August, 2017
Dear Lutherville Family and Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another exceptional year. Very soon the classrooms and hallways will be filled
with the energy and enthusiasm of a community of learners.
We would like to welcome new members to the community. Welcome to our kindergarten families as well as all other new
enrollments. You are an important part of our school. We welcome the following new staff members: Ms. Twila Mills, Front
Office Secretary, Ms. Tracy Wright, Reading Teacher, and Ms. Erin Richmond, Kindergarten Teacher.
Our school vision states: Lutherville Lab students will be life-long learners who are college and career ready and responsible
citizens in their everyday lives. As a school community, we will provide instruction that supports the needs of each child
intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
Our goals for this year include maintaining a positive culture through growth mindset, mindfulness, and conscious discipline
practices. Instructionally we will be using small groups to provide differentiated lessons to meet children’s needs. We will also
be both reinforcing basic skills such as phonics and math foundation skills while also challenging students with critical thinking,
creativity, and collaboration. After all, we want the children to be hands on and minds on.
In order to be successful, our children need support from both the home and school. As partners, we need your involvement at
school. Whether volunteering an hour a week to sit with children reviewing flash cards or committing an hour a month to be on
a PTA committee, every bit helps. Please consider volunteering directly with the school by contacting Ms. Walker
([email protected]) or Ms. Miller ([email protected]) and/or volunteering through the PTA by contacting them on
Facebook (Lutherville PTA).
Our partnership also is stronger when we have frequent communication. In addition to our weekly news, you can get
information from our updated school website (http://LuthervilleES.bcps.org), our current blog
(http://LuthervilleiLab.edublogs.org/), and BCPS One (http://bcpsone.bcps.org). You can also follow us on Twitter
(@LuthervilleLab) and Facebook (LuthervilleLab) to catch a glimpse into the daily activities of the school as we post photos,
updates, announcements, and celebrations. Likewise, keeping teachers, the nurse, the counselor, and others informed about
changes at home helps us to support your child. Please feel free to contact me or any staff at the school anytime.
Please keep this mailing as a reference throughout the year. Included with the summer mailing is the annual packet of forms for
you to fill out for each child. Please complete and return it to your child’s teacher on the first day or even better, drop it off
when you come in for Sneak a Peek.
I wake up each day excited for the opportunity to learn new things and help make a difference in the lives of children and
adults. I am excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to partner with you as we support the children. Once again,
welcome back and I hope to see you on Thursday, August 31 at 5:00 for Sneak a Peek!
Sincerely,
R. Matthew Corner
Principal

Arrival and Dismissal
Arrival
School doors open at 9:05. If bringing your child to school by walking or by driving, your child will enter the
building through the gym door. Please keep your child under your supervision until the school door has opened.
Dismissal - Changing your child’s dismissal plan
Dismissal will begin at 3:45. This is later than in the past! Whenever a change in a child’s normal end of
the day dismissal is necessary, a signed note from a parent is required. The notes may be delivered in the
following ways:
· by the student to their teacher or
· scanned and emailed to their teacher and front office ([email protected]) or
· faxed to the front office (fax # 410-887-7804)
If no note is received authorizing a change in dismissal, the student will be dismissed as they normally would.
Although an email only is appreciated, it alone does not authorize a change in dismissal.
Dismissal – Early Dismissal
If an early dismissal is necessary, parents/guardians are to come to the front office to sign out their child(ren).
The front office staff will call into the classroom to request your child’s dismissal. Advance notice of an early
dismissal is always appreciated but not required. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Emergency Contact Form - New Procedure Your child’s Emergency Contact Form is included for your review. It is extremely important that we have
accurate contact information for every child. Please review the form for accuracy, including the plan for your
child in an emergency closing. You may only choose “ride assigned school bus” if your child is currently a bus
rider. While parents/guardians are required to provide telephone numbers for emergencies and student absence
events, parents/guardians now have the opportunity to opt-out of receiving non-emergent/outreach telephone
calls. If changes are needed, please make the correction. If the Emergency Contact Form is accurate, please
check the box at the top corner, NO CHANGES. ALL forms must be returned to school with your child even if
there are no changes.
Volunteers – The children need you!
We are a better school when we have a strong partnership between home and school! There are so many ways
you can be a partner with the school. Regular communications about academics and about your child’s physical
and emotional well-being. You can also volunteer through a variety of activities: cutting out materials,
working in the classroom with children, working with small groups of children to practice basic facts, helping
shelve books in the library, supporting in art or physical education, or many other ways. Just ask a teacher or
even Ms. Walker or Ms. Miller.
You can also support the school by volunteering through the PTA. Bring along a friend and maybe make a new
friend. The PTA coordinates many social events for the school community and always needs support with
planning and implementation. This doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. For more information, visit the
PTA website at www.LuthervillePTA.org or email Ms. Papas at [email protected].
BCPS requires ALL volunteers (including parent chaperones on field trips) to fill out a volunteer application
and receive volunteer training. This can be done in person or online. Please look for future training sessions on
the website and in our newsletters. Parents who are selected to chaperone on field trips will be required to sign
a Chaperone Agreement Form for each event.
We encourage you to complete the training online. Once completed, print a certificate and send to the
school. The online site for training is: http://www.bcps.org/community/volunteer_info/
Contacting your child’s teacher
If you have a question about an assignment, grade, or your child’s behavior, contact the teacher directly. There
are four ways you can contact your child’s teacher.
1. Visit our Website: http://luthervillees.bcps.org Here you may find teachers email addresses.
2. Contact the teacher through BCPS One.
3. Send a note in with your student to the teacher.
4. Call the front office to leave a message (410-887-7800).
Check the calendar for report card distribution dates. Teachers keep grades on the computer and can print an
interim if you request it.

Sign-in System for Visitors The safety of all students and staff in Baltimore County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our
school uses a system for checking in all visitors called V-soft by RaptorWare or Raptor.
When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID, or a
driver’s license to a staff member in the school office. The ID will be scanned and the following information
will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you
in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases. If your name
appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the school to scan your ID, you will not be allowed
access to the school. The only alternative will be to allow the staff to see your ID, verify your first name, last
name, and date of birth to be entered into the system manually. However, this method does not store the
information, and you must do this each time you visit the school. Once you have your ID scanned, you will be
asked to show your ID only on future visits, and your name will be selected from an existing list of previous
visitors.
You will also be asked to check out with the office staff upon leaving the school so that we know
you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming
to school to pick up your child. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept
on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students and schools safe is appreciated.
Attendance It is important for students to arrive on time and attend school every day. Below are the MSDE attendance rules:
A student is counted present for a full day if they are in attendance 4 hours or more of the school day
A student is counted present for a ½ day if they are in attendance for at least 2 hours, but less than 4 hours of the
school day
A student is counted absent if they are in attendance for less than 2 hours of the school day
If you should have any concerns about your child’s attendance, please contact Ms. Owens, Assistant Principal, at
410-887-7800 or [email protected]

News from the Health Suite Susan Vita RN, AE-C, Certified Asthma Educator, School Nurse
Enclosed in this packet is a form that is titled Consent for Administration of Approved Discretionary
Medication and Health Contact Information. This form needs to be completed each year for all students. The
information on this form provides the nurse with an overview of any health problems, allergies, and medications
that a student may be taking in the home. Emergency phone numbers and the names of people who are allowed
to take a student out of the building are also included. The school Nurse is not allowed to administer any over
the counter medications unless they have a completed form on file. Please call me at (410) 560-9886 or send
me an email at [email protected] if your home, work, or cell number changes. When an emergency occurs it
is vital that I have the most current phone numbers so that I will be able to reach you.
Students are not permitted to bring medication of any kind to school per Baltimore County Public
Schools Policy. This policy is written in every student's handbook and it is strictly enforced. Some examples
for you to be aware of include: eye drops, ointments, asthma inhalers, creams, pills, capsules, allergy
medication, ADHD medication, antibiotics, etc.
If you want your child to have medication in school such as an inhaler, a written order by a medical provider
must be supplied and an appropriately labeled pharmacy container must accompany the medical order (you can
request a free 2nd labeled bottle from the pharmacist for the school nurse). I strongly encourage parents with
children who have ADHD, mental health, asthma, or any other health issues that may require medication to be
taken in school to contact their child’s medical provider as soon as possible. Parents may download the
Parent’s Request to Administer Medication in School Form from the Office of School Health Services website
at: http://www.bcps.org/offices/sss/health/ or they can obtain one from my office. For your convenience and
to ensure a smooth start to the school year, it is strongly encouraged that doctor’s orders, medications and any
supplies be brought to school the week of August 28th.
Your child should bring a change of clothes (a pair of pants, shirt, and underpants) to be kept in their locker for
unexpected emergencies (such as food spills, falling in mud, or female hygiene issues).
Students may not use cell phones during the school day. If your child is ill, injured, or just wants me to call you
I will be glad to make the call.

Universal Emergency Response Procedures
What Parents Need to Know
Once an administrator calls for one of the universal emergency responses below, students, employees, service providers,
and visitors are to immediately follow the procedures provided. Notification is to be given in an age appropriate manner.
ALERT STATUS-for use in securing access to buildings, usually a community event.
When a school or office building is under alert status, no one can enter or leave the building
without the principal's or office head's permission. This permission is granted on a case-by-case
basis and usually granted in conjunction with approval by the Baltimore County Police
Department (BCoPD). Parents should not come to a school while the occupants are on alert
status. Parents might place themselves at risk by doing so as the event in the community is
being investigated or handled by the BCoPD.
DROP, COVER, AND HOLD-for use in earthquakes or other imminent danger to a building
or its immediate surroundings.
When the drop, cover, hold response is called, occupants of a building will take cover away
from windows or any areas that are likely to be affected. Parents should not come to a school
while the occupants are under this universal response. Parent might place themselves at risk by
doing so due to the adverse environmental conditions that led to the response.
EVACUATION-for use when conditions outside are safer than conditions inside.
When a school's or office's occupants are told to follow their evacuation procedures, there is a
condition within the building that makes it safer for them to be out of the building. Each school
or office building has designated meeting locations for an evacuation with alternate locations if
necessary. Parents should not come to a school that has evacuated and remove students as this
can disrnpt the accounting procedures that are in place.
LOCKDOWN-for use in protecting building occupants from potential dangers in the building or
outside.
When a school or office building is on lockdown, no one can enter or leave the building.
Movement within the building is restricted and individuals within the building remain behind
locked doors until cleared to move by first responders or the event is deemed over. Parents
should not come to a school while the occupants are on lockdown. Parents might place
themselves at risk by doing so.
SEVERE WEATHER SAFE AREA-for use in severe weather emergencies.
When a severe weather response is called, occupants of a building will take cover away from
windows or any areas that are likely to be affected. Parents should not come to a school while
the occupants are under this universal response. Parents might place themselves at risk by doing
so due to the adverse environmental conditions that led to the response.
SHELTER IN PLACE-for use in external gas or chemical releases.
When occupants of a building are told to shelter in place, they make every effort to seal the
building from outside toxins by shutting down their air handling systems and blocking fumes
from entering the building. Parents should not come to a school while the occupants are under
this universal response as opening doors will expose the occupants to chemicals of concern.
