Director, and Grants Di-rector. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact us. If you are a member and not able to attend the AGM, please take the time to download a proxy form, fill it out and return it either by post, or via email to [email protected] with 2020 AGM Proxy’ in the subject line. If returning by post, please allow for postal delivery time. We need a minimum quorum of 20 members for the AGM. For more info related to the AGM, please visit www.myceca.ca/AGM.

•Evergreen Grinch Tree Fundraiser! Please check out the poster in this issue, and on our website and social media, and sup-port the community!

Give back to the community…volunteer with us!A huge thank you goes to our volunteers. Without your help and support, we would not have been able to run our events and programs to serve our lovely Evergreen. We are always looking for people to help and engage in serving our commu-nity.

We have openings for volunteers on the board and on our on-going community events. If you would like to join us, please email our volunteer director at [email protected]. We will send you a brochure for the open positions and details about tasks and average time commitment needed for each position.

CECA TRAFFIC AND SAFETY REPORT

Please slow down, drive safely and watch out for each other!

TRAFFICSlow Down!We need to take action to help keep our community safe for everyone that lives in it. If you have visitors to the area, including contractors, please ask them to slow down. I have witnessed fast traffic on our side streets in the morning and heading home, and to the schools in the evening, because people are late. Please try to get going a bit earlier so that you are not so rushed.

WeatherBy the time you are reading this, I am quite sure some snow has fallen. Did you put your winter tires on? Hav-ing winter tires on greatly improves your stopping dis-tance. This is very important in a community that has lots of children.

School TrafficPlease be extra careful around the schools during pick up and drop off times. We now have four schools that are on short-cut routes through Evergreen and can un-fortunately see increased speeds along Everridge Dr. and Fish Creek Blvd. Once again, I will remind all the parents driving their kids to school to please try and ar-rive early as this will reduce the traffic congestion at the school and make things safer for all. Please do not park in the school bus parking area! Use the schools desig-nated Hug ‘n’ Go area. The pandemic continues but kids are still back in school.

SAFETYLock Your Doors!Over the past few months, there have been reports of break and enters because people have left garage door openers in the car and the man-door in the garage open. Crime of opportunity! Don’t let them into your house!

Don’t Give Away Your Stuff!I have noticed kid’s toys, bikes, scooters, etc. on front yards. Don’t invite your stuff to be taken to be fenced and money used illicitly. Please remind your kids to put their stuff away.

ReportingIf you witness any traffic issues on an ongoing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected], and also via the Traffic Service Request directly to the police. This can be done at http://www. calgary.ca/cps/Pages/Traffic/Traffic-Service-Requests.aspx.

Please report road and sign issues to 311. This can be done online at the 311 app www.spot311.calgary.ca or http://www.calgary.ca/311.

If you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything I have written here, you can email me at [email protected]

Thanks,

Paul Bushell, Traffic Director

COVID didn’t stop Marshall Springs School from plant-ing and harvesting vegetables for the Calgary Food Bank. This spring, we planted peas, potatoes, parsnips, and pumpkins in our courtyard garden beds. A good mix of sunshine and rain over the summer provided the right ingredients for a great harvest. We’re happy to be supporting a local non-profit, like the Calgary Food Bank, through a variety of community initiatives.

SAFE & SOUND

Yielding to Emergency VehiclesTime is the enemy in an emergency. For everyone’s safety, it is important for motorists to understand how to correctly yield right of way to emergency vehicles with lights and siren activated. You can help EMS, police, and fire get to the scene quickly and safely by following these rules of the road:When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated:• If you’re in the middle of an intersection when an

emergency vehicle approaches with lights and siren activated, safely clear the intersection;

• On a one- or two-lane road, motorists should move to the right side of the road, slow down, and then stop. Remember to signal;

• On a road with three or more lanes, motorists should move to the nearest side of the road and stop. If driv-ing in the centre lane, move to the right side of the road and stop. Remember to signal;

• Come to a complete stop and wait for the emergency vehicle to pass. Shoulder check for more emergency vehicles (there is often more than one) before re-en-tering traffic flow. Remember to signal;

• Emergency vehicles might use any available road space to maneuver. This could include the shoulders, turning lanes, in order to pass other traffic.

When operating a vehicle:• Drive attentively and defensively at all times. Be cogni-

zant to sirens and be prepared to yield the right of way;• It is Alberta law for motorists to slow down to at least

60 km/hour (unless a lower speed is posted) when driving in the lane next to a stopped emergency ve-hicle, including tow trucks, with their lights activated. If you’re not in the lane next to the stopped vehicles, reduce speed and leave lots of space between your-self and emergency personnel.

• Do not break the rules of the road in order to give right of way to an emergency vehicle. This could include pro-ceeding through a red light, or making an illegal turn. Actions such as these jeopardize all motorists in the area;

• Drivers must place their full attention on the roadway and toward the safe operation of their vehicle at all times. The fine for distracted driving in Alberta is $287.00;

• Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle and an emergency vehicle, should it be required to stop suddenly.

Do You Love Fish Creek Provincial Park?As you know, Fish Creek Provincial Park is an essential resource for the community that provides countless op-portunities for people to celebrate nature and to enjoy much-needed time to unwind. In recent months, per-haps you have had a chance to explore an unfamiliar area of the park or taken advantage of the many kilo-metres of paved pathways that run through the park. Fish Creek Provincial Park is here for your enjoyment and is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and appre-ciate nature within the city, all of which has immense benefits for both physical and mental well-being. The Friends Fish Creek are committed to the sustainability of this park and work to ensure that future generations can enjoy it as much as we do today. As a member of the Fish Creek Community, we invite you to show your love for this park this autumn through the Friends’ I Love Fish Creek Program, featuring a variety of ways to support the Friends and our conservation efforts in Fish Creek Provincial Park. The November Fish Creek Speaker Series Once They Were Hats: A Brief History of a Radical RodentThursday, November 19, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm, onlinePresented by Frances Backhouse, Award-Winning Jour-nalist and Author

There is a lot of history behind our present-day deal-ings with Castor canadensis. The beaver conflicts that we are working to manage today are in many ways a legacy of the colonial fur trade. The beaver benefits that we are still learning about are rooted in millennia of beaver presence on this continent. This brief history of beavers will begin with their debut 37 million years ago, fast forward through the rise and fall of the dozens of early species, and then zero in on what’s happened to North American beavers since Europeans showed up 500 years ago. As our relationship with beavers con-tinues to evolve, a historical perspective can help in-form the future. Registration Required. To register visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/event/beavers-3

Fish Creek Community Terrace If you have been down to the park in recent years, you may have seen the personalised bricks along the path-way in front of the Cookhouse at the Bow Valley Ranch. Close to 300 people have dedicated a brick in support of Fish Creek Provincial Park since 2017. The Friends have begun offering bricks in the next phase of this program - the Fish Creek Community Terrace, which will be built in front of the Cookhouse at the Bow Val-ley Ranch. This is a great opportunity to leave a legacy in the park and to show your support for the work the Friends do. If you have a small business, please consid-er this opportunity to promote your business through dedicating a brick. Bricks are only $250.00 and you will receive a tax receipt. To dedicate a brick please visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/brick

Membership Shows You CareThe Friends of Fish Creek invite you to renew your com-mitment to Fish Creek Provincial Park for the 2020 – 2021 season. Members receive admission to Fish Creek Speaker Series presentations, a discount on the popu-lar Birding Course, discounts at select local businesses, and regular updates on programs and events in Fish Creek Provincial Park. As our community was present-ed with significant challenges starting last spring, the Friends were able to adapt to the situation because of the support from volunteers, donors, partners, funders, and members. We have begun using a new online sys-tem that has made renewing your membership and donating easier than ever before! To renew please visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/membership, call 403-238-3841 ex. 1, or mail in a cheque to the Friends of Fish Creek (ATTN: Membership). As an alternative to annual membership renewals, you may be interested in the Park Protector program. This monthly donor pro-gram may suit your busy lifestyle, as a fixed contribu-tion will be effortlessly and automatically withdrawn from a credit card and there is no need for annual re-newals. Park Protectors receive monthly updates on how their donation is making a difference and a valu-able annual tax receipt.
